Nick Barmby on the move?
« on: May 1, 2002, 05:32:24 pm »
This morning I read that Nick Barmby has turned down a move to Tottenham because he doesn't want to move away from Hull, so it looks like the speculation on our forum that he is in the clear-out is true.

Why was he unable to force his way back into the first team?

Will we be able to recoup our trx fees to Everton if he moves on?

He seemed like a decent enough guy and a good player, and I am sorry to see him go.

It is a mystery to me.

Maybe GH has simply decided he isnt good enough, and that there is better quality out there.

Never was too sure about Barmbys ability or if he could make it at LFC. He had just started to win me over when he got that horrible run of injuries and bad luck. Looks as if he wont have a chance to do it for us now.

Swop for Kewell?? That'll keep barmby closer to hull!

I would be very pleased if you are right, Steve, and GH has targeted someone who is better, because like NHE, I was starting to really appreciate him when he went down injured.

I would like to see him stay, i think he has something to offer the team, and he is English. However, if Ged sells him to help finance a move for a trully world class midfielder then you cant complain  :)

It may sound strange but i think we have missed him this season especially in Europe. Think back to last season - goals from midfield. I thought i had forgotten what they were...

Important away goals in Europe and pace in the prem. I think its a shame and there are quite a few names on my list who would go before him...

We have DEFFO missed his goals.  Barmby was well on course to get at least 10 last year before injury, and he could our Ljunberg!

Barmby is a quality player but I reckon he cannot command a starting place now (nor can Smicer / Murphy but who knows) -- that just speaks volume of how far we have come.

Can't blame him though -- I would like to have a 100%-fit Barmby but maybe that is not going to happen since he is already 28 and we can probably only get 2-3 more years out of him.

I think he is going to Man City since Keegan seemed to quite like him...

good point about his missing goals in europe.

i like him, and hope he does stay. great attacking midfielder, english, plays well at the highest levels, scores goals, good to watch...

maybe as smicer seemingly messed up his chance, barmby will get his chance next season?

It is on .tv aswell.  I think he will stay it is just that Ged will be trying to give him maximum time possible to make sure he has recovered from his 2 ops so he doesn't have a relapse.

I reckon we will see alot more of him next season in the first team.

I like Barmbys workrate and his goals from midfield were certainly missed this term - hope he does well wherever he may go!

Barmby is a class act, when he is fit.  Unfortunately he was injured, we have missed his contribution from midfield this season.

Take it easy Nick, see you next season at Anfield.

Seems like most of us agree - top class player, get's goals in big games, great skills, when 100% should be in the team.

So that's him on his way then...

I have noticed that more than once in this thread, that people have made it a point to mention that Barmby's English.

Is it important??  Is it relevant where our player's come from?  Is Hyypia less valuable or commited compared to Barmby because he isn't English?

If anything, I think it's more relevant if our players were scouse or not!

Not sure if it's that important - but it is nice seeing our boys play for my country as well.  And it means there's no issues in fielding him (like there is with Baros, Smicer et al) or going on huge trips just for friendlies (eg. if we were to get Kewell).

I've just thought as well - he should be going to Japan but for the fact we've left him hanging around unused.  Damn shame.

ecm, as Life says its purely to do with no issues in fielding him and keeping permits.
