Or maybe we will play with three central midfielders, two wingers and one striker. Just like Rafa used to play with Valencia.

Spot on, that's what I suggested in the other thread. The two wingers could also be replaced with wide forwards, such as Kuyt or Bellamy.

We know how Rafa likes to chop and change..this lad bought in on a loan could give valuable rest to Xabi or even Stevie on the weekends after the Champions League for example.

I think Rafa sees him as like for like cover for Alonso.
He is a deep lying midfielder that links play together. I hope we get him. He's young and really impressed me in the World Cup.

                          Kuyt/Crouch
  Garcia/Gonz/Kewell      Pennant/Garcia
          Alonso - Mascherano/ - Gerrard
                              Momo

Think we should play with two strikers to be honest. It wouldn't benefit Bellamy either.

I'm sure it will be business as usual in midfield with Mascherano being back-up to Stevie and Xabi and coming in when Rafa decides the main two need a rest.

Don't forget that we are still in 4 competitions.

I see it that we could then set up as Rafa often did at the Mestella.

                               Crouch/Kuyt
Gonzalez/Kewell/Garcia           Bellamy/Pennant/Kuyt

                     Gerrard/Garcia

   Two from Xabi/Momo/Mascherano

With the forward three very much interchangeable.

Its usually Alonso that plays in the deep lying central position you have for Momo/Mascherano anyway

If we wanted to play for a draw away from home against a top team then a midfield of:

Garcia-------------------------------------Gerrard
-----------------------Momo------------------------
-------Mascherano------------Alonso--------------

looks pretty formidable.

Am I right in thinking Mascherano could play in the Champions League? Would it be a choice between Neill and Mascherano as to who we can register? Because away from home in Europe that looks a damn good midfield.

He might not even sign though so I'll leave any further tactic speculation till later....

I'd take Mascherano, always good to have 4 quality CM's who can do different jobs. but it's very unlikely we'll get him, unless he wins his appeal against the FIFA ruling

Wouldn't be a bad signing especially as he would be good cover for Momo while he's injured but I'm a bit hesitant about that Kia Joor-whateverhisnameis owning him.

"Mascherano has made it clear he wants to move to Liverpool, and a deal has been agreed with his representatives Media Sports Investments"

When Chris Bascombe comes out with stuff like this you have to put it in a bracket above the other prattle and nonsense of the transfer season.

Would be made up to see him - quality player, hope we pull it off

He cant even make a shitty West Ham 1st 11, why the feck do we want him, nevermind the fact his contract situation means he will cost 20m plus anyway no matter how good or shyte he is. Heres a guy who will find himself on various loans throughout his contract as no one wants to pay a rediculous fee.

Is he good enough to displace Alonso, Gerrard or Momo from the 1st team? Even if he starts every 2nd game this guy wants 1st team football so once he finds himself on the bench he & his management crew will kick up a fuss.

Nobody thought Zenden would get any games this season, but things change and we all know Rafa likes to rotate and use different systems.  At the end of the day Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko & Zenden have all had at least a run in the side this season, and we'll be without Sissoko until Febuary and Zenden probably even longer, so at the moment we've only got two fit propper central midfielders.  I think at Ł5m, or even a loan, this makes Mascherano an absolute must.  Yes it gives Rafa a problem when everyone returns to fitness, but I trust him to make the right decision on who to play (or even sell) when that situation arises.  A loan is a win-win situation because if it doesn't work out, we just opt not to buy him, but how anyone can say he's not needed when he shouldn't initially cost us a penny, with the fixture pile up we've got at the moment is beyond me.  Central midfield is now the priority and I'd rather us grab a player like Mascherano than have to recall Salif Diao from on loan!!

It would be very interesting if we set up with him and Xabi in the middle and Gerrard slightly ahead in a makeshift 4-3-3 with our wingers and or Kuyt/Bellamy with another of our forwards in the middle.

Valencia like.

Definitely my preffered formation Neil and no doubt that that IS Gerrards best position. I'd have Kuyt as my front man and the options either side are pretty good : Pennant, Gonzo, Garcia, Bellamy, Kewell when he's ready!

I think Momo might have something to say though. For me Mascherano is more of an alternative to Xabi in that he's very economical in his movement and I still think that Rafa likes the power and graft that Momo brings to the midfield. Mascherano and Xabi would likely occupy the same sort of areas, though Xabi has been playing slightly more advanced lately so maybe thats been taken into consideration. Either way signing this guy is only good news if he's prepared to learn the game here and bide his time.

As a loan with option to buy, I think it would be a stunning bit of business.

Keeping all four happy may be difficult, but Momo will take a fair while to get fit.

Well the squad may now have him, Momo, Alonso, Zenden & Gerrard as CM cover...4 defensive types & Gerrard. This lad has never scored a league goal in his life so adds feck all goal threat.

Hell if you see Rafa fielding

...........Mascherano
.....Alonso .........Momo
Pennant Gerrard Speedy
...............Kuyt

You will have the least goal threatening top 10 side in the league. Unless you can tell me otherwise?

Plus where is this 5m fee shyte coming from...in 2005 he cost Corinthians 8m quid. They obviously want a lot more for him now.......35m buy out clause is worth nought but still fear he will cost 15m plus at least.

I would suggest he would be direct opposition to Alonso with Sissoko and Gerrard fighting it out for the further forward of the 2 central midfielders.

On the odd occasion we play 5 in the middle, we would probably go back to the Valencia method of Alonso, Gerrard and one of Sissoko/Mascarano, plus two wingers, one of which would probably be Garcia.

I see no probelms with those two systems, and Mascarano would give us that Hamann-esque player we do need. I have been saying it for ages that Hamann was a big loss, Alonso just doesn't do quite the same job.
