Boca versus Liverpool ? Super Intercontinental Cup

Boca eager to face Liverpool
By Patricio Figueroa -  Created on 14 Jun 2006

Boca Juniors are still hoping to play Liverpool in the Super Intercontinental Cup, but are aware that there are difficulties standing in the way.

The game is supposed to pit the winners of the Uefa Super Cup against the South American champions.

However, Liverpool, who defeated CSKA Moscow in the battle of the Uefa and UEFA Champions League victors, are having problems scheduling the fixture around their other commitments.

"We have received a letter from Uefa that says this game has to be played," said Boca vice president Pedro Pompilio.

"They suggested that we play it with as many regular first team players as possible.

"It's been difficult because Liverpool doesn't have many spare dates.

"We have spoken about playing two matches - in Buenos Aires and at Anfield - and also about the chance of playing one match at the Bernabeu.

"The officials of Liverpool have said that if we want to play the match we should go to England."

Boca president Mauricio Macri even hinted that the game could be played against CSKA Moscow if Liverpool could not manage to fit it in.

"We are having so many date problems with Liverpool so it could happen that we end up playing the match against CSKA," said Macri.

Mind, I've been told if you go to a match there you don't necessarily want to make it obvious that you're English ... and before anyone mentions it, you might not get time to explain the difference between being English and Scouse ;)

Perhaps I've been misinformed fella. Just passing on what I was told. I know they're friendly in general, was just told that it could be different at a footie match if you're English. Was told there's sometimes rioting after the game as well, but maybe the Argentinian lad who told me was exagerrating. I want to go to the Superclásico within the next year or two so I'll find out soon enough.

fair do's - he is right there was always rioting - but when i went it was the first time the away fans were allowed at the ground after a ban and all was peaceful

It didn't exist. This is the first time they want to hold it, to replace the old Toyota Cup (Intercontinental Cup) which used to talke place between the winners of the European Cup and the Copa Libertadores.

This first made the news around September last year.
Well we won't be European super cup holders in a couple of months so we'd have to sort it out soon.
Or this game could be played at the start of the following season?

It would be nice to play this, but can anyone see it happening what with the CL qualifiers too?

I remember this story was doing the rounds a year or so ago. What Boca are seeking to do is resurrect the Intercontinental Cup (that Utd won in '99 but we failed to do in '81 and '84) except not between the European Cup winners and it's South American equivelent but the Super Cup winners and it's counterpart the 'Recopa' - South American Super Cup.

I think we should give it a go to be honest, i'm desperate for us to officially win a 'world' trophy backed by FIFA and UEFA, and like Utd did in '99 have two shots at winning a world competition. If we did win at least we can say we won the Intercontinental like the mancs did and add the one (no matter how minor) item missing in our trophy cabinet.

Yep. That's the one for me. It's a world title. FIFA back the game and think it should be played. Is it THAT hard for us to play a pre season world title game at the bernabeau? Come on LFC - FIFA want it, Boca want it, the fans want it, and the club shoud grasp this chance to win a "world" title for the first time ever, because who knows when we could next be in a position to play one. Japan left a sour taste, because I so wanted - this is our chance.

Get it on!

We don't need this game and I don't want it because if one of our players gets injured which is a great possibility cause they will be up for it and the tackles will fly, on the other hand who wouldn't want to see it as a spectacle.

I'd love to see this game. Be a nice money-earner as well (for a 'pre-season' anyway). I bet it would have been a lot easier to say 'yes' if we didn't have a 2-legged Champions League qualifier though.

I would say yes to one at the end of July / beginning of August with the World Cup players getting sufficient rest. However personally I'd say no to anything later than that as the last thing we want is the players jetting off round Europe / The world for what is essentially a friendly (albeit a prestigious one) just before the start of the season. Also, the Charity Sheild means our season starts a week earlier than everyone elses which would affect any timescale for a possible game. Doubt it'll happen to be honest, although the club might be persuaded by the money involved.

Intrigued by the comment

"We have received a letter from Uefa that says this game has to be played," said Boca vice president Pedro Pompilio.

I remember this being mooted last November but wasn't aware this had got as far as UEFA sanctioning it and, as has been pointed out elsewhere, this won't be our responsibility in a couple of months time.

In fact, the CL Regulations covering 2004-5 do oblige us to enter "intercontinental competitions arranged by UEFA with other
confederations." (Para 1.08) but as European Champions, not Super Cup Winners and furthermore "Clubs are not authorised to represent UEFA or the UEFA Champions League without UEFA's prior written approval." (Para 1.09)

Anything to prolong the glory and all that but it is stretching things a bit to have a trophy based on winning a trophy which in turn is based upon winning another trophy...
