Wonderful tournament. You look at the French backline and midfield from that time....

France: Barthez - ok, not quite the best, but then you have...  Thuram, Blanc, Desailly, Lizarazu, marshalled by Deschamps, abetted by Petit, Vieira / Karembeu. What a defence and midfield. The French could play football for another 200 years and whatever they can put up against that will have done exceptionally well to just match them.

Italy had a solid spine and defence as well...in fact, that period was a great time for defenders and all round midfielders.

Can remember at the time the media did not really fancy France. Hansen tore into them saying Barthez was dodgy and they did not have a striker, Viera i think was left out of the squad.

Brazil were the big favourites with Rivaldo Ronaldo and Denilson.
No time for caution.

Surprised no one mentioned when all the Romanian players died their hair totally blonde after beating England and Columbia in their group, they didn't win a game after that, drawing with Tunisia before losing to Croatia in the Round of 16.

The players looked ridiculous.

Also USA vs Iran was a big deal back then, there was a running joke that the referee had to be from Iraq to make sure he was unbiased.

It was my first World Cup, still remember it like it was yesterday. For some reasons, World Cups that are held in Europe has a special feel about them, Germany 2006 wasn't that great but it felt like a proper World Cup to me.

I remember the Romania players with their blonde hair.

Highlights of the tournament for me:

- Morocco tearing Scotland a new one only to find out Brazil lost (threw) their game against Norway (was so sad for them back then)
- Zidane picking up a red card against Saudi Arabia, contributing very little throughout the tournament, then gets called the best player in the world for scoring 2 headers in the final
- Ortega's stupid red card
- Bergkamp breaking my heart
- Scotland's great opening game against Brazil
- Argentina and England's game... so many memories from that one, Owen's goal, Zanetti's brilliant equaliser, Campbell's canceled goal, Roa saving that last penalty and of course Beckham tumbling Simeone..
- Ronaldo's awesome performances
- Thuram scoring 2 (!) goals in the semi final
- Vlaovic and Suker destroying Germany
- The 3/4 game was something else as well

Great tournament overall but i would've loved to see Ronaldo playing fully fit in that final. Brazil would've won I reckon.

Vlaovic's celebration after scoring against Germany was one of my most favourite celebrations. He just kept shaking his head, as if to say how the fuck did I pull that one ;D

Ha, remember that vividly! Just walked away really casually. Did that make it 2 or 3 nil? Either way it was great, I think Germany had got out of jail late to beat Mexico in the round before so this result was a long time coming.

Well unless you considered Guivarc'h a striker  ;D, then yeah Dugarry was the only real striker they had.

Dugarry scored against South Africa in the first game then got injured till the final, poor Mark Fish scored twice in his own net that night.

Wasn't it Kenny who signed him for the Toon?

To be honest, can't blame anyone for signing him, his record is 1 in 2 if you take his Newcastle and National team spells out of the equation.

That was the 2nd goal, still one of my favourite celebrations. One thing that's often forgotten about that game is that the Germans were probably the better team, Ladic made a couple of miraculous saves, Jarni scored his only international goal (81 caps) and Vlaovic and Suker secured our most impressive result to date :)

Worns getting sent off changed the game if I recall correctly. Had the "All the Goals of France 98" DVD and it got some serious playback, only our 04/05 or perhaps 01/02 Season Reviews saw more of my DVD player (read: PS2) than that one.

Remember rushing home from school to watch the opener between Brazil and Scotland, I think I've still got the VHS tapes of all the games I watched.

Nigeria v Spain was one of the most memorable games, Sunday Oliseh's celebration is right up there with the best of them.

I was into La Liga and remember thinking that Spain would walk their group, I'll never forget Hierro's face when he realised Spain were going out despite battering Bulgaria 6-1 in the last game.

This was the best world cup for me

Born in 86 I was too young for 1990 and just don't remember much of 94.

This tournament had everything though, the presentation was great, even the music that accompanied it was great. Some great performances and iconic moments

Maybe it was because my age (I loved 2002 as well) but it was just really special watching this tournament

How shit was Bulgaria in that World Cup too. Lost 6-1 to Spain, 1-0 to Nigeria and drew 0-0 with Paraguay.

Quite the fall from 1994.

zidane '98? very overrated tournament, scored 2 headers in the final, nowhere before that. Most overrated and embellished player of his generation. Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Laudrup, all just as good as zidane, and in ronaldo's and laudrup's case better, comfortably so.

