Atmosphere
« on: April 26, 2011, 01:59:44 am »
A lot has been said about the atmosphere getting quieter in recent years.  My question is, has it gotten particularly worse in the last 6-12 months?

The reason I ask is, it always seemed like YNWA was sung at the end of every match. But lately, I don't really remember hearing it at the end of many games (with the exception of Birmingham at home).  Even games like Man City at home, there were several times I could clearly hear them singing, "where's your famous atmosphere?".

Is it true that there are 'singing sections' of the Kop and people can get shushed if they sing in other areas? (I'm sure someone posted on here about someone getting yelled at for being too loud in the wrong section... not necessarily the Kop, but yeah...)

And can someone clarify for me... it kind of sounded to me that Ngog was booed by some when he came on against Birmingham.  Is this really still happening?  If so, I had really hoped that people would have learned their lesson with Lucas.

Apologies to everyone, I probably just seem like an out of town WUM, but I promise I have the purest of intentions.  I just want to know if my impressions lately have been accurate or not?  Also, if they are, is there anything in the works to get it back on track (e.g. RTK, etc)?

In a few months time I hope to be able to add to the atmosphere myself.  It will be my first time at Anfield and I'm glad to be able to get there before we move/ renovate.

There are "designated" singing sections on the Kop (306), but that doesnt mean anyone else cant sing.

Youve probably read from someone who was sitting in the centenary who got told to shhh as the majority of people there like to enjoy a nice quiet afternoon and smite anybody who tries to spoil it for them.

Ngog was boo'd by the Birmingham fans for diving against them last year.

Oh and also, Anfield has become a muchMUCH happier place than it was 4 months ago but still rather quiet it has to be said.

Just a quick answer would be the lack of big important games in recent years. We've not been in for any trophies for almost 2 years. I remember Dirk Kuyt's first goal against Villa when we won 5-0. With United losing at Craven Cottage, the importance of the game was amplified and the celebration for his goal was as LOUD. Unfortunately we haven't had/been given much to sing about recently.

So I should avoid the Centenary then if I can help it.  Thanks so much for all the info.  I'm sure you can appreciate, it would be hard to pick up these sorts of things from overseas, but not for lack of interest!

I suppose with KK back, the atmosphere issue should sort itself out then ;)

YNWA was sang at the end of the man city game, very slowly and brilliantly in fact, although not very loudly but sounded great.

I sing in 203 but I'm one of few who do, me, my mate and the fella behind us give it a good go but most people don't bother at all (around me anyway, not calling the whole block!). There's a good group on the edges of 203 going into 202 who make a good noise though, got to give them credit but with the people around them talking about corrie they're fighting a losing battle unfortunately.

What does my head in the most is the people who talk through YNWA before the game and we have to listen to the away fans singing over it, they should be proud of 'their' song and make sure it's sung loud and proud before every game.

If you want to be in a good atmosphere then sit on the kop the singing sections normally filter out into the rest , the centenary has a half decent atmosphere during a big game like united but apart from that it's dead

We really need a bigger capacity at Anfield / new stadium with lower ticket prices so more traditional fans can attend rather than people on trips or saving up to come for a special occasion and filming everyone else.

I definately think its down to people too worried to be the first to start singing. I have seen it a few times a person start bellowing a song only for everyone to turn round and stare....the person then stopping like a scratched CD!

Be honest, if you started singing and nobody joined in you'd feel a bit daft!

Ah ok, that'd be why I couldn't hear it over the tv.

I'll be around early next season, so I'll be trying for a seat in the Kop, but I don't know how easy or hard those tickets are to come by?

I've had that :P  To be fair, not really when I'm watching Reds games, because the games are on at such ridiculous hours, that if you went to the bar to watch it, you were going for atmosphere.  But some games I've watched for my local team, I'll start singing and be the only one. Actually, I was at a bar for our recent grand final (the Australian way is even leagues need to have 'finals'...).  We were two nil down with 5 minutes to go of extra time, and we scored two in the last 3 minutes to force penalties.  So I started with '2 nil down, 2 back up, Brisbane Roar will win the cup, with a nicknack paddywhack, give the dog a bone, central coast can f#$k off home'.  And people just looked at me, so I just kept going and got louder. I figured, screw em, it's the final.  By the end I had most of the people around clapping along and a few singing, was actually pretty good :P

I've seen hundreds of people moaning about the lack of atmosphere on here (myself included probably) but as many people have said in the RTK thread it should be people doing something about it at the game.

Then when the younger/newer fans sing songs that the 'educated' don't approve (who are ya') they get shot down and sneered at, I can't speak for anyone in particular so hopefully noone things I'm having a pop at them, but instead of staying quiet/tutting, surely the only way would be to drown them out? I'm an OOT and it took me a few games to pick up the longer songs.

I have been going to Anfield since 1992, but rarely make it to more than a few games per season with some being random midweeks against teams further down the table and the occasional Man Utd or Everton game if I am lucky.  With that in mind I feel pretty certain that Anfield is as defeaning as ever for the big games and as silent as ever for the small games. Nothing has changed in that time as far as I can see and I would remind some fans that this has long been the case - Shanks himself had to ask in the press one year that the fans start getting behind the team again.

As for certain parts of the ground not being tolerant of singing, I have never personally experienced that. I sing loud and proud wherever I am and have never been asked to be quiet, even when I was in the corporate hospitality seats in the Centenary.

