Do we need another game to see that Enrique is finished as a footballer? Do we need to throw Lucas at CB against Arsenal and United to know that he's not a long term option there? Do we waste a CM in Can by pushing him back into CB against two teams we need to beat? No is the answer for all 3 questions. If we had a couple of CBs in the U21s who could cover then we would use them. We've just used a team of them in the FA Cup (kids not CBs) and how many of our U21 CBs got on the pitch? None. I think that shows that we have nothing there to use and bringing Caulker in, someone who has played in the league before, is good business (as cover)
We know that neither Lucas nor Enrique are long term options at CB. We're talking short term solutions. Emergency solutions even.
As I understand it, we have senior CBs coming back from injury soon. So we're talking a couple of games and then we're back to normal. It's unfortunate that we play United and Arsenal, but that's how it is.
I want us to move away from this idea that it's OK to sign players, train them in top class facilities under top class coaches, pay them a lot of money and then don't expect much from. We need to set the standards high and we need to expect players to cope, even when it gets difficult. Or, ro re-phrase it, in particular when it gets difficult. The way I see it, that was what United did with McNair, Blackett and even Carrick at CB and it's something we don't do now. We want to protect ourselves against every possible situation.
It's got little to do with Caulker and everything to do with how we operate in general.
