Liverpool to play the national anthem v Brentford.
« on: May 5, 2023, 10:36:07 am »
Spineless yet again from our club.

https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/three-events-be-marked-anfield

This Saturday, May 6, will see three historic events marked at Anfield as Liverpool get set to welcome Brentford for their Premier League clash, kicking off at 5.30pm BST.

...

Saturday also marks the coronation of their Majesties the King and Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey. Just over a week ago, the Premier League contacted all home clubs and strongly suggested to mark this historic occasion across home matches this weekend and provided a list of activity for clubs to get involved in.

...

CORONATION: Before kick-off and in recognition of the Premier League’s request to mark the coronation, players and officials will congregate around the centre circle when the national anthem will be played. It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it.

Yeah but videos of thousands of fans booing the national anthem is just going to be played constantly. Thats far more impactful than just knowing we didnt play it.

Who cares. Other fans are obsessed with what we do (or don’t do). They’d whinge about it either way.

Quite enjoyed the official club statement talking about Eurovision first.

The fans wouldn't be booing it if it wasn't played.

The club have shifted any bad press onto the fans to save face.

I mean it's pretty stupid, but it's gonna be pretty funny tomorrow

I do feel it was strong armed onto the club, mainly because of the line in the official statement which was " It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it."

Basically outright saying they know we are going to boo it and everyone knows it, so don't be surprised that we don't respect this occasion

What kind of pressure are the club under to play it? What would happen if they didn't? It's not like they'd be sanctioned if they didn't.

The club are in a difficult position. Damned if they play it. Damned if they don't.

The fans will do what they feel appropriate. They'll also be damned or praised depending on who's commenting on them.

Yuck

You're right to describe it as spineless too. I imagine the club want an easy life, no drama - instead this'll cause ripples because huge number of those in the ground (not me this time, but I would) will not be joining the love in.

Would have been better off saying no thanks PL, if you want to show your respect you'd be smart enough not to televise it at anfield

And somewhere along the line the Irish will get blamed.

Anything short of our fans singing "God Save the King" with gusto would be criticized, so it doesn't really matter. As said here, why the fuck are we even playing it in the first place knowing what a very sizeable portion of our fan base think about it?

Booing is one option. YNWA over the top of it is another. Personally I liked Celtics "You can shove your coronation....". I'd go with that one. Try doing that anywhere else and you are apparently in danger of arrest, so I'd say its a pretty good oppurtunity to voice opinion.
