May 4th

May The 4th Be With You

1974 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Wembley to win our second FA Cup, thanks to a brace from Kevin Keegan and a Steve Heighway goal. Future reds Alan Kennedy and Terry McDermott both played for Newcastle.

1976 - We clinched our ninth League title, Bob Paisley’s first as Manager, as we won 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We only needed a point, while Wolves had to win to stay up. Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Ray Kennedy all scored in the last quarter of an hour after Steve Kindon had put Wolves ahead.

1978 – We were held to a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest at Anfield, ending the season seven points behind the visiting champions in second place, despite securing the same number of points as in the previous campaign when we won the League.

1985 - We faced Chelsea in the First Division, this time winning at Anfield by the odd goal in seven. Steve Nicol nabbed a brace while Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush also struck. Future red Nigel Spackman scored from the spot for the visitors, with Kerry Dixon and Gordon Davies also on target.

1987 - Ian Rush captained the reds in his last home game before he moved to Juventus. He struck the only goal of the game against Watford.

1988 – The PFA announced that the reds were the winners of the inaugural Fair Play trophy.

1991 - We came from two goals down to level but eventually lost 4-2 at Chelsea. Young winger Jimmy Carter came off the bench and was later himself substituted by Ronnie Rosenthal. David Speedie and Rosenthal got on the scoresheet, while Gary Gillespie played his 214th and last reds game. Kerry Dixon netted two of his seven strikes past us, with Dennis Wise converting a penalty, one of his four goals against the reds, and Gordon Durie also on target with the last of his five. Ex-red Bobby Campbell resigned as Blues boss three days later.

1992 – Ahead of the FA Cup Final, Candy was announced as the club’s first ever permanent match sponsor, for the 1992/93 season.

1997 - A Super League match between St. Helens and Castleford Tigers was staged at Anfield, with Saints winning 42-16 in front of 12,329.

2008 - Fernando Torres scored in his eighth consecutive home League game, equalling Roger Hunt’s club record as we beat Manchester City 1-0. This was his 32nd goal of the season.

2009 – Centre-back Sami Hyypiä agreed to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen when his contract expired at the end of the season. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He later took over as Team Manager at the BayArena for two years

2019 – We won 3-2 at Rafael Benítez’s Newcastle United with Divock Origi’s late header ensuring the title race with Manchester City went down to the last day of the campaign. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring, with Christian Atsu equalising before Mohamed Salah put us back in front before half an hour had elapsed. Salomón Rondón drew the home side level again after the break, with Salah having to be taken off with an injury that ensured he missed the upcoming critical UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg meeting with Barcelona.

Happy Revenge Of The 5th Day

1951 – Tottenham Hotspur were presented with the championship trophy by Football League President Arthur Drewry, having secured the title in the previous game after being promoted as Second Division champions only the previous season. We lost 3-1 at White Hart Lane that day, with Albert Stubbins on target late on. Sonny Walters struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Peter Murphy and Len Duquemin also scoring.

1966 - We played our first European final against Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund at Hampden Park in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, with Roger Hunt bagging our equaliser after Siegfried Held’s goal, but with eleven minutes of extra time remaining, Reinhard ‘Stan’ Libuda’s shot hit the crossbar, and rebounded off Ron Yeats to hand the cup to Dortmund, who became the first German side to claim a European trophy.

1977 - Alan Hansen signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000. He went on to make 620 reds appearances, netting fourteen times as he helped us to three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields.

1979 – Phil Neal struck twice as we beat Southampton 2-0 at Anfield.

1981 – Centre-half Colin Irwin bagged his third and last goal while playing his 44th and final game for the club, with defender Richard Money appearing for the seventeenth and final time. Ray Kennedy also scored as we won 2-1 at Middlesbrough. David Shearer netted one of his four goals past us as Terry McDermott played his 200th League game for the reds.

1984 - Muhammad Ali was in the crowd to watch us play out a goalless draw at Birmingham City.

1990 - John Barnes scored a hat-trick as we came from behind in our 6-1 win at Coventry City, taking him to 22 League goals that season, with Kevin Gallacher bagging the home side’s opener. Ronnie Rosenthal netted a brace, with Ian Rush also on target in our final game of the season, in which we had clinched the title for the eighteenth and most recent time.

1993 - We lost a Premiership fixture 3-2 at Oldham Athletic, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet twice at Boundary Park. David James scored an own goal while Don Hutchinson was sent off, our sixth dismissal that season. Darren Beckford and Ian Olney also struck for the home side. This game had originally been postponed back on Boxing Day.

1996 - Ian Rush scored his 346th and final reds goal in a 2-2 draw at Manchester City, with our other strike being a Steve Lomas own goal, the hundredth time we had benefited to date in this way in the League, as City were relegated. We were actually two goals up before Uwe Rosler and Kit Symons struck for the home side.

1999 - We played Manchester United, with Jamie Redknapp and ex-United star Paul Ince netting as we came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Anfield, with Denis Irwin sent off for the Mancs, after converting a penalty. Dwight Yorke had opened the scoring with one of his eight goals against the reds. The Walton Breck Road reverberated to cries of “you lost the League on Merseyside” after the match, which sadly did not prove true.

2001 - Michael Owen scored a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield in Gérard Houllier’s hundredth League game in sole charge.

