I believe this post is about Guardsman Wakefield RIP!

He shall not grow old as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary him nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember him

No longer do I see my friends who once marched by my side,
No longer can I hear the sound of voices raised in pride.
As we marched off down that road, to whatever lay in store,
Had I a choice of comrades, then I could not ask for more.

We set off then that autumn day, not knowing what lay ahead,
But soon we found out to our cost, there are no glorious dead.
Just young men who had no choice, we went with flags unfurled,
So that our kin could again rejoice, in peace throughout the world.

I came back, I don't know how, to see my folks again,
But I pray to God, my children, you will never experience the same.

It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence can confirm the death in Iraq of Guardsman Anthony John Wakefield during the early hours of 2 May 2005.

Guardsman Wakefield, a married father of three from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, died as a result of wounds sustained during a routine patrol in Al Amarah, Iraq. He was 24. His Company of the 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards is currently serving alongside 1 Staffords (Staffordshire Regt.) in Maysan Province, Iraq. The Commanding Officer of 1 Staffords, Lt Col Andrew Williams has paid tribute to Gdsm Wakefield’s professionalism:

"May I start by expressing my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Gdsm Wakefield.

"Gdsm Wakefield died in the early hours of 2 May 2005 as a result of wounds sustained during a patrol in the town of Al Amarah, Southern Iraq.

"He was acting as the top cover sentry in the second of a two vehicle patrol when what appears to have been an Improvised Explosive Device detonated – disabling the vehicle and injuring another soldier.

"Despite receiving first aid at the scene and in the helicopter that evacuated him, he sadly died of wounds shortly after being attended by the doctor at the Battlegroup’s base just outside the town.

"Gdsm Wakefield was a supremely fit and popular soldier who died doing his duty and amongst his friends. A proud Coldstream Guardsman, he was attached to the Staffords Battlegroup and had made many friends during his time with us.

"To all those who were lucky enough to know him, it was clear that he loved his duty and had a very bright future ahead of him. He was already a qualified Physical Training Instructor and had been selected to attend a course for promotion at the end of the 6 month tour.

"Gdsm Wakefield will be sorely missed by a great many people and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

When it was announced he was a Guardsman I thought for a horrible minute it might be your wife's mate's husband.  Thank God she is spared the grief, but another family is devastated and another three children have lost their father.  There was a video clip of him on the news and he looked a fine, lovely lad.  God rest his soul and bring comfort to his poor family.

Yesterday's soldier was named today:

A British soldier killed in a bomb attack on a military convoy in southern Iraq has been named.

L/Cpl Alan Brackenbury, 21, from East Yorkshire, was among troops targeted while travelling to meet security officials on Sunday.

Four other soldiers injured in the attack, in the Maysan region 160 miles north of Basra, were flown to hospital.

L/Cpl Brackenbury's father, Stephen, said: "It is some comfort to us that he died doing what he loved so much."

The death brings the number of British troops killed in Iraq since the start of military operations to 88.

The Ministry of Defence said the scene of the attack had been sealed off and that the incident was under investigation.

The Ministry of Defence said it was with "very deep regret" that it confirmed L/Cpl Brackenbury's death.

"He was immensely proud to be a soldier and we were immensely proud that he was a soldier," said his father.

There is a sizeable British contingent in that region and relations with the people of Amara are difficult
Charles Heyman
Jane's Information Group

"It is some comfort to us, as we grieve for Alan, that he died doing what he loved so much."

L/Cpl Brackenbury had been serving with the King's Royal Hussars in A Squadron - part of the 1 Staffords battlegroup in Iraq.

He joined the Army in 2000, and was promoted to Lance Corporal earlier this year.

Lieutenant Colonel Toby Bridge, Commanding Officer of the King's Royal Hussars, said the soldier's death was a "desperate loss".

The area around Amara has seen some of the British army's most fierce fighting with insurgents in the last two years.

Earlier this month, Anthony Wakefield became the 87th UK soldier to die during the conflict after a roadside bomb blast in the same area.

Rest in Peace fella

Me and Mrs BDL know him (by sight, not personally), we lived next to the KRH in Tidworth. Another sad day.

Deepest sympathy.  I read today that attacks on our lads in and around Amara are not being reported.  Any news on the truth of this from your squaddie sites BIGdava mate?

I know most of them weren't last year while I was there MM, my mum only knew we were getting attacked because I was on the phone to her when a mortar attack started. You'll find that 99% of aren't reported (unless a soldier dies) because it's just not news anymore.

Thanks mate.  :wave

The Mail today said that it was believed attacks go unreported, and that six attacks are believed to have happened in "recent months".  I thought it was just journo bull, but from what you say it seems not.  The families must be demented with worry.

Don't know about now MM, but there were (at times) up to 20 or 30 incidents a day last year, almost none of them reported back home. From what I've seen on tv so far, could be another interesting summer for the lads out there.

Most Army wives know what their husbands are going through, the majority of them just out it out of their minds and try to carry on as normal. It's the ones that sit and watch Sky News 24 hours a day and wait for the knock on the door that end up on Prozac.

I think if every incident was reported BigD, every paper in the land would be full up....from your random pop shots, to bombs, to RPG attacks to full on contacts....

It can work both ways really, No news is good news, News is something to worry about......The families know there is always danger out there, but the blueys that come through their doors can help ease the worry too... ;)

That's what I mean though mate, there's that many contacts they're not news now. It's only news when someone dies or gets injured. The same thing happened with NI - I remember attacks on police stations and watchtowers and the like when I was there that didn't get reported over here because they're not news.

RIP

For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Been a bad weekend for the Army:

Quote
A Scottish solider has died from heat-related injuries while training in Oman.
Corporal Peter Armour, from Glasgow, collapsed during a training run on 18 May and died nine days later.

The 26-year-old was serving with the Royal Corps of Signals as part of a regular deployment in Oman, unconnected to British operations in Iraq.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said Corporal Armour was on regular deployment in Oman.

"Corporal Armour was from Glasgow and married with one daughter," the spokesman added.

"The media are requested to respect the family's privacy at this very difficult time.

Thats not good to hear....R.I.P.

It's crazy the way you can go through all your medicals, there's nothing wrong and then you can go out and that'd happen....

Can't be helped and can't be foreseen....Heart problems have happened in the past and I suspect they'll continue... ???

Jst like the footballers that have died during matches...
