Anyone know if you can get a replacement licence (old paper to photo one) URGENTLY?
Tried emailing them - no luck and their phoneline is info only.
Probably can't be done, but need to get it by a week today.
Their standard turnaround is 15 days.  :-\

Might be like passports where you can go down to the main office and get one on the day.  Keep phoning until you get through

Obvious question but why do you need this?

If it's to hire a car they accept the old licence (they did for me in Ireland)

If it's to provide ID to Ryanair/Easyjet then I'm afraid you are stuck - might be quicker to get a passport...

I got mine in 7 days last week - you can go to the local office, pay, and get the photo / passport checked and that seems to speed the process up a bit.

Not sure if they'd guarantee 7 days though.

he's lost his licence and so needs a new one, otherwise I've got to do a 5 hour journey to Coruna as the sole
driver.  ::)

does he know his driver number?

just tell him, if stopped, to say he left it at home, but give them the number of the DVLA and his driver number, and passport if they're getting narky, they can ring, check, and on you go sir.

Really, what's the chances of getting stopped anyway?

I think the hire car company needs to see my licence before adding me to the insurance.
Will search more when I got home - won't be a problem sharing some of the driving anyway to be honest, but would rather it all be above board like.
Doubt there's any way of them getting it out to me in 4 working days and can't take a day off to do it either cos I got no holidays left.
Looks like it's all down to you Oll!

Just got an email reply.
If I drive to Swansea to hand in my app - they said it would be ready in 48 hours.
Can't take time off work to do that so that's the end of that idea.

Some of you may already know, me and my girlfriend bought a 1967 VW bettle a few weeks ago. At the moment it's in the garage getting it's MOT sorted, but it had no tax. As yet, the ownership papers have not arrived back to us, but we have the green slip that was part of the old owners papers. Can I use that to get a tax disk? along with the MOT and insurance certificates obviously.

Also, its been 3 weeks since we purchased the car. Should we give the old owner a call to make sure he sent the documents off? Thats what my girlfriend wants to do but I say we should give it 6 weeks like your supposed to then go throught the DVLA rather than contacting the pevious owner ourselves.

You can fill in a form called a V5 I think and get your tax with that until your proper logbook turns up.

I thought the very old cars, over 24 years old, were exempt from road tax? If not then it is the old owner who is liable not you if transfer of ownership notice is not given to the dvla

They changed it, it's not a rolling system anymore, but I think this car will probably qualify since I think anything older than 1973 qualifies, can't be arsed searching though.

It is definitely exempt but you still have to get a disc from the post office and show them a valid insurance certificate and MOT.

you have to be the current owner of the vehicle and have the tax book in your name.  even though the vehicle might be exempt from RFL (road fund licence) it still has to display a disc.

I don't think you can do it just with the slip but the PO will have a simple form that you can fill in and that takes the place of the registration document. As long as you have the MOT and the insurance you should be able to tax it.

you need the tax book to be in your name and have a v11 (vehicle relicence form - preprinted from dvla), this will only allow you to tax a vehicle at the post office.

Think it is 1973, they changed the rolling date because of the number of boy racer dickheads driving 30 year old escorts and fiestas.

Or even an 0870 number. And you'll find out the actual rules from the people who make them instead of made up bollocks and wildly differing opinion from some people on a football forum.
