Something quite amusing was that Brazil only conceded their goal from messing about with the ball at the back.

I love watching this and any footage of Brazil from back then, brilliant. Pele, Jairzinho, the lot.

Their '82 side would take some beating, I reckon what I've seen, the footy of the '82 team was just as good. Falcao, Socrates and Zico were quite good!

I know they got beat like, but still. That Italian side was quality as well

Do they really?Although they've got some great skillful players,this side of their just look very workmanlike to me,compared with some of their sides of the past.
But that Brazil side is certainly the best I've ever seen,I was only a kid in 1970 but I used to love watching them play.The only side of theirs that has come close was the 1982 side who were knocked out by Italy in one of the best games I've seen.

I watched that final the other week. Brazil weren't the best international side ever judging by that game to be honest. They were bursting at the seams but falling short a lot in the final third, but then there came a point where they exploded and scored a couple of great goals. It was flashes of brilliance but not overly great football in between.

ok i'll be fair. you always get some idiots but in general i don't think you'd find a large proportion of united fans who would say best team ever. What i read on united forums can sometimes get ahead of itself but generally sticks to a debate of is this the greatest united squad of the modern era. it's generally argued that as a functioning squad yes but other first teams could have given them a serious run for their money in one off matches.

I agree. I'm not in a position to judge the 'best side' thing personally. The italian defence was very deep (and good) it seemed and were very tight on the attackers which left Gerson to ventue forward from time to time. He was definitely a worthy man of the match

Fitness and strength would be a huge issue i think if playing under todays rules. the sheer amount of work that goes into that today compared with what you hear about previous generations is phenomenal.

My grandad who is 91 still says to this day that the Hungary team of the 50s is the best International team he has ever seen....and that the AC Milan team of the late 80s is the best club side he has ever seen, followed by the Real Madrid team of the 50s.

I love the bit when Pele scores, but the ref has blown for half-time while the ball was in the air towards him. Pele's obviously a bit upset for a moment, but then everyone just trots off the field as if it doesn't matter.

Would never have happened today! Firstly, refs don't blow while a free-kick is being sent into the box these days, but both teams would have absolutely hounded the ref to overturn/confirm his decision.

That Milan side was something else and probably would have beaten our late 80s side over two legs as physically they were a bigger team, defensively better as well and the Dutch lads were unbelievable. Would have loved to have seen the Barnes, Beardsley team take them on as it would have been a classic.

Brazil 82 for me was the best attacking side I saw as not around for the Pele era and then the Spain team a decade ago was probably a better team. Some tremendous sides and nothing today comes close.

I believe Pele thought the 58 team was better!

I watched the Brazil v England game again a couple of years ago and was surprised by the fact that Pele played pretty shit and Astle played really well. Astle was public enemy number 1 for a few years after this game for missing a sitter.

I agree with the general sentiment of the OP though. Pele and Rivelino were an absolute joy to watch, though it seems unfair to single anyone out.

It was so frustrating in those days because there was absolutely no South American footy on TV at all. I think even that final was only shown once on the telly and that was live and seemed to be about midnight, from memory.

The pass from Carlos Alberto to Jairzinho befor the Pele header v Banks is a hidden gem.
