What Frank is doing at Brentford is not pretty, but it works. Very well.

Superstar managers like Mourinho and Ancelloti would have Brentford set up to play in the same way.

He will almost certainly get a shot at a bigger club.

Don’t really get the hate for how Brentford played. It’s not pretty but it’s not for us. They did everything they needed to do at Anfield. I’m massively glad they are in the Premier league and doing well for themselves. Breath of fresh air compared to some of the stale old shite that’s been languishing around for years.

But they didn't, did they? They lost!

They relied on long balls, free kicks, long throws etc.....when what they really needed to do was exploit the space left by Trent in open play.

It was crap tactics from Franck and borderline cheating.

Certainly not a "breath of fresh air" IMO.

For me, the two standout moments of the match were both TAA moments - a first half half-volley pass from the touchline (under pressure) to Robbo on the other flank, and the pass to Darwin that should have resulted in a goal. The lad is, after a barren spell, having a golden spell, and creating memorable moments.

Putting aside Taylor being an utter wanker, I do think we manage games like that poorly. Late in the game we really could have done with some players exchanging slightly safer passes high up the pitch or taking opportunities to give everyone a breather and get organised. Instead we tend to just let it turn into a basketball match where our own defenders get put under pressure constantly, resulting in lots of opportunities for the opposition to dive and cheat. It was irritating seeing Henderson come on to offer a bit of leadership, only to see him repeatedly lose the ball and try to force passes that weren't on whenever we had a chance to relieve the pressure.

I also think that while some referees are biased, plenty are just incompetent, and while understand how to take advantage of that we seem to play like we've never dealt with an English referee before.

Almost a third too with the screamer in the second half that Raya saved well. If he continues playing in that position he’ll get plenty of Gerrard type goals once the first one or two fly in.

Alas, that's the flip side. Even if West Ham play well, they'll give United everything to box us out.
Isn't West Ham, their bogey?
I can remember them frequently drawing and sometimes losing against them- going back to Ferguson's time there.

To some degree yes. But Everton was something of a bogey team for City at one point too.

With Moyes in charge, West Ham are more likely to raise their game against us than against United - and United will have the officials in their corner. Need to punish those dirty scousers.

Breath of fresh air?  They're not doing anything different from countless teams before them, from Wimbledon to Burnley to Stoke. Brighton are a breath of fresh air. Brentford's "style" of football will only get them so far.

In any case, I have no problem with how they played. I have a problem with how they cheated and how the referee enabled them.

This.  Fulham too, rolling around on the floor from the moment they take the lead in games (or want to grind out a 0-0) with a series of faux head injuries.  Running down the clock, an obsession with territory, halting the rhythm of play.  Pulis was doing all this years ago, Franks and Silva are no innovators.

Unless Brentford have a new Toney lined up, they’ll win far fewer games next season.

pressing them was pointless. You saw that when Mo went near that one,and he dived over. Linesman was flagging as furiously as he could.
Yeah - that prick lino made a the pushing gesture at Salah saying he pushed Henry over.

This is the same lino (and fucking cheating prick Taylor!) that didn't give a FK when Silva was manhandling Salah...

Just on the booking for timewasting…

He took 34 seconds to take a goal kick. So it’s maybe fair?

But hang on….

Brentford took TWO goal kicks more slowly.  Their longest took 42 seconds.  Guess what? The ref missed that

The ref is a fucking bellend. Sick to death of the biased c*nt refereeing our games and doing everything he can to give the opposition an advantage. Some of the freekicks and bookings he gave against us today were absolutely pathetic. Infuriating that these refs can get away with such shit decisions game after game without any fear of being held to account. The whole thing is a mess

Has anyone got any stats on how long Alisson took over goal-kicks today compared to, for example, Nick Pope at Anfield earlier this season?

The stats may prove me wrong but if the same thresholds applied to Alisson by Taylor were applied to all visiting goalkeepers I think we'd be playing against 10 men by half-time in most games.

You don't have to go back that far, J posted a twatter link that showed he took 33secs but the twat down the other end took as long as 47secs + a couple of others that took longer.

Tomkins recently had a piece on referees and how Liverpool are not getting their fair share of the big decisions from a lot of the refs. I think this match shows that this is missing at least half of the picture. The Anthony Taylor masterclass from today shows that you don¨t really have to rely on big calls to help/hurt a team. You can also just give every.single.small.call. to one side...
After 60 minutes I wasn¨t even angry anymore, I spent the rest of the match just laughing at the madness. Pure comedy gold from everyone in the corrupt Liverpool hating PMGOL. Hats off!
Yep.

6 in a row, can't complain about that..the game wasn't great fun to watch, but the overriding feeling I got from it was it wasn't very stressful for a change... Alisson not having anything to do really was a nice change...

Whilst they may have been something of a breath of fresh air generally speaking, I thought they were embarrassing yesterday. They can actually play football, but chose not to. Constantly throwing themselves to the ground like little children. Faking injury and wasting time by doing so even though they were losing the game. It was bizarre stuff from them.

I think Taylor had a lot to do with it. Once they realized they were going to get every single freekick they wanted, they just continued to do it to gain that advantage. I mean they are a team that thrive on set pieces.

I'd agree with that. The referee was absolutely abysmal. They played to break up our rhythm and get free kicks. The ref was falling over himself to indulge them, so no wonder they took full advantage.

Had a chuckle at him giving Alisson a yellow card for taking too long.  How often have keepers wasted time at anfield and were given nothing.  Or if they were carded it was close to the 90th minute mark.  I couldn't believe it.

They flop around a lot and Taylor was lapping it up - thats my only issue with them

He gave them easily 6-8 more free kicks than they deserved

Even funnier is Alisson barely wasted anytime when he gave them the yellow, he was looking to give it. Just like the yellow on Konate, was looking to give anything he could all game.

Thats a bit more what I was aiming at with my comments. They played what they could get against a team with unlimited resources compared them. Like I said, it's not pretty or even honourable in our eyes, but luckily for us we never have to stoop to that.
If they were doing that against City, in a title race - and nicked a point - we'd be laughing our socks off.

Fair point. I can see why some teams think they need to resort to that, but I actually had these down as a lot better than that. To be honest, if they'd concentrated more on actual football I think they might have even got something from the game. They aren't a bad side at all.

I think much of it was down to the appalling refereeing though. What a shambolic performance it was by him.

They don’t need to do it, these can actually play. They were a disgrace yesterday. You only had to look at one incident where they didn’t get a free kick. The player was incredulous that it didn’t come, it was almost as if he’d been expecting a free kick to be given.

This was one of the only games I can remember where even the comms called it out. Don't know who the main was but he said something anf even Beglin said the ref was being "too kind" to Brentford. Taylor's probably a monarchist.

Yet we got two yellow cards... and Brentford haven't been given a single yellow card for time wasting this season.

That's why I was so surprised by their approach. As you say, they can actually play. They have more than enough trouble us just by actually playing. Maybe they showed us and Anfield too much respect in that they felt they had to resort to lowering themselves to that extent if the wanted to get something from the game. They did themselves a real disservice though.

I'm not surprised they expected a free kick for everything because that ref was a mess. An embarrassing mess at that. There's two options when you see a performance like that. One is that he's grossly incompetent and unfit for purpose. The other is that he's biased, which also makes him unfit for purpose.
