Followed Bulgaria from the start of the tournament asit was the days when Adidas seemed to only have one shirt template and their red kid was identical to our home shirt! That diving header from Letchcov to knock out Germany was brilliant!

Was a fairly dull tournament from memory but Romania v the Argies and Brazil v Holland were great.

Low points were Italy beating Spain - who was it who smashed a Spaniard in the face and broke his nose? Tassotti on Luis Enrique? And the final itself was pretty terrible after all the hype about how good it would be.

Dont even recall that Saudi goal. Had it been a "big name" player. It would have gone down as one of the all time great goals

My first World Cup this, remember watching Germany v Bolivia on the opening 'day' and getting my head around the new rule that any tackle from behind was a red card.

that was my first World Cup too.. the game ended 1-0 to Germany.

still remember Bebeto's celebration against Holland

Romario was amazing as well. People remmeber Baggio, almost as much for the miss as the goals, but Romario was out of this world, scoring all sort of goals.

Was a hell of a header in the Sweden game that got them through.

Game of the tournament: tie between Argentina vs Romania and Brazil vs Holland
Player of the tournament: Baggio and Romario
Shock: Romania beating Argentina and Bulgaria beating Germany
Best goal: I like the Dumitrescu one against Argentina, was a hell of a team goal.

Nostalgia:

Went and found my tickets to the matches. They were $30 or $25 for first round games and $35 for the knockout round.

I saw:

Spain v Korea
Germany v Korea
Argentina v Bulgaria ( Maradonna was suspended by then)

And in the knock out round: Saudia Arabia v Sweden

Gave the tickets for Nigeria v Bulgaria to Mercedes and her hubby. So they could go to their first ever World Cup.

This one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av8mT-UpWNU

Thats what I remember most, the camera angle from right in the top corner. I reckon it was a shot though, he was good enough.

Also only remember 2 things from the final - Baggios horrible peno and the Italian keeper spilling a simple ball and it spinning back onto the post and into his arms, the look of relief on his face was priceless, think he might have kissed the post after :D

That's the difference between the two celebrations.

One is the most explosive show of passion and love and defiance seen in football. The other is choreographed and emotionesless.

The attendance throughout was immense (no doubt due to the massive stadia in the US).
I think USA 94 still holds the record for highest aggregate attendance and average match attendance in any World Cup. All this with a 24 team format which had 12 fewer games than the ones that followed.

My lasting memory was the Nigerian team and their game against Italy in the Second round.

This was my first proper World Cup, I used to celebrate like that (or like Brolin).

Remember loads from this tournament, Owairan's goal, Brazil 3 - Holland 2, Romario and Baggio being awesome, Pat Bonner messing up, Hagi and Stoichkov, Letchkov's header against Germany. Probably not the best tournament I've seen, but still, happy memories.

Such a dour World Cup.

I think it was the really hot weather that summer that made games so slow.

Not many iconic games, England not being there which was my 2nd world cup i watched.

Bulgarians were fantastic to watch, the game against Germany was the best of the Tournament.

Bright spot was me seeing a boss Brazilian team come out on top for the first time.

Romario's trademark toe poke finishes, what a player he was.

Wasn't the best of world cups ever but had it's moments.

Things that first come to my mind about it are Escobar,Milla, the wonderful Hagi,Romario's brilliance and their weird (then) goal celebrations with Bebeto.

Baggio is the one i remember. still to this day one of the best ive seen(on tv). stunning player. if italy had won that world cup he would be classed as one of the greats im sure.
Treason! The Divine Ponytail already is one of the greats. Italy's best attacker of all time in my eyes. Forget Riva, Del Piero, Bobo Vieri, Inzaghi, Tardelli, Rossi - none were the artist that Baggio was.

In all seriousness, Baggio will never be replicated. Footballers are better athletes now but the newer generation do seem to lack artistry. Baggio, Totti, Messi etc are a dying breed.