2007 - Papa Bouba Diop was sent off for Fulham as Craig Bellamy played the last game of his first spell at Anfield, with Mark González and Gabriel Paletta also making their final appearances for the reds in our 1-0 defeat that came just four days after we had seen off Chelsea to reach Athens. Harry Kewell played his first game since the previous season’s FA Cup Final, while young left-back Emiliano Insúa played just his second game. Clint Dempsey struck the only goal of the game.

2012 – We lost the FA Cup Final 2-1 to Chelsea, falling behind to an early goal from Ramires. Didier Drogba struck his eleventh and final goal against us after the break. Substitute Andy Carroll pulled a goal back, his eleventh and last one for the reds, before his late header was deemed not to have crossed the line when pushed onto the bar by keeper Petr Čech.
Also On This Day

2013 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton at Anfield, with Sylvain Distin having a header ruled out for a Victor Anichebe foul on Pepe Reina

2014 - Joe Allen scored a club record 59th first-half goal in a season at Crystal Palace, with Damien Delaney putting through his own net after the break. Two minutes later, Luis Suárez scored his 82nd and final reds goal, a club record fourteenth away goal of the season and joint all-Premier League record 31st goal in a campaign as we took a three-goal lead, reaching a new club record of 48 away League goals. This was an all-Premier League record 21st time in a season that we had scored three or more goals in a game. However, Delaney pulled one back with just eleven minutes remaining before Dwight Gayle nabbed a brace as the game ended 3-3 to deliver our League title hopes a near-decisive blow, two of his four goals past us to date, although we went back to the top of the table with less than a week of the season to go. Victor Moses came off the bench for his 22nd and last reds game on loan from Chelsea.

2016 – We beat Villarreal 3-0 at Anfield to reach the UEFA Europa League Final in Basel, 3-1 on aggregate. Bruno Soriano diverted a Daniel Sturridge strike into his own net early on, with Sturridge putting us ahead after an hour before Víctor Ruiz was sent off for the visitors. Adam Lallana completed the scoring.

May 6th

1980 – Middlesbrough beat the reds 1-0 at Ayresome Park in our season closer. David Shearer struck the first of his four goals against us at the death.

1985 – We won 2-0 at Coventry City, with Paul Walsh scoring twice past former reds reserve keeper Steve Ogrizovic.

1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course.

1991 - Our 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest handed the League title to Arsenal, their second in three seasons. Nigel Clough scored the opener with Jan Mølby netting our equaliser from the spot, while David Burrows was playing his hundredth game for the reds. Ian Woan bagged the winner. This game was postponed from the previous December.

1995 – Keeper David James reached a century of reds games in our 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Dwight Yorke netting two of his eight strikes against us.

1997 - Michael Owen netted on his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 144 days. He had come on as a substitute for Patrik Berger less than twenty minutes previously in our 2-1 defeat by Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, nabbing our consolation after a Jason Euell goal and one of Dean Holdsworth’s four strikes past the reds.

1998 - We hosted the Gunners at Anfield after they had already clinched the League title, their first since that 1991 triumph. We thumped them 4-0, with Paul Ince bagging a brace, and Michael Owen and Øyvind Leonhardsen also on the scoresheet. Owen also had a penalty saved by Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger after Matthew Upson had fouled Steve McManaman.

2018 – We lost at Chelsea as Olivier Giroud headed in the only goal, one of his seven past us to date, as we stuttered towards a top-four finish in the League.

2023 – Mohamed Salah reached a century of Anfield goals, the only strike of Brentford’s League visit, as he netted for a club record ninth consecutive home game. Meanwhile, Alisson Becker kept his hundredth clean sheet for the club.

Cheers BB - been a bit slack in this thread!

Quick one for now, that 1999 United game was probably the closest I’ve come to experiencing what it’s like to be an Evertonian. We were shite and outclassed and then got thrown a lifeline, Irwin got sent off. The crowd got up, we got a penalty and then Ince popped up with that late equaliser having been given shite all night from the United fans. At that point it put Arsenal back on top with two games to go and it really did look like we’d scuppered their title challenge. They had a lot of luck in all competitions that year, as well as their obvious ability!

1977 – We drew 1-1 with Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Don Givens opened the scoring early on, with Jimmy Case bagging the equaliser.

1981 - We lost 7-6 in a testimonial match for Swans defender Wyndham Evans at Swansea City.

1983 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Aston Villa, with Craig Johnston on the scoresheet after Nigel Spink had saved a penalty from Phil Neal. The referee ordered it to be re-taken, but he then saved his second kick as well! Gary Shaw was on target from the spot for the visitors.

1984 - Ian Rush bagged four goals, including a penalty, in our 5-0 demolition of Coventry City at Anfield. Alan Hansen netted the other goal.

1988 - We thumped Sheffield Wednesday 5-1, making this the twelfth game of the season that we had netted at least four goals. Craig Johnston and Peter Beardsley both struck twice with John Barnes also on target, with Beardsley and Ronnie Whelan both hitting the post. The Aussie’s last-minute strike was his fortieth and final reds goal. Jan Mølby moved to centre-half at half time as Alan Hansen was taken off as a precaution after straining a thigh. David Hirst netted the first of his four strikes against the reds, with four of the six goals in the game coming in the final three minutes. This remains our joint record victory over the Owls, although it was matched the following April.

1989 - We played our rearranged FA Cup Semi-final with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. The 3-1 victory was our first FA Cup Semi-final win without the need for a replay, setting up an emotional all-Merseyside final in the immediate aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster. John Aldridge netted a brace, either side of the last of Neil Webb’s five goals past us, with our other score coming from a Brian Laws own goal.

