I'm amazed nobody has mentioned Junior Kimbrough! Here's a couple of his best:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/IuzNX4ZSbJc?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/IuzNX4ZSbJc?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/8MhPxRbgXkY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/8MhPxRbgXkY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB</a>

You can see where The Black Keys get some of their style from, especially the mournful way he sings. In fact, The Black Keys did a whole album of Junior Kimbrough cover versions, "Chulahoma". Well worth checking out:

The blues thread !
« Reply #201 on: July 20, 2011, 01:39:17 am »
My first thread here on RAWK :) Been posting on lfc.tv forums for a while.

So. I thought we should have a blues thread in which people can share music and opinions/thoughts about songs/artists. So let me begin!

One of my favorite songs ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fk2prKnYnI

I believe we need a new blues revolution. We have to get back to music where feelings and words matter instead of just beats. I mean you can enjoy blues songs for the rythm and such if you want but there's also the option of listening to the lyrics. These days that option is no longer here. And as I once said: Blues is not about escaping "the blues", it's about confronting it, and defeating it instead of running away.

John Mayall-blues breakers with Eric clapton is what got me into blues. Still learning. Bought an Albert king album and Robert Johnson album after having a search of the best blues albums online. I would recommend this strategy for anyone looking to learn about the blues

Some of the best blues tracks:

Howlin Wolf - Smokestack Lightning

http://www.youtube.com/v/A1FK620bS7A

B.B. King - Blues Boys Tune

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ny5ajCn0xw

Sonny Boy Williamson II - Nine Below Zero

http://www.youtube.com/v/AGUGXOxs6p0

Buddy Guy - First Time I Met The Blues

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_rd8y8A2oE

Rolling Stones Feat. Buddy Guy - Champaign and Reefer LIVE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeOw8JBmXsE

On a side note I play the harmonica so I usually tend to lean towards harmonica based tracks but Buddy and BB are priceless!

It's not bad Moldyman but there's a lot lost in the quality of the recording - no access to a decent mic? With slide and a poor recording it sounds like you're in the bathroom :D Something sounds odd about the tempo after the turnaround (1:40ish) but it's a good effort. What guitar are you using?

And whilst we're on Son House he wrote this whilst working for New York Central.

This intro doesn't make it onto most collections of his work - his voice is amazing, if a little heard to understand :D

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZEJN1r-ObDY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/ZEJN1r-ObDY?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Found this version which is rough and full of phlegmy growls and mumbling which adds to it's charm...

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/AZrYfiUztt8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/AZrYfiUztt8?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

...but he altered my favourite section so here's a less gritty version with it in.

    Asked the conductor,
"Please let me ride the blinds."
    I Asked the conductor,
"Please let me ride the blinds."
He said, "I wouldn't mind, Son,
But this Empire State ain't mine".

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/kwqeffiewBA?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;hd=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/kwqeffiewBA?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US&amp;amp;hd=1</a>

"A walk way between two passenger cars covered with either canvas or leather in an accordion shape. From the outside of the blinds to the outer edge of the cars there was a space about 24 inches wide. There was a ladder running up to the top of the car in this space and the bums would grap hold of the ladder and hold on to it. That was riding the blinds"

I wonder if he ever got to ride it.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. In my opinion (and a lot of others), the best British blues guitarist ever.

I was just about to post about Louisiana Red,and i found out he died last Friday.I was listening to his 1976 album Dead Stray Dog today on a bike ride.Shit.

Red knew the blues, both musically and in his life. His mum died not long after his birth and the klan lynched his dad.

Even in his later life he was still releasing great blues record's. in 2010 he released You Got To Move.

I dont know if any of you listened to Red,if not,you should. He really was that good.

RIP brother.

Elwood Blues: You may go if you wish. But remember this: walk away now and you walk away from your crafts, your skills, your vocations; leaving the next generation with nothing but recycled, digitally-sampled techno-grooves, quasi-synth rhythms, pseudo-songs of violence-laden gangsta-rap, acid pop, and simpering, saccharine, soulless slush. Depart now and you forever separate yourselves from the vital American legacies of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Memphis Slim, Blind Boy Fuller, Louis Jordan, Little Walter, Big Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson I and II, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Elvis Presley, Leiber and Stoller, and Robert K. Weiss.
Donald "Duck" Dunn: Who is Robert K. Weiss?
Elwood Blues: Turn your backs now and you snuff out the fragile candles of blues, R&B and soul, and when those flames flicker and expire, the light of the world is extinguished because the music which has moved mankind through seven decades leading to the millennium will wither and die on the vine of abandonment and neglect.

First guy that came to my mind, what a guy. So, so ahead of his time.. and the legacy and folklore attached to him makes him all the more interesting  ;D

Django Reinhardt came to mind when the OP mentioned jazz.. what a guitarist, a genius. And then you consider that he only had the use of two of his fingers on the fretboard, unbelievable, when you see how dexterous he was. His version of Honeysuckle Rose is a beauty.
Great chiefs and great loves in obliterated light

Despite all the hardships he endured in life, his song is currently leaving the solar system on Voyager...

I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.
