Oh, these sour times.

No one admires resilience when you were just plain wrong all along - that's just twattishness.

ESPN won't change anything since the games are on FOX Sports 1 this cycle.  :)

You will get to enjoy Stoner, Alexi and Wynalda. A month of cringe.

Damn it. You're right. Fucking hell. That damn group of pundits are horrible.  :no

Well that's them screwed then because she isn't fit for the start and hasn't played properly for months. At best she will be a second half sub for the duration of the group stage.

It looks that way doesn't it. It's a shame too because there looks like there is some firepower without Morgan but with the way they play it doesn't come out. Very poor football.

I got to see her play for the NJ Sky Blue a lot in '14 and she was outstanding. I think Schmidt will do very well in the Women's World Cup.

I've long given up on trying to understand what Ellis is doing. It kind of makes sense if you look at it from the 'trying to replicate the system which was once so brilliant for them whilst also trying to move them towards something more in fitting with the current times' but the end result is neither here nor there, it's just a mess, and one which better coaches would have abandoned months ago as a lost cause. I know USSF have a reputation for being incompetent and such like but I still find it surprising that a country with the pedigree of the US have found themselves in the hands of a coach who is so utterly useless.

And what surprises me even more still is that they aren't the only country at the top end of the FIFA rankings in this position. It's hard enough to believe that a coach like Ellis exists in the job she has, but it's pretty astonishing that there is another one out there being every bit as pointless and puzzling as her. Mark Sampson has been stinking the place out for the last couple of months making almost identical moves with England. I don't know if his work is born entirely from his own mind or if he is taking inspiration from those at the top, but if it's the latter then he has absolutely picked the wrong country to copy.

Ellis accommodates Abby. Her presence looms over everything. She likes the play to be very direct.

This documentary was on BBC 2 last night. It's a sort of general history of the cup type deal with a bit of a preview of the next one at the end. Really good introduction to the faces and story so far for those who want it.

She did retire, briefly. She announced it straight after the 2012 Olympics, but she came back in 2014 for the Asian Cup last spring. Then she missed more or less a year through injury but is fit again for the World Cup. I expect this really be it for her now. And for quite a few other big names as well for that matter.

The BBC have full rights in the UK. Every match will be on TV or online, and for most matches you'll be able to chose between both options. Their full broadcast schedule is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32951310. British Eurosport have some but not all.

FOX Sport for the Americans. SBS for the Australians. CTV and TSN for the Canadians. I don't know the details for anywhere else.

GROUP A PREVIEW: Canada, China, Holland, New Zealand

Favourites

While every other group in the tournament has clear-cut favourites, Canada being seeded as host nation makes this group something of a toss-up. The teams are evenly matched but have limited experience playing each other which makes for an unpredictable set of matches. Still, the hosts have the edge.

The last time the Canadians played in a Women’s World Cup they came in dead last and scored one goal in three games. But these are different times with a different coach. John Herdman signed on after that 2011 humiliation and turned the team round so that they were able to win a bronze medal at the following year’s Olympics. Having that taste of success in 2012 seems to have increased Canada’s drive to succeed.

The captain, Christine Sinclair, is a seven-times nominee for Fifa Player of the Year and the indisputable focus of the Canadian attack. As long as Canada ensure their goal-scorer is not neutralised they will have a real chance of topping their group, which offers an easier path through the early knockout rounds. If the 32-year-old Sinclair is thinking about retirement, she will do everything she can to end her career with a World Cup win on home soil.

Dark horses

Holland have earned their spot at this World Cup. They faced a tough European qualifying schedule, finishing behind Norway in a six-team group and then on top in a four-game run-off series, to qualify for their first finals. They have benefited from an expanded tournament but there is no question they belong in Canada.

The coach, Roger Reijners, took the helm in 2010 and led the Dutch to the 2013 European Championship where they exited after the group stage. His previous coaching experience had been in the Dutch men’s second division.

Holland have plenty of youth and talent but experience may be a factor both within the squad and among the management.

