Author Topic: Liverpool rejected bids from Gremio & Villarreal for Lucas yesterday (Read 29198 times)

Gremio have confirmed to the Brazilian press they made numerous attempts to sign Lucas, both on loan and permanently, before the transfer deadline yesterday. They were also made aware that Villarreal had offers rejected also.

Lucas (probably his agent) informed both parties that he was under contract until 2012 here and was also wanting to extend that beyond this date, and was negotiating to do so.

They also mention that in the previous transfer window, offers were rejected from both Inter Milan and Santos. First time I've seen indication that Rafa tried to take Lucas with him to Inter.

This is the most important part of this article. I've been growing concerned about his contract running down, but it appears that he wants to stay and that we want him to stay. Fantastic!

Im yet to be convinced by him(if we want to challenge the top 4 consistently), but he has shown improvement.

I still think we shackle him and restrict his natural game as he is more suited to being a box to box midfielder

It said in the article that if he doesn't renew then he will be available for free in 12 months (which we knew and just looks like scaremongering). You are right though, the key part for me is that Liverpool said he wasn't for sale, he said he wanted to stay, and that negotiations are taking place. Unless Parry is recruited to oversee this deal, I'm sure he'll be signed up for many moons to come. Delighted.

Also, there was always a massive amount of love given to Torres... how he got us.... his love for the club etc. IMO.... if we are going to redirect that love somewhere else, this is the man. He's been massive for us in the last year or so. Never shirks a challenge and stuck with us despite being booed off the pitch at times. If ever a player deserved the unconditional love Torres had, I think it's Lucas. Not because of ability, but simply because he loves playing for us.

If we're going to be successful in all competitions in the coming years, after Kenny's rebuilt us with top class players, Lucas will be a very important squad player. Same goes for Kuyt.

He will not be among the greatest DM in the world but he will be one of the players who every top team will want. His overall contribution in a game is immense. He should be signed up ASAP.

Nothing like the Kuyt situation. Lucas improves month by month, becoming a crucial figure in this team. If we went and bought two world class midfielders tomorrow, I'm not sure Lucas would be getting dropped even then. Kuyt is six and a half years older, and... well, he's not improving, put it that way.

You just have to look at our last game to realise how vaulable he is to us. We looked lost without him when Fulham siezed control of the game.

Calm, composed, keeps the ball moving, always avialble for a pass and reads the game well. We need to hold on to him. Comolli is an admirer is he not?

In this transfer window, Dalglish looked at a CM to possibly add to competition within the squad. That CM can play in either of the 2 advanced positions, competing with Meireles and Gerrard, but not Lucas. Lucas is set to be one of the fixtures in Dalglish's side. That said, I'd still like a more mobile competitor for Lucas's spot than Poulsen, but I guess Dalglish doesn't think it's that urgent.

We need better than Lucas if we have any ambition to become contenders again. Granted, he has improved year-on-year, but it has been incremental at best. If he continues at his current rate of improvement, then he'll probably be Liverpool standard by the time he's 47, which I'm afraid isn't much good to us. I've no idea what the bids were, but if they were anything in the region of what we paid for him then we should have accepted them.

I expect his position will be addressed in the summer, though.

I like him. He's come through a lot and has fought hard to keep his place.

Of course he'll be away if somebody comes in for him with an offer to double his wage but that applies to them all.
