apologies if this has already been discussed in the thread......

I'm looking at a Gaggia Cubika but have read several reviews complaining about the switch stopping working after a few months.  Most of these reviews are a few years old, so was wondering if anyone knows if this is still an issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Agreed. Cubika has more plastic components, and so it WILL fail quite quickly. Baby is ok, but the Classic is virtually all metal and built like a tank.

Thinking about getting one that uses the pods, everything in this thread is double dutch to me - I just want something that produces better coffee than your bog standard instant jar.

Either of these ok?

Prefer the 2nd one but was hoping to buy on Argos with my argos card (wouldn't have to pay for 6 months) but they aint got it

Has to be red btw!

Love the look of this one but a bit too pricey for the occasional nice cuppa

I have a red Krups Pixie (http://www.amazon.co.uk/XN300640-Nespresso-Coffee-Machine-Electric/dp/B0067K0IF4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1352384629&sr=8-2) which I really like and use a lot, but the down sides are:

- you can only buy the capsules through the Nespresso website, or a couple of branches of Selfridges
- they ain't cheap. About 30p each
- most of the exotic blends they sell taste like piss. Roma and a couple of the Lungo ones are good.
- the refillable pods don't work at all

They are running a promotion at the moment where you get £40 of coffee free, so good for trying which ones you like. Argos don't sell Nespresso machines though, if that changes things...

Can't offer an opinion on the milk frother, as I don't have one.

The problem is buying the pods!

I can buy a pack of Lavazza Ground Espresso for about £3 and it will last me a week, I can also decide how strong I want it, number of shots etc

plus its fun making them

The problem is buying the pods!

I have 2 Nespresso machines and think they are great. Admittedly, you can have a better coffee using beans and a grinder, but I have 3 kids and it's me who gets them ready EVERY morning for nursery/school. I cannot be doing with thinking about messing about, even if it is a nice process, in the mornings and that's why pods are good for me. Also, buying pods over the web is NOT a problem. I buy most things over the web and it's just a case of knowing what you have left a few days before you order again. When I get down to the last box (of 10 pods), I order again! Simples!

1000's of things are ordered over the web. Nespresso pods are no different. They even throw in free postage if you order more than a few. Can't think how many, but it might be 15 boxes (roughly £3 a box).

Decided to get a nespresso which uses the pods, its just so much easier, have signed up to the Nespresso club, but is there anywhere cheaper to get the pods? And are there any pods that people reccomend? Do you have to get specific ones to make lattes etc? I know nothing lol

No - well, I've never found anywhere cheaper.

There isn't any milk in any of the capsules, so to make a latte, you would use the Nespresso machine to make an espresso shot, and then add milk.

If you haven't already bought the Nespresso machine, you might want to look at a Tassimo machine. You can buy capsules which included the milk, so you press the button and a latte comes out. Disclaimer! I have never tasted them!!!

And Argos have got a red one! http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4232960.htm

Tassimo or Nespresso?

Nespresso by the way, only make coffee. Krups and Magimix make the machines to use the pods.

I would only use pods made by nespresso (for a nespresso machine) and 30-35p a pod isn't expensive mate! If you're a coffee addict, it's a damn sight cheaper than going into a shop twice a day. You need a milk 'aerator' to make a latte for nespresso machines. I would never want to drink a tassimo latte as it uses powdered milk! Anyone old enough to remember "Five Pints" powdered milk?!!

It wasn't the coffee, it was the UHT milk out of a pod that was so rank.

If I'm buying from a supermarket, I take Percol black and beyond beans, but I discovered Adams and Russell roasters in Birkenhead which has an amazing range of coffees. 3 bags for a tenner. You should check their website.

Best thing about having a coffee machine this time of year is making hot chocolate with the steam arm. Chuck a few marshmallows in, heavenly.

Got me one of the new Nespresso U machines the other day, with an Aeroccino to froth the milk for me.  Only tried a couple of the decaff pods that come with it yet, but it's very nice.  You really do get fuck all in terms of volume from it though, so I'll experiment with the milk frother over the weekend.

the bf loves coffee but prefers to use the cafetiere rather than our pretty standard filter machinecoffee machine.
was thinking about buying a tassimo machine with pods but it seems people who are into proper coffee dont rate them.
other idea is an insulated cafetiere for him to use then he's working from home as he must end up drinking cool coffee.
any advice on either would be great cheers.

Bought one of these from Kickstarter.

Absolute bargain Jon. It comes equipped with a "cream perfetta" filter basked and nozzle. Ditch this immediately and get a traditional basket and perfect using it.  Otherwise your eyes will trick you into thinking you're amazing at making espresso, when actually you're making swamp water with a nice head on it.

This is what you need: http://www.espresso-products.co.uk/gaggia-double-filter-basket-321-p.asp