That was the time world cups became all commercialised and the fun went out of it, didnt enjoy the 98 world cup or any world cup since....apart from when Arsenal team mates Vieira and Petit combined to finish Brazil off in the final, or when Bergkamp magically knocked Argentina out.  Poor world cup over all, Zidane only turned up in the final, missed 3 games after stamping on some Saudi part timer. England had a decent team, bit unlucky to lose to Argentina, Owen scored that wonder goal.

Think you are being harsh on it being a poor world cup.

Lots of competitive matches throughout the tournament, and the knock out rounds were really good and competitive with teams playing to win not hoping to get lucky with the penalties.

I too didn't think it was a great world cup, but it had a great French defence and in my view the best defence in world cup history with that back 4. It was that defence which won them the trophy really.

In euro 2000 France were much, much better and complete team as Zidane was THE standout at that tournament.

Holland had an exciting team and a France-Holland final would have been an epic final in 98.

One thing I never forget is that, the late Tomislav Ivic trained the Iranian team in preparation for this WC, but then in a very strange turn of events and in a warm-up game, Iran lost 7-1 to AS Roma, causing the federation to sack the brilliant Ivic, install a domestic coach and 4 days later Iran went on to beat Inter 4-1 in a friendly. To this day, it's still argued that 7-1 game was a government order to make an excuse to sack Ivic, because apparently we had to go to the WC with an Iranian coach.

After Ivic unfairly got the sack (The greatest coach we've ever had), he made a comment that the only way Yugoslavia can beat Iran, is through a Mihajlovic free-kick, and man...the genius was right. That first game I won't forget, Nicely poised 0-0 going into the final quarter, and then BOOM !
Mihajlovic freekick wins it for Yugoslavia.

Yugoslavia-Germany was another great game. Germans trailing and then Tarnet twatting a freekick in, only for Bierhoff to equalize a few mins later.

It was something else. I don't know whether it was because I was a kid experiencing my World Cup, but the intensity and joy and vibe I was seeing on people 's faces during the tournament was something I'd never forget.

LILLIAN THURAM scoring his only EVER national goals in a WC semi-final in space of 6 minutes....written in the stars stuff.

I remember really liking the Italian team (Who wouldn't ? Most handsome team of all time ? ) , and actually weeping so hard after they went out to France in QF, I was devastated.

its all coming back to me now. I remember di biagio hitting the bar with his penalty and just slumping to the ground hands on head. i was flying to america the next morning. prediction thing we had at home i had italy winning it 1-0.

other interesting fact. austria scored 3 goals in the tournament. all 3 in the last minute in 3 different games. Toni Polster and Ogris i think scored some crackers. Polster was a pretty good player.

I always thought it was fixed.

Brazil looked a totally different team in the final, could never explain it.  They weren't just bad, they actually looked like they were throwing the match.

My favourite World Cup.

Some fantastic games and goals and world class players playing like they were world class.

Bergkamp getting goal of the tournament with that last minute goal against Argentina, Batistuta's hat trick against Jamaica was brilliant as well and Ronaldo being a force of nature.

Zidane showing the world the first time at what a player he was for the big occasion.

"Since its purchase by the sheikh of Abu Dhabi, Manchester City has managed to cheat its way into the top echelon of European football and create a global, immensely profitable football empire, ignoring rules along the way. The club's newfound glory is rooted in lies."

The whole situation with Ronaldo pre the match also.

Yep.  It all looked very dodgy indeed.

France - never won the world cup, playing on home turf.  I think the final was fixed.

Does seem dodgy looking back.

Maybe a deal was done... France went out in the group stages in 2002.

My first proper World Cup,

I remember bits of USA 94 but as an 8 year old then it’s all a bit sketchy; whereas I remember everything about this tournament. The BBC coverage music, the ads, the kits, the Sainsbury’s collectable coins

I loved that Brazil team and had that shirt with Ronaldo on the back, was gutted with what happened in the final

Brazil had a shite central defence though. Junior Baiano was awful as was Cesar Sampaio. Aldair was a good cb but had his work cut out for him with what was around him.

Leonardo was another liability imo. never rated him. Let Zidane run off him on both corners.

Maybe a deal was done... France went out in the group stages in 2002.

and got to the final again in 06 with some of the same players still in the side. Zidane wasnt fit in 02 and they underperformed as a team after winning the world cup and euros. a couple of top sides underperformed in 02. it was a weird world cup. Argentina were favourites to win it and went out in the group also. Portugal likewise.

i do find what happened Ronaldo before the 98 final odd and im always a bit suspicios of the French but if you compared the two teams , France were the more balanced team. the only place they were lacking a bit was up front.
