What Was You Doing 20 Years Ago ?
« on: March 21, 2009, 10:14:38 pm »
I was planning my wedding in July.

A wedding I might never have seen.

But for the grace of the god..........

A son I may never had...........

A best friend I may not have meet..........

A friend I may not shared a drink with........

Whisper in a loved ones ear.........I love you.....and mean it.........please mean it.
I clutch the wire fence until my fingers bleed,
A wound that will not heal, a heart that cannot feel.
Hoping that the horror will recede,
Hoping that tomorrow we'll all be freed.........JUSTICE.

was a stupid 23 year old. all I was concerned about was getting pissed, and LFC of course.

the day of the semi, was getting myself all worked up, and was gonna listen to it on BBC radio. this was before the days when every FA cup later round game was shown live. Put the headhones on, to hear the announcer say ''and the ambulances are racing across the pitch...''

threw the headphones off and screamed at the family to knock off the film they were watching and put Grandstand on.

everything after that is a blur. an absolutely unbelievable day. it'll stay with me till the day I die. not involved in any way with any of the victims, but I suffered badly from PTSD afterwards, as I'm sure thousands upon thousands more of us did as well. Only now looking back do I realise that.

this anniversary is actually bringing back quite a few memories for some strange reason. previous years have been a lot easier than this year. why is that?

do you remember every News programme in the immediate aftermath would end with YNWA?

that would really crack me up. I'd end up in the back garden, crying like a little baby.

Erm, what kind of food makes sperm? I'm going to guess and say milk... and if milk comes from cows and cows eat grass...

I'm going to go ahead and say I was grass in a cow field 20 years ago...

Just read the thread, realised it's not just for a laugh.

I vividly remember it as I was watching Grandstand and they were saying somethinh major had happened and then the filming went to Sheffield. I was 15 turning 16 and knew people who had gone but thankfully were ok. The 80's was an amazing time for schoolkids being Red fans, we were spoilt really but you do have to feel that possibly this event was to affect us until recent times etc. But the 80's had other major football disasters with lives lost so there was a downside to the 80's. But the next few weeks I'm sure will allow us to reflect again and come together. Wear the stickers!

It's inevitable at this time of year many of us look back and wonder how things may have turned out if we'd done things differently.Being in the Leppings Lane end the previous year set me in good stead, I knew not to go down that fucking tunnel.
My lad is 10 now, the same age as the youngest victim. I can't fucking bear to think of him in the same situation.
Hard to believe it's 20 years. R.I.P

I was as excited about LFC's season as I am now ... I didn't know what was to come of course.

On April 15th I didn't have, and didn't deserve a ticket, so me and my other red mate went to Plough Lane to watch Wimbledon play Tottenham ... the rest of my life has been different ever since.

I was 10....

I remember watching the game on RTE and not understanding what was going on. The weeks afterwards were terrible. YNWA took on a new meaning after that for me and many others i am sure.
I'd played at Anfield and I knew the crowd were fantastic. I knew there was a public just waiting. So I fought the battles inside and outside. I was interested in only one thing, success for the club. And that meant success for the people. I wanted results for the club, for the love of the game, to make the people happy

I was on the way back from town (Lincoln), my birthday is 14th April, was my 11th that year, and I'd been spending my birthday money. On the way back we had the radio on listening to the match, I remember exactly where I was when the news was breaking, driving along Dixon Street past the car sales place. At first we heard there was trouble in the crowd, then it started turning much worse than that. As soon as we got home the tv was put on, horrible, horrible scenes. I didn't realise until a few days ago that it was only 11 months earlier I'd been to see us beat Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 at Hillsborough, one of the few times I've been able to go to a match.

YNWA.

I was about to go to a friend's 11th birthday party when Grandstand went over to the coverage. My mum was in a panic because we didn't know what stand my dad was in (turned out he was in one of the touchline stands). All a bit surreal, that evening we went round to my dad's mate's house who he's gone to the game with and I can remember they both gave me a big hug which they never usually did.

Like many of  you who were there, my dad is still affected by it but doesn't ever open up. He has a little desktop calendar that is still set on Sat 15 Apr as his little tribute.

I was six so I don't really remember the days tragic events but I do remember my nan and grandad panacking because 2 of my uncles had gone the game.

I also remember a school assembly taking place a few days after because of that sad day and also because Jon-Paul Gilhooley went to our school.

was only 8, remember the day so clearly though.
black and white tv was on in the kitchen with grandstand on it while me and my mate were helping my mum in the kitchen and garden.
i never know if this really happened or not, but was there like a reported death toll on the screen that kept going up as the day went on? :(
horrible.
a kid in my mums school died there, my uncle was at the match and so many other people we know were there.

20 years ago I was too young to be doing feck all to be truthful. At that point was still on me oldies farm as a 9 year old. In all honesty I was probably killing chickens, pigs, or sloughing out horse stables just trying to have a time like. If I wasn't doing that I was attending elementary school, fecking off in the woods or playing sports any chance I had like.Being the age I was then I was way too young to realise the consequences of what would shape my beliefs at the age I am now.

Remember being stunned by what happened. Was a victim of the media by believing what was written first until I knew better.

Now I realize that most of them would have been at the age in which I am now, having children and family.

Love your family, be the best for them!!
Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit to tackle big challenges; it should allow you to find values to road map through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are.
