it’s time to end drawn games
« on: September 3, 2022, 03:22:44 pm »
who wins a drawn game? that's right, nobody – we are all losers

3 points for a win and only 1 or a draw – that says it all right there

no matter how well your team played (or didn’t) or how many shots you had come back off the woodwork or saved by the keeper, you have still drawn the game

sometimes your team will score 2, 3 or even 4 goals – and if the other team score the same then you still only get 1 fucking point!

who really goes home ecstatically happy after a draw? really? come on! no one

dad to his son how did it go at football today son? fantastic dad – we drew!

i suggest that all drawn games have a 5-penalty shoot out at the end to give one of the teams the chance of victory

and to keep the traditionalists happy, if it’s still a tie after the shoot out then it stays a drawn game – that’s the only inch I’ll move on

the majority of games are won or lost - so the drawn games are still in the minority so it won’t be like we’re burning the rule book here

every single drawn game will have that added excitement of your team having the chance to come away with a win and 3 points

fucking world cups, no even better, fucking champions league finals have been decided on penalty shoot outs so what have we got to lose?

last season we drew 2 more than city and that really cost us the league – imagine if we’d had a chance to win those games!

imagine today for instance, playing the other lot and in the shoot out bobby scores the winner – it’d be like celebrating a cup win! we’d all go home with the biggest smiles yeeeessss!

and those teams – we all know who they are – that come for a draw and play 11 men at the back making no attempt to win the game at all and just frustrate both teams and fans will now think ‘hang on, what if we lose the shoot out?’ maybe we should try and fucking score!

...but even those teams might just win the shoot out – so that makes it even more exciting!

tell me, what fan has ever said we had a great season last season with 11 draws and 7 of them were brilliant 0-0s

we’ve moved on from 2 points to 3, from away goals meaning double to now meaning the same, to more subs etc etc

it has to be the future

I think zero points for a 0-0 and 1 point for a score draw.

No way do I want a penalty shoot out, that means more teams holding on and wasting time so they can take the 50/50 of a shoot out. Barmy.
The consequences of rejecting reality are not immediate but they are inevitable

Why should there be no points for a 0-0 as suggested on here? Both goalies and both sets of defences may have played blinders with fuck all reward!

Shared points for a draw is exactly how it should be, if a team feels hard done by in dropping 2 points then that's how it goes, not every result in footy is fair, win lose or draw.

Sometimes a draw earns a vital point for both teams as well...sorry mate, daft idea!

If the last few years has taught us anything, it's that more often than not, changes to the game make it worse, not better.

Good point. Can only think Hawkeye has improved the game over the past few years. Although I'm sure Sheff Utd fans would disagree.

If you're going to make changes, then I would suggest that, in the event of a score draw, the away side gets 2 points and the home side gets 1 point. That would incentivise the home side to fight for the win and the away side to at least try and score. But for a 0-0 draw, I'd keep it at one point apiece.

As deano said though, most changes intended to make the game better usually end up making it worse.  VAR has just set shit decision making in stone. Probably best to just leave well alone.

I don't always visit Lobster Pot.  But when I do. I sit.

I can see the logic in this. If two teams set themselves for a draw, most likely they'll get a draw. And tbf, most teams, most of their games, they actually play for a draw. I don't think anyone should get rewarded for such mentality, not even a point. There's no excitement in that.

A smaller team plays a bigger team with better players and much higher resources away from home, and then comes away with a battling 0-0 draw but doesn't get any points for it? Is that what people are actually suggesting here?

Maybe we should split the difference & award 1.5 points for a draw. You can get some cracking drawn matches where both sides go all out to win but it ends up 2-2 or 3-3 & they get penalised despite producing all that excitement.

Good idea but since the after-penalties draw will become such a rare event, how about actually increasing the reward for it so both sides get 4 points?  Would add an exciting bit of prisoner’s dilemma game theory to the outcome as the shootout approaches and plays out.

Also how about a bonus point for the side that most deserves to win the game?  A kind of artistic merit thing like in gymnastics.  The var panel are underused, they could do the judging.  Would also allow an extra commercial break to be squeezed in on say 85 minutes while they do a little presentation for it.

Has a really horrible American sports-type feel to this. It's a no from me.

Agree; sometimes a game is equal - so both teams get a point. There doesn't have to be a winner, or loser. Something US sports can't get their tiny brains around, so artificially have to play until somebody wins. Absolute garbage - and so are 'play offs' after a long league season.

To be fair they’d still have been buzzing with a 0-0 no points if we didn’t get any either

Maybe a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw or above for a second point for the winner. If a game ends 2-2 it's highly likely both teams have proper gone for it.
