Someone's just given me a Siglo Rioja Crianza 2001 (wrapped in some hessian for some reason)... any good?

If that is the one I think has it got a yellow label?

If it is, then it is pretty good.

Crianza is the quality level, basically one down from "Reserva" level.

Probably about £7 worth at a guess, good for drinking now.

It's a fairly cheap and cheerful Tempranillo I think (4 quid-odd?) - just interested because he's family, and haven't tried it yet

As in the grower is family?

How exciting, you can't go wrong with Tempranillo, unless you put it in a cool climate with chalky soil, then your fucked!

I shall have a try next time I am near M&S.

Yes, the Spanish side of the family's business has always been vineyards/bars/restaurants- Telmo is carrying that on now, and 'Marisa' is named after his wife. If you give it a go, tell us what you think

the other one you'll like is "Mondovino" a French documentary/film about the globalisation of the wine industry. (Basically a load of frogs and Italians having a go at some of the American multinationals)

Watched the above movie Sideways this afternoon.

Its a good movie but think ya might need to be bit of a wine lover to enjoy it, otherwise ya might find it a bit bland

Some guy from a wine merchant in Scarsdale. Anyway the important thing is my team won

We had to identfy the origin of four wines from four sets of two, same grape different region.
Got them all right and than I answered the tie break question to win - what is the number of grapes that can be or are used to create a Bordeaux. I answered 5, which was apparently correct.

Won yet another bottle of wine as a prize $:-\$

Interesting tiebreak question...depends on Red or White or Both

For Reds:
Cabernet Sauv
Merlot
Cabernet Franc
Petit Verdot
Malbec

For Whites:
Sauvignon Blanc
Ugni Blanc
Semillion
Muscadelle (forgot this as I am a plonker)

So I would assume they just were after Reds

Muscadelle is, your right. I knew I forgot one

Colombard is not allowed in the ACs i believe, mind you if you include the Table Wines then you are knackered as there are hundreds of varieties.

I think Soave has got a unfairly poor reputation, it is not bad at all.

Minervois is not at all bad, tend to get some shitting minervois, Fitou etc. but the good ones are very good.

going to taste the wines from the Chateau Villerambert, one of the best, a meeting with the owner followed by the tasting and then a listing of special prices just for us...

And by the way refering to the list of grapes you may find in bordeaux red wines, some more can be added to the list:
- bequignol
- bouchales
- carmenere

and probably some more... old varieties that certain producers try to accomodate...

As mentioned above they can not be grown in accordance with the WESPR guidlines to produce AC level wines.
