If you want to get a good over view of R&B and The Blues you should check the Chess Records 1947-1975 Boxset. Muddy Waters, Etta James, Ruth Brown, Curtis Mayfield, i could go on. Also there's the  unknown gems on it that pop out at you. A lot to take in but worth the listen. If you're interested PM me and I'll throw you on the links.

http://www.amazon.com/Chess-Story-1947-1975-Various-Artists/dp/B00002MCI4/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1267475258&sr=1-7

As for Jazz, these should be a good starting point.

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters

Not Strictly Jazz in fact people would argue not at all but its a good intro into the world of 5 minute soloing.

Miles Davis - In a Silent Way

Maybe a stretch to far, it contains lots of noodling but also it has some beautiful atmospheric pieces and great solo's from the man himself. Smoke a spliff and it will all start to become apparent also you'll impress that girl with the sleeve of the record, it just looks so damn cool.

Donald Byrd - Byrd in Flight

A less well known artist then the aforementioned but a far less challenging record with structure and no mad cacophony of sounds, its just straight up Jazz with i wont step on your toes if you don't step on mine soloing. None the less a great record and slightly obscure so you can impress that chick. I doubt you will, girls don't like Jazz.

Chicago blues - toss up between Elmore James and Magic Sam

Delta Blues - Son House or Bukka White

Folk blues - Mississippi John Hurt

Jimmy Witherspoon, I just love "No Rollin' Blues".  Can't find it on utube though folks I'm afraid.  If you want a modern take on the blues then track down Two Gallants.

Theres just something about the blues.

Not something i'd ever really listened to before, although i'm pretty sure i would have heard me mum playin it years ago.

It just seems so........right??
The lyrics, the music, everything just seems so relevant.

Chains and things - could well have been written about my life.

Woke up this morning,
After another one of those crazy dreams
Oh, nothing is going right this morning,
The whole world is wrong it seems
Oh, I guess it's the chain that bind me
I can't shake it loose these chains and things

Got to work this morning,
Seems like everything is lost
I got a cold hearted wrong doing woman,
And a slave driving boss
I can't loosen these chains that bind me,
Can't shake them loosen these chains and things
Just can't loosen these chains and things

Well you talk about hard luck and trouble,
Seems to be my middle name
All the odds are against me,
Yes, I can only play a losing game
These chains that bind me,
Can't loosen these chains and things
Just can't loosen these chains and things

Oh, I would pack up and leave today people,
But I ain't got nowhere to go
Ain't got money to buy a ticket,
And I don't feel like walking anymore
These chains that bind me
I can't lose, I can't lose these chains and things

Its a proper close yer eyes, feel the music and let yer body move music!!!!

I cant believe how long its taken me to get onto it.

Lead Belly - Where Did YOu Sleep Last Night  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRtd9TFfScU

Freddie King - Hideaway http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbqtnNorgQA

Guitar Slim - The Things That I used to do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qh4QLiMkg

Ignore the rip off merchants from the 60s from these shores and even the 90s. These were true pioneers.

Some really great stuff there Skidz. Really loved the odetta track. The one I post below though a fusion with blues, hillbilly and country clearly has links to that Odetta theme.

I really do feel some of the delta stuff such as Robert J and i love Peter green's feel for the music though I have to honestly say I've never really been a true Blues lover and I really don't find much that's more irritating than the likes of Clapton churning out a fast fingered 50's chicago replica such as Further on down the road et alia.

Anyroad Skidz here's that band take

With rgds to "Where did you sleep last night", is that the one that Nirvana covered on the Unplugged album?????

FUckin love that song if it is and really wanna hear the original now.

It is Pascoli. As you rightly say it's a terrific song. From what I gather it's a traditional song adapted into The Blues as 'Where did you sleep last night' [figures i guess - seedy  :)] and into country genre as 'In the pines' of which there are some crappy takes but one amazing take by gene Clark off his Silverado live album which I'd say is the ultimate take on the song.

I'm trying a link to a snatch of gene Clark's take on it. Hope thelink works though you might have to register. it's worth it even for a 20 second snatch.

Son House - Death Letter Blues

Blind Willie McTell - Lord, Send Me An Angel

Robert Johnson - Hellhound On My Trail

It's not really about great tracks you need mate, you should just listen to any Bluesmen these guys recommend and do some research yourself and decide which one is for you. Ths blues is very subjective in a way that alot of people don't get. So it's better to let yourself make your own mind up.

and If your looking for a modern blues band...

Jimmy Hendrix - Power to Love
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

One of the things I love about the blues is how the old standards are played down throughout the years... Stop breaking down as performed by

Get "From the Cradle" (album) by Eric Clapton. Such an amazing blues album with insane guitar work.