1994 - Robbie Fowler netted as we lost a top-flight encounter 2-1 at Villa Park, the last match in front of the standing Holte End and our final game of the season as we finished in eighth, with Ronnie Whelan appearing for the 493rd and last time, Julian Dicks  playing his 28th and final reds game and Don Hutchison turning out for the sixtieth and last time. Dwight Yorke bagged the first two of his eight goals past us. Meanwhile, travelling fans were glued to their radios as Everton somehow stayed up following their relegation decider with Wimbledon.

2000 - David Thompson played his 56th and final reds game, coming on as a substitute as Southampton held us to a goalless draw at Anfield in the Premiership.

2006 - Our final League game of the season resulted in a 3-1 victory at Portsmouth as we won our eleventh consecutive match. Robbie Fowler was on target before Peter Crouch grabbed our hundredth goal of the campaign, and a club record 21st from a substitute, and Djibril Cissé struck his sixth goal in nine outings. The only downside was an injury to Xabi Alonso that affected his involvement in the FA Cup Final a week later. This win took us to 82 points, our then highest tally in a 38-game season.

2008 – The reserves beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the play-off final at Anfield to become Barclays Premier Reserve League champions, thanks to goals from Krisztián Németh, Jordy Brouwer and Lucas Leiva.

2017 – James Milner had a penalty saved as Southampton held us to a  goalless draw at Anfield.

2019 – We entertained Barcelona in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final, having lost the first meeting 3-0 and being without Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah due to injury. Divock Origi gave us an early lead, but we suffered another setback when left-back Andy Robertson had to be withdrawn at half time. However, substitute Gini Wijnaldum bagged a brace in a two-minute flurry before Origi completed a 4-0 rout from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quickly taken corner. Forward Daniel Sturridge came on to make his 160th and last appearance for the club.

2022 - Son Heung-min opened the scoring after the break for Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, one of his five goals past us to  that date. Luis Díaz levelled with a deflected strike as the 1-1 draw sent us top of the table with three games remaining.

1989 - strange occasion obviously. Think I most remember Aldo patting Brian Laws on the head after his own goal! That wasn’t our first semi final win without a replay though, we beat Forest the year before.

1994 - I remember the Everton game, but not really our one! Final day of the season then? Did Fowler score very early?

2000. - I liked David Thompson. He had some talent. Maybe Houllier was t a fan of his attitude because he shipped him out st a young age.

2006 - we won a lot of games back to back at the end of that season. We were starting to look like a well oiled machine.

2017- think we could have secured top 4 with a win. Ended up needing a few bites of the cherry.

2019 - don’t remember this one. ;) What a night. Just incredible. You always have that faint hope of a ‘famous Anfield night’ but they do t always happen. The early goal obviously gave us hope. Then things calmed down but I was ok with that. Remember saying to my son, 2-0 by 60 is fine. Those two in two minutes…never known anything like it. From that point it felt inevitable another goal would come. All that time I tried not to think about a Barca away goal, it was only when we went 4 up I started to stress about that!

2022 - felt like a hammer blow. City drew the next day to keep hopes alive. Had we won, I’m sure they would have too.

2008 - Fernando Torres scored in his eighth consecutive home League game, equalling Roger Hunt’s club record as we beat Manchester City 1-0. This was his 32nd goal of the season.

1974- Bill Shankly's last game in charge,

1976- Crowd at this looked incredible, a well known rawkite once told me a story of a friend of his going to this. He was approached by someone going to the ground, "if you need a ticket follow me". he did with some trepidation, next minute the guy pulls out a fucking sledgehammer. He proceeds to smash a hole in the wall, "in you go mate, in here for free". I dont care whether its true or not its gold!

1987- A fitting end in many ways, The Watford side featured a certain John Barnes, meanwhile on this day Everton won the title

1991- I remember only getting the second half, we were already 2 down. However we felt something special was happening when David Speedie pulled one back and then with a typical mazy bulldozing run Ronnie Rosenthal made it 2-2. However rather than motor on and win we conceded 2 late goals.
"thats the league over" muttered my brother as Chelsea added a 4th, we wouldnt win on this ground again until 2004.

Later on that day relegation threatened Sunderland held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw meaning we still had a mathematical chance to win the title.

2008- I was at this game, dull as hell, I think I nearly nodded off at one point. Fernando Torres got away from Richard Dunne just once all game and BOOM goal

Crowd really gave Lucas and Andriy Voronin an awful time, I do recall the city fans singing Sven Goran Eriksens name all game.

Happy Revenge Of The 5th Day

1990 - John Barnes scored a hat-trick as we came from behind in our 6-1 win at Coventry City, taking him to 22 League goals that season, with Kevin Gallacher bagging the home side’s opener. Ronnie Rosenthal netted a brace, with Ian Rush also on target in our final game of the season, in which we had clinched the title for the eighteenth and most recent time.

1990- Game started badly but then we just ran riot.

1996- Man city got relegated, mistakenly believing a draw would do they start wasting time and bringing it to the corner flag, to rub further salt in their wounds, the same day Manchester United won the title with a convincing 3-0 win at Middlesbrough

1999- Role reversal, we were shit yet managed to pull ourselves together to derail a title bid or at least try, similar to United this season.

2012- Andy Carroll was immense that day ,took us an hour to start playing. So nearly pulled it back, afterwards me and my brother decided to get absolutely shit faced. We only said last week that to this day we dont know how we got home. The next morning I woke up, still fully clothed and the blinds not even pulled. I knew that wasnt a good sign, as I turned over I saw I had thrown my guts up during the night and it was all over the sheets. Puked again before breakfast.