Coach to watch

For casual observers of the women’s game, images of Chinese players lined up for a penalty shootout against the United States in the classic 1999 World Cup final may linger. But that match represents the last time the Chinese were a force in women’s soccer. The disappointment of that loss cost the Chinese women’s team sponsorships and public interest and the government diverted resources to sports where success seemed more likely. But now the Chinese are trying to force a comeback.

The person responsible for making that happen is the coach, Hao Wei. He is the team’s 12th manager since 2000 and took the helm after the Chinese failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2011. He is playing a long game by trying to develop young talent and expand the player pool, which may not yield real results until the next World Cup or beyond. But the rise of perennial rivals Japan in the women’s game and a growing focus on soccer in China has put pressure on the Chinese to change course. Wei may not be looking to win the 2015 World Cup but he will hope to capture a bit of the magic that the Chinese lost in the past 16 years.

Player to watch

At only 18 the Dutch striker Vivianne “Anna” Miedema has become one of the most clinical goalscorers in Europe. In European qualifying for this World Cup she was the top scorer with 16 goals. In three seasons in Holland’s top-flight domestic league she scored at a rate of more than a goal a game. She joined Bayern Munich this season and has continued to dominate with seven goals in 17 appearances.

On Holland’s World Cup debut there is no pressure to advance deep into the tournament but a more relaxed approach might allow Miedema to do what she does best. She recently told reporters she does not like to overthink things in front of the net and it has worked well for her so far. If Holland do well, it will probably mean Miedema had a few good games.

Commentator’s kit

Representing your country in one sport is all very well but how about doing it in two sports? The New Zealand goalkeeper Rebecca Rolls has 21 caps with the Football Ferns and was part of the squad that made it to the quarter-finals at the 2012 Olympics in London. But Rolls has the distinction of also representing her homeland in another sport: cricket. Rolls was a wicketkeeper/batsman for New Zealand, appearing in more than 100 international matches. The 39-year-old has experience of winning a World Cup – the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2000, New Zealand’s only title in cricket to date. - www.theguardian.com

It's harder to ping it off the woodwork twice than it is to put it in the back of the net. Real shame it didn't go in because it was very well hit. But you can bet that unprepared commentators everywhere have now scribbled 'free kick specialist' next to her name in their notes  ;D

I was super impressed by the skill on show in the last one. It is almost as if the slowed down version of the women's game adds to your appreciation of the skill involved.
The courts, the rich, the powerful or those in authority never lie. It has been dealt with 'by the courts' nothing to see here run along.

Not sure about the surfaces used in Canada but in Sweden "konstgräs" consisted of blades of reasonably realistic looking plastic "grass" and a shit ton of tiny rubber particles instead of sand granules. One of the more interesting side effects involved the bounce of the ball but one of the less pleasant side effects as a goalie was picking bits of rubber out of everywhere..............!

GROUP B PREVIEW: Germany, Ivory Coast, Norway and Thailand

Favourites

Germany were run close by Norway in the final of Euro 2013 but it is hard to see them being beaten to top spot in this group. Their long-serving coach, Silvia Neid, will leave her position next year and, although she and Germany won the 2007 World Cup together, there is a degree of unfinished business after losing to Japan on home soil in the quarter-finals of 2011.

Qualification was achieved with a 100% winning record and their 62 goals from 10 matches were eight more than France, the next-highest scorers, managed. Subsequent results have been equally impressive, a 3-0 win at Wembley in front of 45,619 supporters in November bringing their talents to a wide audience and two victories over Brazil in March and April reinforcing that this is the team they all have to outdo.

Veterans such as Birgit Prinz may no longer be around but Celia Sasic and Alexandra Popp are among those who should be able to rack up a comfortable enough goal difference against Ivory Coast and Thailand even if Norway manage to frustrate them in their second game.

