Next season could be his breakout season in the first team just like 2012/13 was for Sterling. I remember him giving City a torrid time in that 2-2 at Anfield and he never looked back from there and I could absolutely see Elliot doing the same. He certainly seems to have enough talent to do so.

Harvey Elliot making his League Cup debut and almost scoring at 16 years old.

This should be a salutary lesson to Bobby Duncan at 18 years old and only at the start of his second season at Liverpool who would have been playing in that match had he exercised reasonable patience. Instead thanks to him forcing a move, he is currently playing in Fiorentina's U-19 team (despite the fact that he was promoted to Liverpool's U-23 team this season)...

That deal has to be about the money! Why else would you leave Liverpool, a club that gives youth a chance to a mid table Italian team?

On the plus side; Elliot looked a real player. Some nice touches and was unlucky not to score.

He was truely awesome. Looked so comfortable with the ball. He also glides past players quite easily. He reminds me of a prime ozil and i think he will eventually be so much better than him.

That composure, we don't have that kind of player in our midfield, maybe apart from Naby. Wish he was a couple years older, because at 16 I don't see Klopp giving him much play time in the main games.

Reckon he'd get about 10-15 assists per game if he played with Salah and Mane, was great last night, hopefully he starts v Arsenal.

Yeah 15-0 is common these days.

Fantastic talent and very exciting future ahead.

I know we don't play with a number 10 but he would be incredible at that role.

Great debut, some of those jinks and and through balls were fantastic. Really hopes he gets some game time in the league later this season, maybe when we're two or three goals up and one of our front three could do with a rest/

He'd have to get on the bench 1st.

He was really excellent last night but if everyone is fit he's not getting on the bench ahead of Origi or Shaqiri at the moment. You could argue that Brewster is ahead of him in the pecking order currently.

Elloit is an outstanding youngster but there's no need to push him too hard. His aim this season will be to progress in the under 23 and be a standout player at the level. Added to this he should be looking to get into the match day squads for the League and FA Cup games. Another aim may be to be ahead of Brewster in the pecking order by the time the season ends.

The above are pretty high aims for a 16 year old. The same aims will in general apply to Brewster. Unless we have an injury crisis then I would say there's likely to be little need to throw a 16 year old into a league game this season. No matter how talented they are.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Would rather that he ends up our oldest goalscorer to be honest. Youngest goalscorers mean very little.

But yes, he looks tremendous.

If we could combine his game intelligence and technique with the power of a Jordon Ibe he would be unstoppable already.

As it is, he probably needs a little more strength and speed.

I had to look this up.

Oldest goalscorer: Billy Liddell, 38 years, 55 days (against Stoke City, 5 March 1960).
Roger Scruton was right about everything.

He is very talented. A bit of Wilshire, a bit Lallana.

Excellent touch & football brain. His obvious limitation is pace, which might see him as a midfielder rather than a forward in our current set-up. He should have scored both chances, but at least he got himself into those positions.

Hopefully he’ll e around for years to come.

Let's not go over the top and compare him to Jack Wilshere, eh

:)

He looks really good, hopefully he is learning on the training pitch with Mo, Bobby and Mane; seeing him on the field with one or two of them should be very exciting.

At 16 there’s plenty of room for athleticism to develop any way isn’t there?

I'm habituated to hearing this now about any footballer who is slower than Traore.

On the evidence of last night not only is Elliot quick, he's quick off the mark and quick running with the ball. He did something in the second half, too, when he was on the left flank, which suggests he knows instinctively what line to run in to protect the ball from an encroaching defender. With a mere couple of degrees change of direction he put an extra 5 yards between himself and his pursuer.

Yep. Probably not to Salah standards, but he can definitely improve his power and increase his running efficiency through training, and his stride length if he's still growing, I think.

I don't really understand how its possible for a lad born 2003 to do a performance like that against professionals and playing together with international stars and dont look lost.. the lads I used train was born 2001/2002; put in a lot of effort and were good lads - but they find the transition to senior pub leagues pretty tough - all in relative comparison though..

Do you know how its possible to prepare for that ? play against older players; just excel in your age group - or 1 in a million talent ?

Most of the players I know who couldn't make the step up couldn't do it for two reasons - athleticism, and mentality. And they often go hand-in-hand. Mostly, they didn't have the speed to cope with the level up (even in pub leagues), or they didn't have the mentality to keep pushing through the initial failures, or to look after their body, or to do the demanding training. After those two, touch and game intelligence are the next two issues that hold players back. But having the first two qualities in abundance makes moving up much easier.

In fairness, from what I can remember, Wilshere looked shit hot at 16/17, before injuries (and possibly a lack of professionalism?) turned him into whatever he is now. To be honest, Elliot reminds me a bit of him at that age in many ways. The kid looks ace, stupidly good for one so young.

Given Wilshere's smoking habit, it's probably more likely he never had the mentality to REALLY make something of his talents.
