I'm trying to understand the first point of view - and I mean that! (I've never supported the mens team) - but, like, what are you wanting from the media?
Is it some kind of father ted lovely girls situation (but about football teams, not bottoms)? "of course, all scotland wales and northern ireland have lovely team too" whenever they say something nice about england?
do you not think that judging tens of millions of english for thinking 'the uk is england', based on a world cup final commentator, is a bit of a sweeping generalisation?
It’s probably harder to see from an English perspective, and that’s totally understandable. It’s not that the other home nations have lovely teams too (and I like that reference), it’s the level of hype that surrounds the England team is unmatched in the coverage of other home nations.
The reminders about 66 and questioning “is it coming home?” at every competition bring unison groans all over the rest of the uk. The PM and King will refer to the nation or country being behind the team, forgetting their nation is the UK, not England. In European competitions especially, where there is more than one home nation involved, the England slant is painfully obvious.
It’s to be expected, of course. England are the largest part of the uk, and the media is based in England. But it is still nausea by a thousand cumulative cuts. My generalisation was more towards the English Media than the English in general - I phrased it badly.
I’d probably be more tolerant of it if it wasn’t for the colonial legacy in Ireland.