I remember it with mixed emotions. Fondly because it was the first World Cup ever for Norway, and even more fondly because we finished on top of our qualification group ahead of big shots like the Netherlands, England and Poland. We also played several memorable matches which included trashing Poland away (0-3), beating England at home (2-0), beating Turkey at home (3-1), beating the Netherlands at home (2-1) and decimated San Marino at home (10-0). Not something we were used to, to put it mildly.

So, we were flying high and I thought we had a fair shot of at least finishing 2nd in our group (after Italy). We started well by beating Mexico 1-0 then lost, as expected, against Italy (1-0). And then came the absolutely dross match against Ireland (0-0), which was a massive massive disappointment. All the teams in our group ended up on 4 points, but we scored the least amount of goals and finished last.

I rooted for Sweden after that (1/16 Swedish so I have an excuse!) and they had one hell of a run, providing the WC with some much needed entertainment. Absolutely trashed Bulgaria in the match for third-place.

I have vague recollections of this world cup, i remember Houghton's goal against Italy.

Columbia being predicted to win this WC by Pele, then getting knocked out in the group stages.

Ireland vs Mexico in the midday heat & humidity in summer in Florida, Aldo & Jack Charlton having a row with one of the officials on the touchline, when Ireland were trying to bring Aldo on as a sub.

Mexico vs Bulgaria second round match, one of the players breaking the net support at a corner, then 2 of the most ridiculous red cards that you'll ever see.

Roberto Baggio single handily getting Italy to the final, then missing the penalty in the shootout

The final itself being one of the dullest finals ever, then again having a midday kickoff in LA in middle of summer didn't help matters

Oh yep, Maradona against Greece, you know he was high in drugs after that goal, also the Greek HC throwing the teacups.

Some of the local kickoff times didn't help, the final being midday kickoff in LA in high summer, didn't help that out of the British Isles nations, only ROI qualified for 94 WC.

Just to add the first world cup match played indoors, at Pontiac Silverdome, half the stadiums used for this world cup have since been demolished or in the case of Soldier Field renovated, the other half are college stadiums which are still standing.

Was about to post about Bulgaria and turns out I’d said it years ago. :D

I was doing GCSEs that summer so don’t remeber many group games apart from the Ireland ones.

Yeah that header was brilliant. For someone of my age whose first tournament was World Cup 90 which the Germans had won, and then euro 92 where they’d got to the final- them losing to Bulgaria was a massive shock. They then went onto win euro 96 so a pretty incredible achievement from Stoichkov and his boys.
Italy in that World Cup reminded me of Argentina in 90. A really mediocre squad with an exceptional player in Baggio. I had Nigeria in the school sweepstake and couldn’t believe it when he equalised in stoppage time in the last 16.
94 Corner to us. Last kick. Ali in the box and he’s scored

It was crap.

It was far too hot to play proper football.

Talking about Sweden. Wasn't Thomas Brolin quite a central figure for them in that WC? I've seen him in one of those poker-shows a couple of years ago and was shocked at how fat he had gotten...
he was brilliant then, i wouldnt be shocked to see him fat now, he was pudding when he was leeds and palace

The Irish win over Italy was bloody great. Italy kinda used to start tournaments slow, if this was later in the tournament they would have beat Ireland.

Mind you Ireland had everything against them in that Mexican match. If Ireland won that group they would have stayed in New york, might have made the semi final although their style of play in those conditions meant they were their own worst enemy

I remember that goal post incident in the Bulgaria mexico game, it was absolutely hilarious.

As others mentioned that Saudi Arabia goal by Saeed Owairan against Belgium was great, i love that goal.

The Referees were very card happy in that tournament. Ray Houghton got booked for drinking water, Dennis irwin booked for time wasting when he took 9 seconds to take a throw, Tommy Coyne booked for refusing to use a stretcher

also Brazil switching captain during the tournament was a bit mad. Rai lost captaincy to Dunga

Rai was actually the brother of Socrates

On the subject of ridiculous bookings, didnt Zola get sent off for quite literally nothing? I remember him going down on his knees, head in hands with shock. It might be another tournament im misremembering but that was his World Cup over.

He was sent off against Nigeria wasn’t he? Italy equalised with ten men in the last minute.
