I'll never get comments like this. You're still English, and my guess is that the majority of Liverpudlians will get behind the WNT. One of the good things about Women's football is that it doesn't have all the vile and hateful stuff in it. Pls keep it to men's game.

In general I do however there's just something about England in football terms that gives me a certain amount of amusement when they lose. I'm kinda neutral about the ladies but the co-commentator got my back up today so started to cheer on the Spanish and was quite excited by it all in the end. I don't mind taking some shit in response either.

Won the Euros

Runners-Up in the World Cup

Their record is mad...

2 defeats in the last 20 games

Wiegman's record is equally as good

Sack Southgate and hire Wiegman

Still blows my mind the FA thought Phil Neville was capable of managing, well, anything at all.

England didn't perform today but Weigman's brilliant.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

My reasons for favouring Spain in the final are less to do with the legacy of British colonialism in Ireland, but more to do with the media coverage that we're subjected to in the present day. It's nauseating and a reminder that the UK is England, in the mind of the English.

That being said, I wouldn't have begrudged the England ladies a win. The men's team, though, is different.

I thought Spain were the better team and deserved their win. They play some lovely football.

Unlucky for England but I think the Spanish were overall better.
I tell you what though, if they were to take all the refs I’ve seen in this tournament and swap them with the goons from PGMOL, things would be a lot better in the PL

I caught the penalty decision and the clear, concise reasoning the referee made over the pa.

Not only would our goons get the decision wrong but I would imagine they’d struggle to string a sentence together.

In what way? The players who were dropped/quit the squad? What happened there then?
Really just making a point of how some who refused to play under Vilda any longer changed their mind and did so, while others stood by their decision. It's pretty widely accepted that, had there not been a tournament this summer, all fifteen who walked away would still be away, and that those who did go back only went back because they didn't wish to miss a World Cup. Which is completely understandable. You'll never see me saying a player should have to sacrifice their career to make a point of standards/treatment by their federation. I just wish this win could have happened after all fifteen players felt they could return and did ultimately return. Instead, we have those who stuck to their guns, plus those who did declare themselves available again only for Vilda to spitefully overlook them. Of those who wanted back in, he really did just select only those he knew he absolutely couldn't win the thing without and treated the rest as if they hadn't u-turned at all.

edit: I should add that I also feel for Jonatan Giraldez. In a few days from now he is going to have to go to work and contend with his Barcelona squad being made up of Spain's World Cup winners + Spain's ex-players who missed out on being World Cup Winners + Bronze & Walsh.

Sorry John. I must've missed the bit in the thread title that said it's for England supporters only.
I couldn't care less who won today, but the xenophobia from England fans here is making me glad they lost.

Do you understand what 'xenophobia' actually is? It's not just being biased in favour of one team. I haven't seen any xenophobia on this thread today.

Spain are generally on another level. But at the same time we’re al hypocrites. All of us would be moaning about being on the wrong end of a Real Madrid gamesmanship masterclass but would find it hilarious if they did it to City or United.

The sooner we all admit that and don’t get wound up by each other the better.

I'm trying to understand the first point of view - and I mean that! (I've never supported the mens team) - but, like, what are you wanting from the media?

Is it some kind of father ted lovely girls situation (but about football teams, not bottoms)? "of course, all scotland wales and northern ireland have lovely team too" whenever they say something nice about england?

do you not think that judging tens of millions of english for thinking 'the uk is england', based on a world cup final commentator, is a bit of a sweeping generalisation?

That sums it up for me too.  My feelings towards English female footballers is very different to their Male counterparts

I generally don't care about gamesmanship and didn't listen to the English commentators but I do wonder if they said anything about what the English players did before the Spain player hit that penalty.  A few of the English players went into the area and clearly tried to get in the head of the Spanish player.  No difference between that and the Spain players laying on the ground after being fouled in my opinion.

they did. they referred to it directly as some "dark arts".

to be fair, though it started that way from bronze only - the follow up actually was self inflicted (and deserved) by hermosa. if you're gonna place the ball nowhere near the spot people are going to enter the area to point it out and she just made her wait longer which might have contributed to her rubbish effort

Really enjoyed the tournament overall. Worthy winner in Spain, played the better football today. England struggled to cope and create many clear cut chances. They can be proud overall though and should be there or there abouts for the next couple of tournaments.

No coincidence that the two country’s with the best leagues met in the final.

It's good to see competitions being properly respected, I hate this idea of taking off medals just because you haven't won. It is still an achievement to reach a World Cup Final and they should take pride in that.

One of the highlights of the tournament for me was the lack of crowding out the ref/officials at nearly every decision.
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

One of the highlights of the tournament for me was the lack of crowding out the ref/officials at nearly every decision.

Yes, something which I really hope continues as the game hopefully goes on from strength to strength. It's been good for the women's game generally this World Cup despite the lack of respect from certain quarters within the game.

they did. they referred to it directly as some "dark arts".

to be fair, though it started that way from bronze only - the follow up actually was self inflicted (and deserved) by hermosa. if you're gonna place the ball nowhere near the spot people are going to enter the area to point it out and she just made her wait longer which might have contributed to her rubbish effort

Oh, ok.  Fair enough then.  There was no mention of anything that the Spanish players were doing and no mention of what happened on that penalty on the US broadcast.

Good to see. The men would've thrown their medals in the bin.
Hate it when they do that shit. "Oh let me quickly remove this medal off my neck for the cameras so viewers at home know I wanted to be a winner" ::)

I also like the lack of cheating compared to the men’s game. I guess this may come in time though but hopefully not.

If some of the talking heads in the womens game get their way, it'll go the same way, unfortunately.

It’s probably harder to see from an English perspective, and that’s totally understandable. It’s not that the other home nations have lovely teams too (and I like that reference), it’s the level of hype that surrounds the England team is unmatched in the coverage of other home nations.

The reminders about 66 and questioning “is it coming home?” at every competition bring unison groans all over the rest of the uk. The PM and King will refer to the nation or country being behind the team, forgetting their nation is the UK, not England. In European competitions especially, where there is more than one home nation involved, the England slant is painfully obvious.

It’s to be expected, of course. England are the largest part of the uk, and the media is based in England. But it is still nausea by a thousand cumulative cuts. My generalisation was more towards the English Media than the English in general - I phrased it badly.

I’d probably be more tolerant of it if it wasn’t for the colonial legacy in Ireland.

I’m indifferent to England, but couldn’t this be because England have an outside chance of winning a tournament whereas the other UK nations realistically don’t?

Apparently Olga Carmona's father died on Friday and they kept it from her until after the game so not to affect her frame of mind. Wow.