My brother meanwhile came in panicking, his ear was cut and there was blood on the bedroom door, not gushing but we still cant explain it. I then had to drive 2 hours to belfast and the following day was to do 5 miles of the belfast marathon. Given I had nothing to eat on this day and was hungover to fuck I dont know how I did it.

2014- urghhhhhhhhhhhhhh telly nearly went out the window
NEXT

2016- I remember the villareal manager saying that morning, "we will not be fazed by Anfield"

I read that and thought "somehow mate, you are wrong, you really shouldnt have said that"

We may have been 1 down from the first leg but we breezed past Villareal on this day, Emre Can had a stormer

May 6th

1986- Great intel this as many often wonder when we got the trophy given we won the league at Stamford Bridge and had no home league games left. Kenny as ever quick as a flash after when asked about our chances of winning the double against Everton in the Fa Cup a few days later "Well we are the only team that has a chance of doing it".

1991- A very disappointing day, though you knew even if we won it would be hard to catch Arsenal, for the record the Gunners won 3-1 that night at home to Manchester United anyway with Alan Smith scoring all 3. Bloody good scorer in his time.

1997- Again another league challenge bites the dust, despite Michael Owen's debut goal a 2-1 defeat at Wimbledon crowns Manchester United champions. I remember this was one day after Ireland's Ken Doherty ended the Crucible reign of the mighty Stephen Hendry to win the world snooker title. Hendry had won 5 titles in a row and 6 of the last 7, Doherty took him down, a huge win.

1998- A fine win to seal a top 3 spot, Arsenal just phoned it in having already won the league

2018- With all focus on the champions league final we were just phoning it in in the league, though after this we would lose just one league match until March 2020

2023- Good aul few pints watching this, the life

May 7th

1983- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvYLKiZm40U from 29:37 some nice footage here, Bob Paisley leads Liverpool at Anfield for the last time, as I said repeatedly here we got just two points from the final 7 league matches, this being one of them. Despite this, the title was won easily with Liverpool 11 points clear of Watford. Before the game Liverpool are presented with the league championship. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx5SJlnq6u4 extensive highlights here from the brilliant dave waller, I will watch later

1984- Nice revenge as Coventry had beat us 4-0 earlier in the season

1988- A late surge of goals in this one, I have never seen any footage, my brother said that by a lot of accounts the performance was every bit as impressive as the 5-0 win over Forest a month earlier. High praise indeed.

1994- Given some comments and research I would well believe this is the infamous "pass the pound" game.

2022- I was supposed to be at a gig with the family, I pulled out because of this, I know I would have been just on my phone all night, I gave the ticket to someone else, I dont think they minded but the stress levels were so high I couldnt miss a game. Going 1-0 down was awful, I remember Luis Diaz punching the ground he was getting so frustrated, I felt it too. Diaz did score a deflected equaliser but you just felt the league slip away, the next day Man City kept us in it coming from 2 down to draw 2-2 at West Ham, as others have said they might have won if we won, I know what they mean, but they were feeling the nerves too as they missed a late penalty

2019- I am in court, "your honour, may I present the following evidence, This is the greatest night of Anfield, and here is why"

May 8th
1971 - Arsenal completed the double, beating us 2-1 at Wembley in the FA Cup Final. Steve Heighway opened the scoring in extra time before Eddie Kelly equalised for the Gunners. Charlie George grabbed the winner with the first of his five goals past us - cue one very famous flat-out celebration. Future red Ray Kennedy appeared for the Gunners.

1972 - We faced Arsenal, holding them to a goalless draw at Highbury.

1974 - Bill Shankly took charge of his last official reds game as we drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in a game postponed from two months earlier, to end the season in second place, five points behind champions Leeds United. Centre-back Max Thompson made his reds bow, becoming our youngest League debutant to date, aged seventeen years and 129 days, just fifteen days younger than Michael Owen was on his debut 23 years later. Steve Heighway was on the scoresheet, while Ian Callaghan was making his 500th League appearance and left-back Alec Lindsay played his 200th game for the club.

1979 - A 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield handed us our eleventh League title, thanks to goals from Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott. We ended the season with a record 68 points and record goal difference of +69, having only conceded sixteen League goals during the entire campaign. This game was originally postponed from New Year’s Day.

1982 - We won at Birmingham City , with Ian Rush netting the only goal of the game.

1993 - We played Tottenham Hotspur , winning 6-2 at Anfield in our final game of the season as we finished sixth, with many fans expecting this to be Graeme Souness’s last game in charge, although he was actually watching Coventry City entertain Leeds United at the time. Ian Rush and John Barnes grabbed a brace each, with Rushie’s first being his 300th reds goal. Mark Walters also netted with the reds also benefitting from a Stuart Nethercott own goal that was initially credited as Steve Harkness’s first reds strike. Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Teddy Sheringham penalty, our first spot-kick save at Anfield in the Premier League. Sheringham got on the scoresheet anyway with one of his seven goals against the reds, as did Steve Sedgley for the visitors.

1999 – Midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri made his second and final reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday thanks to a late Richard Cresswell header. Ferri came on as a late substitute for Jamie Redknapp.

2001 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Chelsea. Michael Owen bagged a brace, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink twice drawing the visitors level, two of his seven goals against the reds.