True, I'm often the only one signing if i'm not lucky enough to be on the Kop. But that was the case in the mid 90s too.

Exactly. I would never chat any of the shite which other fans at other clubs do.

One of the great things about the Kop was its wit and originality. The kop was class against United, but we cant just do that for the big games. Against Brum I only heard about five or six songs, it's a bit repetitive really.

This is irritating - if people are going to do this why not watch it on the TV and record it? Surely no need for pictures then? At the Man City game when the minute silence was happening all I heard was the clicks of cameras and all throughout the game.

We've had 44 months of being distracted by things we shouldn't normally be concerned about followed by six months being subjected to some of the worst football our club have played for decades. There haven't been many games where the occasion breeds the atmosphere where you practically can't hear yourself for 90 minutes: no St Etienne, no mauling of Real Madrid and no pipping Chelsea to the post in a European Cup semi final but as fans we still put a shift in even when we get tonked in the league cup by the mighty Northampton. There real whoppers are the piss-heads who turn up to cause trouble and the ones in the far corner of the main stand who always seem to get caught up in singing Munich songs when we play Salford United. Actually add people who tell you to shush to that list.. never come across that before and if I did I would escort them out by the lughole and pay their taxi fare back to Thetford.
For those about to Klopp! We salute you

I find that with most teams that the away fans are always going to be up more for say liveliness than home fans, mainly because away fans know that their team are already at a disadvantage being the away team and there are more die hard fans who travel around the country to watch their team. Also at Home games there are the day trippers who are up for just being spectators.

That said, I don't want us to be like most teams. I want us to be loud and the 12th man each week, but can't see it happening with people, like I said, just wanting to watch the game. I have also found at the match there are so many moaners, they really wind me up, why bother going the match if every single player and move is going to annoy you.

I find that there is more of an atmosphere when we are comfortably winning games. Not the whole 'you only sing when your winning' rubbish, but more we have been so use to going up in games, but then losing in recent times, could it be no one wants to get their hopes up. I don't know, but unfortunatly there's always going to more of an atmosphere against the like of Man U and Chelsea than there will be for a Birmingham City or a West brom.

I'd sing louder and tell them to get to fuck if they didn't like it.

We sit whereever we can get tickets, Centenary, Main Stand recently, Paddock and Anny road for Newcastle and Spurs, and will always join in the singing.  To be fair, most around us have joined in, at least a bit, but I don't feel confident enough to start a song.

I often wonder though, how the songs start.  I mean, who decides it's time for the fields of Anfield Road or which ever song is sung.  I know the players songs are inspired by how well they are playing, but things like when the reds go marching in?

Can the singers in the Kop sing  the Lucas song more often please...........Ta
Rossiter absolutely bossed it tonight. Really believe he'll end up playing more games this season than Lucas.

I've never understood why so many people do this. It's utter bollox. The game is going on in front of them and they're sat there watching it from behind a mini camera screen. Whats the fucking point of that like? I mean, if you're going to fork out the money to go to the game, then at least watch the fucking thing and support the team instead of fannying about with a camera. Fucking saddo's the lot of them. Probably think they're uber cool because they have a picture of someone taking a fucking throw in. Tits !!!

Its strange - even with the way football is looked at now (like going to a show) you would still think were the kind of club people would want to sing about supporting - pride and all that.

The thing is i think a hell of  lot of people DO want to sing more and its not just our ground that is quiet, so I think we as a club should lead the way and ramp up the efforts that were made by the club with the singing section and the fans with reclaim the kop
If my assistant had not signalled a goal, I would have given a penalty and sent off goalkeeper Patr Cheh. he beeped me to signal the foul. Were glory hunters then....

I'm not saying we're gloryhunters, but we've had 2 seasons were everything that really can go wrong has gone wrong. I think once people see an improved start to the season then spirits will once again lift and that'll be that.

Where I sit in the Kop the atmosphere is grim. When YNWA is played at the start of a game you honestly get about 50% of the fans singing it.

From where i was sat last saturday in the annie road end the bottom left block of the kop (nearest the paddock) was full of scarves for ynwa. Probably 90% of em where them 'day trippers'. tell you wot I would rather have them in the ground every other week then the seasoned kopite who's had a season ticket for 25 years who really cant be arsed anymore and stays in the Sandon till five to three and eats pies and tells jokes with his mates all game.
The people of Liverpool are workers. This is not a rich town where everyone lives a comfortable life. They work hard for themselves, and this is what we at Liverpool like to do. This is the attitude we must all have.

No mate - IM saying we are - or rather the glory hunters for want of a better word and the supporters are to mixed up because of the way tickets are dished out etc

You don't have to make a racket to be a real fan but people who do want to make noise should be able to sit together in large numbers
If my assistant had not signalled a goal, I would have given a penalty and sent off goalkeeper Patr Cheh. he beeped me to signal the foul. The noise from the crowd  stopped me hearing it, I have been involved at places like Barcelona, Ibrox, Old Trafford, Arsenal, but I've never in my life been involved in such an atmosphere. IT WAS INCREDIBLE

You can't really complain about poor atmosphere if you're contributing to it by not singing!

I understand that people who go alone to matches may lack confidence in trying to start songs by themselves, so go with mates if you can and start songs off together. You have a much better chance of getting the people around you to sing if there's several of you singing already. Sheep effect!
