Missions/Levels/Areas that you hate in a game
« on: May 15, 2021, 10:13:00 pm »
I’ve just got done activating the generator in the basement in The Last of Us and remembered how much I hated doing it.

I hate basement, tunnel and sewer levels in a game for some reason I always have.

I hate underwater areas in any game too, I always try and get them done as quick as possible.

What missions/levels/areas do YOU hate in a game?  :no

Cool idea for a thread.

I'm sure I have loads but the first one that comes to mind is the Guarma mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Did not care for it one bit. Seemed very far fetched and just took me out of the story.

Over all that game is up there with one of the best ever made, but that's bit was naff.

Yeah, this is a great idea for a thread. I’ll come back with a more detailed post but for now I’ll suggest the level(s) where you use a jet pack in the remastered Crash Bandicoot trilogy. I’ve been playing through the games and they’re generally a lot of fun, but the gameplay on this level is so bad that I might just quit entirely. Even the idea of playing through this level, and maybe more if this mechanic comes up again, is tortuous.

Completely agree. The pacing of that game is very strange. It’s a masterpiece in some ways but hugely frustrating in others. I’ll come back to that too.

I love the GTA games but the Supply Lines mission in GTA San Andreas is horrible. The controls to fly the RC plane ruined it.

Any mission that requires you to look after someone. Or ones where you have to follow and they walk faster than you walk, but slower than you run. Countless examples of these. One where you have to keep in the bubble with triss in the witcher 2, resident evil 4 and looking after the girl, think Ashley was her name, and usually the one that everyone remembers, goldeneye...

I have a really similar aversion to sewer/basement levels. I much prefer my character being outside ;D

Same with underwater, playing Sonic as a kid and watching him repeatedly drown was soul destroying.

The prologue to RDR2 stands out recently. Wonderful game but fuck did that drag on.

The Library in Halo.

I agree with the basement in TLOU, it's more the apprehension than anything.

I love the Soulsborne series but there is nothing more annoying than getting beat by a big boss, spawning at the start again and struggling to get past a minion that you have killed plenty of times before, before you even reach the boss again.

Timed missions.

Dark levels where you cannot see the enemy.

Missions where you have to chase someone. Remember the mission in GTA Vice City where you are recruiting a driver for a heist? Nightmare.

Modern day in the Assasins Creed series.

Oooh and a mission I absolutely hated and nearly gave up on was flying the small plane into the back of the larger one in GTA V. The rage I experienced.....

Some great GTA shouts in here, I agree with all of them,  and I'll also add Freefall in San Andreas which I remember really struggling with.

A few others that come to mind from games that I otherwise loved are the Battletoads Clinger Winger level, Labyrinth Zone on Sonic (this one is probably not that hard but the muisc that played when Sonic was running out of air used to terrify me when I was a kid),  the Half-Life Xen levels and  "The Escape" level from Aladdin on the megadrive.

Fetch and carry in RPGs which send you across the entire map for no good narrative reason is my biggest gripe, especially since world map size has become a flex for developers. Currently also hating on escort missions across a couple of genres. RPGs? Watch the NPC get stuck on scenery and faceplant themselves into mobs at every opportunity. RTS? Watch them plough straight on through the worst of terrain.

The run through the sewers in the final mission of Dying Light, just prior to climbing the skyscraper.  Get an angle slightly wrong or mistime a jump and yer dead.  It's an absolute pain in the arse on a controller.

This all day long

Ornstein & Smough in Dark Souls springs to mind (This from me yet again, sorry)

There are huge Sentinels you have to kill before even getting the chance to take on the uber-difficult O&S,  especially if you want to summon "Solaire" to help you

Here is a post from someone on Reddit who felt my exact pain :)

Here's the thing, I know I can beat Ornstein and Smough, I have almost done it twice.

My problem is getting to them. its these FREAKING Bullshit Gold giants. They Sap my estus and my health, they take AGES to kill because of their freaking healing, they come after me AT the same time and gangbang me

By the time I have defeated them both and am ready to fight Ornstien and smough, I am at least 1 estus down and probably need to use another, And I need all my Estus's to fight those two.

And I can't just leave them cause I need Solaire, and he gets stuck and does not come through the fog door with me if those two Gold giants are not dead

Tips please? these two assholes are driving me up the wall.

Had to look up the mission name but Cop Land from Vice City was the one I could never get past. Automatic 5 star wanted level that I couldn't find a way to shake. Annoying too, because I loved everything about the game but it's the only one where I didn't complete the story. I did install it again a couple of years ago to try again but I couldn't stand it after playing GTA5.

In general, I don't like enforced stealth sections in games - it used to be all the rage in games like Jedi Knight to have one bit that would auto fail if you were spotted.

Yeah Guarma on RDR2 was shit. Literally added nothing to the story and was just jarring.

I keep meaning to play that again one day to see if my muscle memory would still kick in.  That is solid I agree but at least it's fairly early on in the game!  You finally learn all that and then your "reward" is that you have to learn the snakes sequence,  it's sadistic

I remember you HAD to pass it as well. In a multi-storey car park. I still have flashbacks to this day...

Sneaking an hour in here and there with an illicit cop bought for me by an older mate, took me weeks if not months to eventually fudge it using the (hideous) keyboard controls.

My addition is any stealth level in any game where being spotted is an instant fail.

Another GTA V one... the one where you go the container port and have to drive the lorry around and climb the crane etc.

Basically any level where you have to drive a vehicle like a lorry is shit.

Anything underwater, be it in Mario or Quake or.. Ecco  ;D

Hate anything cheap as well. One of the Call of Duties had enemies in waves that respawn over and over to force you to move on. I get it's not an open world game, but it is cheap, vs like, making the narrative genuinely compelling.

Level design is an art. Valve have a good philosophy, or used to: the player should always be in control (that's why Half life cut scenes were not cinematics), and the best levels allow you to explore or fight or whatever, while also making you WANT to do it.

Grandmaster level on Super Mario Galaxy 2. Still not over it

My kid loves Mario. So do I to be fair. Just finished world 8 again on Super Mario Bros. Wii this morning. Gonna tackle world 9 tonight when I get home.

Mario Kart is probably my favourite game of all time. Getting MK7 for Christmas for 3ds. Really looking forward to it.

When we got Super Mario Galaxy 2 I had collected every single star.240 of the fuckers. Took a couple of months and I was fucking ecstatic. Then the final star, Grandmaster I think, fucking destroyed me for a few days. One Friday I had the house to myself. Got the beer and smokes and munchies in all prepared to tackle the c*nt again. Turned the Wii on to discover my kid had wiped the fucking file. I was fucking livid.

Difficult "gauntlet" type levels.

I'm thinking the bit Crystal Peak in Hollow Knight for example, or the Path of Pain.

For some reason I find dying repeatedly to traps and falls far more frustrating than dying to a boss, potentially because I enjoy the boss fights more. Dying to a gauntlet over and over just feels like unnecessary cruelty. I've never smashed a controller before but I've come close quite a few times playing Hollow Knight.

Yep. It feels kind of out of place too from rest of the game. However, it did give the game weird dark supernatural vibe that I liked.

I was horrified by it. I can’t stand torture in movies or games, it’s too brutal. I got the underlying message of the mission, but it would be nice if you could skip that sequence.