2002 - We beat Blackburn Rovers 4-3 at home, having lost the lead three times before Emile Heskey finally won the game late on, to keep us on course to finish second in the League. Danny Murphy, Nicolas Anelka and Sami Hyypiä were the other scorers,

2004 - Emile Heskey bagged his sixtieth and final reds goal as we won 3-0 at his next club Birmingham City. Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard also struck, while the Blues had Kenny Cunningham sent off.

2005 - Our game with Arsenal ended in a 3-1 defeat at Highbury that ensured we would finish behind Everton in fifth place, although the glory of Istanbul was just around the corner. Steven Gerrard bagged our goal while playing his 200th League game, while Robert Pires netted the last of his four goals past us, with José Antonio Reyes and Cesc Fábregas also scoring.

2012 - Three days after losing out to Chelsea in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, we saw off Chelsea 4-1 at Anfield in May 2012 with the reds wearing special ‘Seeing Is Believing’ sponsored kits. Michael Essien’s own goal following fine work from Luis Suárez opened the scoring, with Jordan Henderson doubling our lead after one of many errors forced on John Terry. Daniel Agger headed in from a corner before Fernando Torres and Stewart Downing each hit the woodwork, with Downing then placing a spot-kick onto the post, a club record seventh penalty miss of the season, excluding shoot-outs. Ramires pulled a goal back for the visitors before Jonjo Shelvey completed the scoring.

2016 – Joe Allen struck his seventh and last goal for the club as we beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino also on target.

2021 - Thiago Alcântara bagged his first reds goal late on in our 2-0 defeat of Southampton behind closed doors at Anfield, after Sadio Mané had headed in the opener as Jürgen Klopp secured his hundredth Anfield win in all competitions.

May 9th

1973 - We were due to play a game, but our UEFA Cup Final first leg meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach at Anfield was postponed after only 27 minutes, due to a sodden pitch.

1987 - We drew 3-3 at Chelsea, with Ian Rush, Steve McMahon and John Aldridge on target in our final game of the season, as we ended nine points behind Everton in second place. Gary Gillespie made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future red David Speedie was amongst the scorers, with Gordon Durie netting the first of his six goals past us and John Bumstead also on target.

1988 - John Aldridge struck a spectacular overhead kick as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Luton Town to reach ninety points in our final League game of the campaign as Steve McMahon reached a century of League games for the reds. We had already clinched our seventeenth League title two weeks earlier. Nigel Spackman lined up alongside Gary Gillespie in central defence as Kenny Dalglish rested Alan Hansen ahead of the FA Cup Final, with Jan Mølby away on international duty. Unfortunately, Gillespie and Spackman collided when going for the same ball, resulting in them both taking to the Wembley turf in head bandages the following week! Before the game, the PFA’s Fair Play Trophy and a cheque for £2,000 was presented to Alan Hansen by PFA Secretary Gordon Taylor. The game was watched by 30,376 giving us an average home crowd of 39,682, the best in the division.

1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game.

1994 - Ian Rush bagged a brace, with John Barnes, Don Hutchison and Jamie Redknapp also scoring in a 5-0 SDS Challenge Series victory over Shelbourne at Tolka Park in Dublin.

2009 - We won 3-0 at West Ham United thanks to a Steven Gerrard brace and a goal from Ryan Babel. The skipper’s second goal came when keeper Robert Green saved his penalty, although he followed in to net the rebound. His first was his hundredth reds goal from open play. The comedy moment of the game came when David Di Michele performed a laughable dive that led to a booking.

2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance.

2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. Maxi Rodríguez scored a hat-trick, netting in his third consecutive game while Dirk Kuyt struck in his fifth appearance in a row, with Luis Suárez also on target. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 666th reds game, to move into second place on the all-time list, only behind Ian Callaghan.

May 8th- Famous celebration alright, Steve Heighway scored the first of two FA Cup final goals, really hot day and the players looked wrecked, the kits looked very heavy

1972- Was this the game that cost us the title? John Toshack had a late goal ruled out? Loads here used to say they heard it on the car radio, ran into the house celebrating and the goal was chalked off. I read Tommy Smiths book, he was still captain, he alleges Emlyn Hughes approached him before the game saying as Liverpool knew a win would win the title he spoke with some Arsenal players who agreed to throw the match for £50 a head.

Smith said he spoke it over with Ian Callaghan out of shock and suspected Hughes could have been trying to set him up, IE he wanted Smith to look bad by putting it to the whole team and suggesting they do it when it may not have been even true, Smith and Cally agreed to keep it to themselves, he also said he never told Bill Shankly as "it would break his heart".

1974- Always thought the FA cup final was his last game

1982- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvYLKiZm40U 23:08 A wonderfully taken goal from Ian Rush at Birmingham

1993- Fabulous win, some lovely goals. The situation around Graeme Souness not being there and instead attending Coventry vs Leeds was bizarre to say the least.

1999- I think a number of fans boycotted this as at the time Hillsborough had no memorial for the victims of the Hillsborough at the time. I attended Hillsborough recently for Wednesday's 3-0 win vs West Brom and there is now one near the Leppings lane end.

A very long article including the boycott is here and I havent managed to read it all yet

https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/1999/may/08/weekend7.weekend

2001- Michael Owen 2 Jimmy Floyd 2, Result irked me a wee bit as we would have sealed a top 3 spot for next seasons champions league, as it was we now needed a result on the final day at Charlton, main reason it irked me was we still had two cup finals to come, but I guess that ended ok

2002- The win moved Liverpool to 2nd in the table, unfortunately the league was gone and on the same night, not for the first time in their history, Arsenal won the league at the home of arguably their biggest rivals, Sylvain Wiltord scored the winner in a 1-0 win at Manchester United who going into the game still had a chance to win the title, the result meant United slipped to third behind us while Arsenal were league champions, at the time only the top 2 teams were guaranteed passage to the group stage, meaning third and fourth had a tricky play off to come. Finishing 2nd would be big.