Dark Horse

It is a toss up between Ivory Coast and Thailand, neither of whom have qualified for a World Cup before, with the latter more likely to pose a problem on the sole basis of their Fifa ranking (they are 29th, Ivory Coast are 67th). Both are genuine dark horses and neither can be said to be their continent’s surest bet: Thailand progressed after finishing fifth in the Women’s Asian Cup and Ivory Coast earned their place by coming third in the African equivalent. The Ivory Coast coach, Clementine Touré, has admitted that footage of Thailand’s games has been difficult to obtain and if Germany and Norway hit similar dead ends then a surprise may be possible.

But perhaps it is Touré’s side, which includes a sprinkling of players registered with big clubs in Russia and Sweden, that looks the most obvious threat to the established forces. How much of a threat will quickly become apparent – their World Cup debut is against Germany.

Coach to watch

Norway’s Even Pellerud has been here before. Quite literally, that is, as the 61-year-old coach was in charge of Canada between 1999 and 2008 and took them to their best-ever World Cup finish – fourth – in 2003. But Pellerud’s pedigree at the highest level is even more impressive than that: his first spell as Norway coach, a glorious seven-year stint from 1989 to 1996, will be etched forever in the country’s sporting history. Pellerud’s team were runners-up to USA in the inaugural Women’s World Cup, in 1991, and went one better in 1995 when they defeated Germany in the final. Norway have not had it remotely as good since and Pellerud, who returned for his second spell in 2012, will be expected to at least better their group-stage exit of four years ago. That run to the European Championship final suggested that things are on the right track and, while Norway are not among the favourites for this tournament, the wiliest of old foxes will be relishing what will probably be one last crack at Germany

Player to watch

Dzsenifer Marozsan was earmarked for stardom from a young age. The daughter of Janos Marozsan, who played four times for Hungary in the early 1990s, played her first senior game at the age of 14 for former club Saarbrucken and, nine years on, is now a thrilling force in midfield for Germany, the country in which she was raised. This will be her first senior World Cup, although she won the Golden Ball at the Under-20 World Cup in 2012, and viewers can expect to enjoy a technically superb creative talent capable of producing the unexpected with the ball at her feet. Marozsan can dribble, pass, shoot and run, and her 25 goals in just 48 caps should be added to in Canada.

Commentator’s kit

The Thailand striker Taneekarn Dangda is the younger sister of Teerasil Dangda, the prolific men’s team forward who became the first Thai to play in La Liga in August during a short-lived loan spell with Almería. In a further crossover with the men’s game, Celia Sasic takes her surname from husband Marko Sasic, a Croat who has had a modest career in Germany’s lower leagues and is a son of the former Kaiserslautern, Duisburg and Saarbrucken manager Milan Sasic. If Germany become surprise strugglers, then it might be worth considering that Fatmire Alushi, their gifted PSG midfielder, will miss the tournament due to pregnancy and the Ballon d’Or winner, Nadine Kessler, will play no part through injury. - www.theguardian.com

This site does a decent job of gathering up stream links: http://footballstreaming.info/streams/todays-links/index.html. You'll find at least one that works from there. Get it bookmarked for the next month.

http://cricfree.sx/football-live-stream has them - just scroll down and look for the Canadian flag - it has streams for both games today :)

http://coolsport.sx/ is worth a look at too in case the streams above aren't very good.

Finally Fox has a decent cast. I'm liking Kelly Smith, Heather Mitts and Ariane Hingst. Can they stay and boot the regulars out the door.
Indeed - I've been very impressed so far:  I honestly wasn't expecting to be.  And yes, would be thrilled if they ditched Rob Stone et al. and let this group handle all their football coverage going forward!

I'm off to Montréal on Thursday for a week of matches, including Brazil v Spain, Costa Rica v South Korea (think this'll be a cracker), Canada v Netherlands (my most anticipated match) and the last group match of the tournament, England v Colombia.  My third WWC and can't wait.  Really enjoyed the matches yesterday and I think we've got a great tournament in store!

If Germany could finish this would be about 6-0 already.

Ref has taken pity on the Ivorian goalkeeper there I think.
