Benitez: 'My Liverpool FC future not down to one tie'

Feb 25 2009 by Ian Doyle, Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ does not believe his future will be determined by the outcome of the Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.

The Spaniard returns to the Bernabeu this evening for Liverpool’s first knockout round first leg tie against the club where he spent 16 years as a player and coach.

With their Premier League challenge faltering in recent weeks, Europe has again emerged as the most likely route to silverware for the Anfield outfit.

And it means Benitez will give Steven Gerrard every chance to prove his fitness after missing the last three weeks with a hamstring tear.

The clash with Real has taken on extra significance given the current impasse over the Spaniard’s contract, which has now dragged on for almost four months.

An early elimination from the Champions League would undoubtedly weaken the manager’s hand during negotiations with American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But asked if tonight’s game was important to his contract, Benitez said: “I don’t think so. It’s an important game for the club. You know the situation and we have to wait.

“You have to judge a manager on his career, not one or two games. That’s my idea. If you have to decide a manager’s future on one or two games, I don’t think that’s the best decision.”

Doubts remain over Gerrard’s availability, with the player having taken part in only light training on Monday and further non-contact work in last night’s session at the Bernabeu.  And Benitez has admitted no decision has yet been made over whether the skipper will be named in the starting line-up. “We’ll decide after we talk with him after training,” said the Anfield manager. "It depends on the player. In the end we will talk with him and the doctor. Gerrard is more mature now and knows he has to give something to us. So if he is not ready, then he will say he is not ready. We aren’t trying to hide anything. We just want to make sure the player is okay and we don’t want to take any risks. But as always, the most important thing for us is the next game. And this is a massive game.”

Benitez spent seven years at Real in the youth and reserve ranks before injury ended his playing days. He then returned to the club in 1986 to work in various coaching capacities.

But the Liverpool manager dismissed suggestions his historic Bernabeu ties have given him any extra incentive for progress.

“There are people still working here from I was last here,” said Benitez, who also refused to be drawn on whether he would consider any offer to return to Real at the end of the season, when presidential elections will be held.  I can see a lot of friends. I have people here who I have good memories with. But my motivation is just to win a Champions League game against a top side in Europe. I’m a professional, so I want to help my side win.”

Oh dear ::)  If they want rid why are they are on their 4/5/6th draft of his contract, letting him get away with acting like a tit since this contract stuff started? Yes, Gillett hates him but Hicks calls the shots pretty much anyway and wants him to stay, granted because it helps him politically, nevertheless Hicks is not completely stupid. We were having a great season, now its ok.

Other managers are capable of getting us results, and taking us where we want to be surely? He isn't the messiah, some of his decisions leave a lot to be desired. That said, I think he is the right man for the job and has 'earned' a new contract.

Too many people reacting here.

We don't know Rafa's rejected the new contract offer, it sounds like the usual media's agenda against us, with nothing factual to back it up.
Rafa said he wanted to leave the contract negotiations until the summer, and hasn't said anything to change that.
Haven't we a game tonight?

Why would he leave now?

Think about it all.

At the moment i wouldn't trust any newspaper just look at the bollocks the daily mail is publishing like the one a week or so ago that was posted talking about us playing at the nou camp rather than the bernabeu. All the comments where negative too and not a single one positive one was posted when people from here started commenting too (at least when i last checked)

Heres another

Just heard on Talksport that betting has been suspended on Rafa leaving at several bookmakers. Hopefully bollocks, but they are often right.

there was someone on here telling people about something a player of ours may have said, I know you saw it Gedo and FS was incensed by it.

just listening to SSN about lots of bets on him to walk and low and behold he talks about how 'some player is thought to have told a paper that Rafa will go etc' People have to learn starting this shit makes our club look like a shambles just before a big game like this and the end of the season.

We have to remember alot of journalists and bookies etc scroll through these forums to try and get 'inside' knowledge. They will spin it like it is gospel.

the problem is those who read it and bet in this case

lots of people have put money on it, thats all, no truth in him wanting out, walking out or anything coming from him or the club that he will, just people reacting to stuff they here and like Raptor did, think that he will make some money out of it if it happens

thats exactly my point people need to think before they post. in the last 16 of the CL playing a huge away game tonight and in second place and some of our fans are on a witch hunt with shite rumours.

which is just hate filled made up nonsense don't care.

I have seen so many rumors start on here and hit the papers, some simple stuff, some more elaborate. It does not have to come from an informed poster, or even a reliable one, things can be taken for what they are.

Someone may come on to read this forum, see a comment like the one i quoted above, and if one person agrees they may thing shit.... i best put some money on this shit, and it spirals out of control.

I would very much doubt if anyone who has betted on it has any concrete info.

Fuck next season, William Hill are saying the week end!??!
Haven't we been here before though? Rafa was odds on to go over the Klinsmann debacle.

Having said that a william Hill spokesman said they recieved a flood of money from over 300 customers last night with his price falling from 20/1 to even money.
More money this morning caused the closing of the book.

Cant be bothered looking through tread to see if this is covered however there was a guy on Irish radio this morning who had talked to Rafa's advisors and 1) No he is not walking away 2) there is ONE  specific problem with the contract 3) they are talking over this problem and hope to resolve it soon.

Now not an earth shattering interview however i think it is what all off us suspect is happening. He would not elaborate on the One problem but he did indicate it was noting Rafa would walk out of negotiations over. Think the hysteria needs to stop ref the other threads and betting patterns.

Markets are suspended because of finance not because of credence.

I agree, William Hill protecting their losses ond others trying not to get stung!