2004- Watched that with my mrs, we werent going out long, we played some great stuff that day.

2012- Nice to get some revenge but a very consolation type win

2021- An indifferent season, we ended the day 6th, but Thiago bags his first LFC goal and there was still a chance to finish in the champions league spots, we were 7 points behind Chelsea in 3rd, 6 behind Leicester in 4th and had a game in hand on both, they also both had to play each other, West Ham in 5th were just a point away. Despite the indifferent season this was the first of 5 straight wins to round it off well and we took good momentum into the following season.

May 9th

1973- Despite the first game not lasting long Bill Shankly had seen enough to tweak things, John Toshack was brought in up front in place of Brian Hall and with two first half assists for Kevin Keegan it proved the right move. Keegan then turned provider for Larry Lloyd who scored number 3, Lloyd left Liverpool in 1974 and went on to win two European cups with Nottingham Forest, Lloyd passed away in March.

1987- Footage of the game here with John Aldridge unusually wearing number 7, it was also Ian Rush's last game before joining Juventus, he would rejoin us a year later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5ZFExnz-aQ goals are here. Chelsea lead the match three times.

1988- As mentioned Gillespie and Spackman banged heads, Kenny Dalglish came on as sub for a rare appearance, only his second all season. Ronnie Whelan was captain but would be left out of the following weeks Fa Cup squad, in later years a group I know on facebook conducted a signing with Whelan , I sent in a shirt from this season with the FA Cup final trefoil on it. The guy in charge got in touch with me, he said Whelan saw it and went
"Are you sure he wants me to sign this, I didnt play, thats why we fucking lost"

To be fair I said sign away and the guy went around to Whelans house and got it done.

1992- We had a nervy opening half at a wet Wembley stadium, but in the second half there was only one team in it as goals from Michael Thomas and Ian Rush gave us the win. John Barnes and Ronnie Whelan were injured the previous week and neither made the squad. Steve McManaman made his return from a back injury sustained in the semi final vs Portsmouth. Ray Houghton almost scored with an audacious shot from way out only for the ball to bounce over the bar, it was Houghton's last game for us.

Ronnie Moran lead the team out with Graeme Souness only released from hospital following bypass surgery, Souness had taken ill following the first semi final against Portsmouth. I read Souness book where he described it, it was sad to read how scared he was, he said the first operation he got an infection and almost died. Souness however made, in his words, "an almighty rick" by selling the story of his recovery to the S-n newspaper. There is no need to explain why that paper is hated, the story appeared on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Souness claimed that he only agreed to do this interview if Liverpool won their semi final replay against Portsmouth on April 13, however the match went to extra time and penalties, the publishing deadline was missed for April 14, hence why the story ran the next day. Souness said his contact at the S-n (Mike Ellis) would never have allowed the publishing on April 15 but he was off on leave.

However most Liverpool fans were wondering why Souness was even dealing with them in the first place, Souness claimed a number of current Liverpool players at the time were still dealing with the paper too. In later years Souness would apologize, in his book he claimed he knew he has pissed off everyone at the club as they didnt even send anyone to pick him up from hospital before the Cup final. Souness also admitted he should have resigned there and then.

A very sorry situation all round.

1994- No recollection of this even though I lived in Dublin then

2009- A very straight forward win which lifted us top of the table but Manchester United had two games in hand and were level on points with us, we had too much to do.

2010- Somewhat of a whimper as Rafa Benitez's career as manager ends with a bland 0-0 draw at Hull.

2011- Lovely win with some lovely goals. 5 goals in a row in 5 games for Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez scored a hat trick for the second time in three games and having been stuck in the bottom half when Kenny Dalglish took over, Liverpool were now up to 5th. There was still a chance to nab 4th but we were 4 points behind Man city who had a game in hand and we had just two games left.

Later that week Kenny Dalglish's return is made permanent and he is awarded a three year contract.

May 10th

1973 - We beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, to set us on course for our first European trophy. Kevin Keegan netted a brace, with Larry Lloyd also on the scoresheet, while both keepers saved a penalty in the game, from Keegan and Jupp Heynckes. The game had been abandoned the day before due to bad weather, with Shanks bringing in John Toshack for Brian Hall for the rearranged game.

1977 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City, a result that put our League title celebrations on hold for four more days.

1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted the only goal of the game as we triumphed over Club Brugge in our tenth game to date at Wembley, to become the first British side to retain the European Cup. The King chipped the ball over the advancing Belgian keeper shortly after the hour mark following Graeme Souness’s clever pass to him.

1983 - A testimonial for reds stalwart Phil Thompson was staged at Anfield as an England XI won 2-0, with ex-reds skipper Emlyn Hughes guesting for the reds. Paul Mariner and Gary Shaw scored for the England side.

1986 - We secured the second half of the double in the first all-Merseyside FA Cup Final. We became the first team to win the FA Cup without an Englishman in the team, with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to go with Craig Johnston’s goal in our 3-1 victory after Gary Lineker had put the Blues in front at the break with one of his six goals past us.

1989 - We faced Nottingham Forest in a top-flight meeting with John Aldridge nabbing the only goal of the game from the penalty spot late on at Anfield, three days after we had beaten them in the FA Cup Semi-final.

