Up to 8MB supposedly and that's at home right now when noone's logging on. I dread to think what it's like at 7pm when everyone gets back from work.
What's the issue with Canterbury too, I'm in Cambridge?! :o

Just had a call from BT Infinity offering me a free trial of the new fibre optic service until 31st December.  I've taken them up on it and should have it for August 25th.  Only downside is I'm already in a contract with O2 until Feb, so won't really save much (well £5 a month as I'll downgrade the package).

BT say I'll get around 100Mb/s down 15Mb/s up if all goes according to plan.

BT is up to 40Mb/s not 100Mb/s

If they told you 100meg, then you might be able to use a mis-sell as a way to get further discount when you have to start paying ;)

I'm still knocking barley 1 meg on "Talk Talk up to 24 Meg"

W*nkers.

I've got the exact same issue! It's been getting slower and slower, gone down from 1.2 meg to fucking 97kbps! Only "upgraded" to it cos aol told me they'd be using their own equipment at the local exchange so I didn't need to change to fibre optic. Had enough the other day, called the fuckers up, made them cancel my contract, now I'm getting 30mb from Virgin on the 3rd.

97KBPS FFS!

If I were to tell you that this test was done just now (and the above done just then), just 8 feet away from where the original was done (desk - doorway...router is on stairs so nearer doorway), would you consider that the router is absolute garbage or are there some settings that I need to look at?

Just sat over near the door now and my browser is flying in comparison.

You're talking about when you use your browser to search the IP Address to login to the router, yeah?

Should it not be a default id and password - admin/admin or something?

would you consider that the router is absolute garbage or are there some settings that I need to look at?

First thing to try is to connect your computer directly to the modem and then run the speedtest again. It will instantly determine if the issue is with the Virgin Internet connection or a wireless setup issue.

Sorry - no idea how I'd missed that!

By what means do you mean connect it directly...you mean wire it?

How do I then re-define the connection as wired rather than wireless?

I know that there have been a few posts suggesting that this speedtest site is fault to - where do we stand on that?

I've always found the speedtest to be pretty reliable.

Do you have a Virgin Modem plugged into a seperate router? Or is it one of their combined modem/router units?

It's the Netgear WMDG280 router.

Ok that's just a router, so you should have a cable modem that is connected into the WMDG280. The cable that runs from the modem to the router, take it out of the router and connect it to your computer. Reboot the modem and the PC and it should connect fine, then run the speedtest again.

Just had engineers out to put in the Infinity 3 trial - speed keeps alternating from a high of 25/20 to 15/8 ish - though over the next week those figures should at least double.  Max rated download is 100Mbs, though doubt you'd get near to that unless right next to the cabinet and you being the only one on it.
