The French Ligue 1 thread
« on: July 29, 2005, 10:00:10 pm »
A thread for those who 'kind of' follow the Ligue 1.

New season just started today with an impressive 4-1 victory by Paris St-Germain over Metz. Kalou scored one goal, 3 assists. Motm.

Five in a row for Lyon? Doubt it. Allez Paris ! ;D

Glad to see Vladi and Cheyrou playing in the same squad again. I thought both played quite well. Smicer looked pretty tired in second half while Cheyrou was very lively, running everywhere, fighting to get the ball, etc. I can see him getting back to his best this season.

PSG 4 - 1  Metz
Marseille 0 - 2  Bordeaux
Nantes 2 - 0  Lens
Nice 1 - 1  Troyes
Lille 1 - 0  Rennes
Nancy 0 - 1  Monaco
Sochaux 0 - 1  Toulouse
Strasbourg 0 - 0  Auxerre
Saint-Etienne 0 - 0  AC Ajaccio
Le Mans 1 - 2  Lyon

1 Paris Saint-Germain 3 1 1 0 0 +3
2 Girondins de Bordeaux 3 1 1 0 0 +2
3 FC Nantes 3 1 1 0 0 +2
4 Olympique Lyonnais 3 1 1 0 0 +1
5 AS Monaco 3 1 1 0 0 +1
6 Lille OSC 3 1 1 0 0 +1
7 Toulouse FC 3 1 1 0 0 +1
8 OGC Nice 1 1 0 1 0 0
9 ES Troyes AC 1 1 0 1 0 0
10 AJ Auxerre 1 1 0 1 0 0
11 Saint-Etienne 1 1 0 1 0 0
12 Ajaccio AC 1 1 0 1 0 0
13 RC Strasbourg 1 1 0 1 0 0
14 Le Mans 0 1 0 0 1 -1
15 AS Nancy 0 1 0 0 1 -1
16 Rennes 0 1 0 0 1 -1
17 FC Sochaux 0 1 0 0 1 -1
18 Olympique de Marseille 0 1 0 0 1 -2
19 RC Lens 0 1 0 0 1 -2
20 FC Metz 0 1 0 0 1 -3

And next week we have Monaco playing Auxerre and Marseille travelling up north to play Lens. Another interesting one to follow would be Rennes vs Nantes (kind of Brittany derby).

Lens -  Marseille
Sochaux -  PSG
Metz -  Le Mans
Toulouse -  Nice
Bordeaux -  Nancy
Monaco -  Auxerre
AC Ajaccio -  Lille
Troyes -  Saint-Etienne
Rennes -  Nantes
Lyon -  Strasbourg

Hi,

Can't say I have ever followed it before and unless this thread goes till the end of the season I doubt I will keep an eye on it.

However being a fan of Vlad I will be hoping Bordeaux do very well.

Are they in Europe this year? UEFA cup if any I would imagine.

Third win in a row for Paris  :o

Can't remember the last time this happened...

Anyway, PSG top of the league as Nantes and Bordeaux lost to Ajaccio and Auxerre. Big clash on sunday with Marseille playing Lyon. Com'on GH, com'on Lyon!

What was the local reaction to Houllier becoming manager of OL? Do you think he can retain the title? Of course, PSG will be challenging hard ;)

Houillier isn't really popular (remember world cup 94 campaign ...)
We 'll see ;)

I hope paris can make it but our bench isn't nearly as good as lyon's one :/

Ahh, bollocks; Toulouse look vastly worse than they were last year. Mid-table languishing looks the best we could achieve. Again.

It's a bit depressing being a TFC fan, really. The city should be able to support a team at the very top, but instead everyone follows the rugby side.

I know, chatted a bit with him in town last year, when I was still living there. Seemed a very down-to-earth guy (he's from the Aveyron after all), but he never looked able to take the step up. Hope he'll relaunch his career at Guingamp (though it's got to change being that far north again ;) )

Great fans? Are you kidding? They start booing and insulting their players after a couple of poor results and you call them great fans?! Most of them are fickles (just as PSG fans really) and are only happy when their team wins every game at home by 3 or 4 goals (= never).

Apart from St-Etienne, and to some extent Nantes and Lens, don't see many great fans in French L1.

Great fans in the sense that the whole town moves with the fortunes of the club, more so than most places I've been. Somewhat fickle, perhaps, but not in the sense that they won't go to the game. Anyway, fickleness is the nature of the fan (and people at large). Witness popular opinion on Jamie Carragher, it didn't exactly set the world on fire before last season.

But Marseille fans are ridiculously/unrealistically/laughably demanding of their club, and that's what reminds me so much of Newcastle. Both sets of fans seem to think of thir clubs as sacred to the point that no living player or manager could ever suffice, and that can only contribute to the bad results. Both clubs could do well with less pressure.

Oh, and you also have the Tapie/Sheperd comparison that makes the analogy complete.

You can't, just face it! ;)

Anyway, agree with what you said about Marseille, a whole town being involved with their club etc. You don't see that in Paris. But Marseille is a smaller city, with a very strong identity imho. A bit like Newcastle or Liverpool (but the comparison is not valid because there are 2 clubs in Liverpool). They always felt apart (or ŕ part) from the rest of the country. Their football club is one of the few way they have to defy Paris and all. It's their pride.

Having say that, their expectation is ridiculous. How many managers have been appointed during the last 5 years at Marseille. 7? 8? The fans put such a pressure on the manager and the players that we start talking about 'crisis' after a few bad results. Remember the fans throwing stones at the players' cars in 1999 or 2000 because they had lost 3 games in a row, but they were still among the top 3 or 4. That's the sort of reaction that I despise.