1995 – Ex-red Don Hutchison bagged a brace as we lost 3-0 at West Ham United, with midfielder Matty Holmes having opened the scoring. Mark Walters made his 124th and last appearance for the reds.

1996 - A Liverpool 88 XI drew 4-4 with Tranmere Rovers in a testimonial match for John Aldridge at Prenton Park.

1998 - Roy Evans’ last game as sole Manager came as we lost 1-0 at Derby County , our first game at their new Pride Park, with Paulo Wanchope on target with the first of his four strikes past us. We finished the season in third to qualify for the UEFA Cup, twelve points behind Manchester United in second. By the start of the next season Gérard Houllier was alongside him for a short-lived joint management venture.

2015 - We drew 1-1 at Chelsea, with John Terry nodding the home side in front. Steven Gerrard headed in just before the break. We had given the recently-crowned champions a guard of honour as they came out onto the pitch, while Philippe Coutinho reached a century of reds games.

2022 – We won 2-1 at Aston Villa. Douglas Luiz gave the home side an early lead, but Joël Matip rapidly levelled. Sadio Mané headed in the winner as we kept the pressure on Manchester City in the title race.

1979 – We won 1-0 at Middlesbrough thanks to a David Johnson header, having already clinched the League title.

1981 - A testimonial match for Steve Heighway was staged. A ‘Liverpool Past And Present’ side drew 2-2 with a similar Everton team at Anfield.

1982 - Kenny Dalglish played his 200th League game for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Arsenal in a match originally postponed four months earlier, with Ian Rush scoring our first goal in this fixture for five seasons. Alan Sunderland equalised for the Gunners shortly after the break with the last of his six strikes against us.

1985 At Valley Parade a disgarded cigarette caused a fire that killed 59 people

1985 – We beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield, with Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush both scoring in a two-minute spell, before Paul Birch scored a consolation.

1987 - Ian Rush played for the final time in his first spell as a reds player as we lost 3-0 to the Israeli national side in the Ramat-Gan Stadium.

1991 - Peter Beardsley played his 175th and last reds game, coming on as a substitute as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ian Rush and David Speedie.

1993 - We took part in a testimonial for Joey Jones as our meeting with Wrexham ended 2-2 at the Racecourse Ground. Ian Rush and Don Hutchison netted for the reds.

1996 - A huge disappointment came when we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United through a late Eric Cantona strike, the last of his five past us. The uninspiring game is perhaps best remembered for Liverpool’s white Armani suits.

1997 - John Barnes played his 407th and final reds game as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Jamie Redknapp netting our goal late on. This point ensured we finished ‘fourth in a two-horse race’ on goal difference. Stan Collymore was also making his final appearance for the club, his 81st.

2002 - Both Nicolas Anelka and Gary McAllister made their final reds appearances, with Nic scoring in our 5-0 rout of Ipswich Town at Anfield. John Arne Riise bagged a brace, with Michael Owen and Vladimír Šmicer scoring the other goals. Sami Hyypiä captained the reds for the hundredth time, with the result confirming the Tractor boys’ relegation, and our second-placed League finish.
Gary Mac said, “I will never forget today and I want to thank all the fans who gave me such a great ovation. I thought I would get a decent reception but that surpassed all my wildest dreams. That sort of ovation is normally reserved for players who have won European Cups for a club. It was a brilliant day and it was nice to hear the Kop’s humour at its best again when they were telling me to go back to Coventry.

2003 - We lost 2-1 at Chelsea, to be pipped to a place in the Champions League qualifiers by the home side. Sami Hyypiä opened the scoring, but Marcel Desailly and Jesper Grønkjær both also struck in the first half. Patrik Berger came on from the bench, to make his 196th and final reds appearance, while Steven Gerrard was dismissed late on for a wild challenge in our final game of the season.

2008 - Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin were on target in a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur. This was the first ever English top-flight match between two teams managed by Spaniards, while Torres struck his 24th League goal of the season in our final fixture, to break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record for an overseas player in his first English campaign. Meanwhile, this was Voronin’s sixth and final reds goal and Steve Finnan’s 217th and last game for the club.

2014 - We beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Anfield as we ended the season in second place as Manchester City won their game played at the same time to clinch the title. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as we went in a goal down at the break, an all-Premier League record fourth own goal in a season. Daniel Agger equalised while playing his 232nd and last reds game before Daniel Sturridge scored in a club record twentieth different Premier League game in a single campaign as we reached a top-flight club record of 101 goals. Shola Ameobi and substitute Paul Dummett were both then sent off for the visitors, although the latter card was later rescinded. Luis Suárez played his 133rd and final game for the club, with loanee left-back Aly Cissokho also turning out for the last time.

2016 - Christian Benteke headed in his tenth and last reds goal, an injury time equaliser as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea. Eden Hazard had given the Blues a half-time lead, one of his seven strikes past us to date.

May 12th
1965 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the European Cup as we lost 3-0 at Internazionale, going out at the Semi-final stage 4-3 on aggregate. The match was highly controversial with Inter’s first goal coming direct from a contentiously-awarded indirect free-kick, and the second coming after the ball was kicked out of Tommy Lawrence’s hands. Ian St. John also had a goal mysteriously disallowed. Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran played his 379th and final reds game in this match.

1969 - We lost at reigning champions Manchester City, Francis Lee struck the only goal of the game, one of his six past us.

1978 - David Fairclough scored a hat-trick as we drew 5-5 with Bolton Wanderers in a testimonial for ex-red Peter Thompson at Burnden Park. Toffee Duncan Mackenzie added a brace while guesting for the reds.

1984 - We clinched our fifteenth League title by holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane. This was our third consecutive championship, and the second part of a glorious treble claimed by Joe Fagan in his first season in charge. Left-back Alan Kennedy was playing his 300th reds game.

2001 - Michael Owen won the cup! A glorious day in our recent history saw us clinch the FA Cup in Cardiff, the second leg of the treble, despite going behind to a Freddie Ljungberg goal after surviving repeated Arsenal attacks, sometimes through dubious means! Two late, late Michael Owen goals won us the cup, and the Millennium Stadium was awash with overjoyed reds. This was the first time we had won an FA Cup Final while wearing an away kit.

2011 - Kenny Dalglish was re-appointed Manager permanently, leading us to a League Cup triumph at Wembley and 36 wins in 74 games until being sacked a year later. First-team coach Steve Clarke signed a new three-year contract on the same day.

2013 – Daniel Sturridge bagged his only reds hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Fulham, with Jonjo Shelvey playing his 69th and last reds game. Dimitar Berbatov had put the home side in front with the last of his five goals past us.

2019 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to secure a club record 97 points, a total only bettered twice in top-flight history, including Manchester City who ended the day on 98. Sadio Mané struck twice to end the campaign on 22 goals, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Alisson Becker kept his 21st League clean sheet of the season to claim the Golden Glove with a total only bettered once in Premier League history.

Boston- just reading through the list of Bradford victims and it’s shocking to see how many were close family members.

I remember thinking at the time it would have been immeasurably worse if they’d been caged in only for that to happen four years later.

1974 - A testimonial match for Ron Yeats was staged as we lost 4-1 to Celtic at Anfield. Tranmere Rovers’ Bobby Tynan grabbed our goal, while Bobby Charlton was amongst the scorers for the visitors.

1989 - We beat Wimbledon 2-1 at Plough Lane, with John Aldridge and John Barnes scoring. We went behind to an Alan Hansen own goal in the first half, playing his 400th League game for the club. We had already conceded an own goal in the reverse fixture that season courtesy of Steve Nicol, when Kenny Dalglish had experimented with a sweeper system. The second half saw Ian Rush come on for the rarely-used Alex Watson, and we stormed to victory. Hansen also put through his own net in the Anfield meeting the following season!

1997 - The last ever match at Roker Park was played, as we lost to Sunderland in a friendly with John Mullin grabbing the only goal of the game.

2006 - We claimed the FA Cup for the seventh time, in a game dubbed the ‘Gerrard Final’ after Steven Gerrard struck two stupendous shots. We went 2-0 down to West Ham United through a Jamie Carragher own goal followed by a Pepe Reina fumble that Dean Ashton profited from. Djibril Cissé gave us hope before half-time with Gerrard equalising after the break, his 24th goal in his 79th and final reds outing.Future red Paul Konchesky then struck a long-range fluke, our hundredth goal against under Rafael Benítez, with Stevie G scoring a stunning long-range effort as the game moved into injury time, a goal that was later voted as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Extra time saw no further score, with the reds triumphing 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out thanks to Pepe Reina’s three saves and successful strikes from Didi Hamann, playing his 283rd and last reds game, Gerrard and John Arne Riise. Fernando Morientes made his 61st and final reds appearance in this game, coming on for Harry Kewell who limped out of his third successive major final.

2007 - Robbie Fowler played the 39th and final game of his second spell with the reds, to take him to 369 appearances in total. Italian keeper Daniele Padelli played his only reds game as already-relegated Charlton Athletic held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Xabi Alonso was on target before Harry Kewell converted a penalty awarded just moments after Robbie had been withdrawn to an emotional standing ovation, his sixteenth and final reds strike. Darren Bent struck one of his five goals past the reds, with Matt Holland also on target.

2012 - Kenny Dalglish took charge of his last game as Manager as we lost 1-0 at Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea City, with Danny Graham bagging the only goal of the game late on as we finished the season in a disappointing eighth spot. Craig Bellamy, Alexander Doni, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodríguez all played their final games for the club. Future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker were on the winning side.

2018 – We thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield to secure fourth place in the League and a place in the following season’s UEFA Champions League, with Adam Lallana reaching a century of League appearances for the reds. Mohamed Salah scored his 32nd League goal of the season, a record in a 38-game Premier League campaign for any club. Dejan Lovren also headed in before the break, with Dominic Solanke finally bagging his first reds goal in his 27th and last game for the club. Andrew Robertson completed the scoring late on with his first for the reds, with Danny Ings making his 25th and final Liverpool appearance.

2021 – Mohamed Salah played his 200th reds game as we won 4-2 at Manchester United behind closed doors. We fell behind to a deflected Bruno Fernandes strike with Diogo Jota levelling the scores. Roberto Firmino netted either side of the break. Marcus Rashford reduced the arrears before Salah completed the scoring with his 124th reds goal in the final minute.

Dirk Kuyt got a really nice send off in that game against Swansea. Was a fun day all round as we also celebrated the “Aguerooo” moment that quite a few had on radios (there was one Manc team we clearly hated the most back then!)

2006 was just brilliant. I only made it to Cardiff twice during that whole Wembley rebuild era, but both were absolute shin bruisers (Arsenal and West Ham). I’ve said it before on here, the West Ham fans we mingled with were great that day. I know they get a fair bit of stick, but there’s plenty of decent hammers supporters (or there was back then!)
