The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Pleased that my team starts off with my namesakes!

Clemence

Neal
Hansen
Van Dijk
Hughes

Gerrard
Souness
Alonso
Barnes

Dalglish
Rush

Only went with people I've seen play, otherwise I would have liked to include Liddell and move Gerrard inside into Alonso's spot. I've also omitted recent players to avoid recency bias, except for Virgil, who had to be there. I can certainly see Trent, Alisson and a few others making this team in a few years time.

Apologies to your son for selecting players out of the positions he's given them. If it has to be done according to his lists, then bring in Alan Kennedy to left back ahead of Emlyn Hughes, and I'll pick Mo on the right wing, with Gerrard replacing Alonso in midfield.

This has been done loads of times so I'll merge it in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile I protest that both Riise and Kuyt should even be considered given our glorious list of greats.

I’ve seen all of them play other than Scott, Moran and Liddell. Apparently Liddell is cited as one of our best ever players but he obviously won’t get selected by many people as they haven’t seen him playing.

Good luck on trying to select 11 players as they are all excellent.

Cough cough

Ray Kennedy

Cough

Anyway that one glaring omission aside, do I have to pick someone from the RM group or can I for example use Gerrard as RM? Also can I include Ray?

Agreed. Ray Kennedy should be in the list. He was a strong elegant classy player.

No Toshack? He was relatively limited but very effective. He and Keegan formed one of the best partnerships.

Goalkeepers

Reina
Clemence
Becker
Scott
Grobbelaar

I never saw Scott so rather unfairly I would have to omit him.
It is a choice between Clemence and Alisson.
Alisson is possibly better but hasn’t been with us long enough yet so Clemence shades it.

Left Back

Riise
Kennedy
Moran
Robertson
Lindsay

Haven’t seen Moran so he’s out.
It’s between Lindsay and Robertson.
Lindsay shades it just.

Right Back

Babbel
Finnan
Neal
Lawler
Nicol
TAA

A close call between all of them.
Neal wins but only just.

Centre Backs

Hyppia
Carragher
Hansen
Yeats
Hughes
Thompson
Smith
VVD
Skrtel
Lawrenson

VVD walks straight in.
Hughes, Hyppia, Hansen or Lawrenson?
Hansen but only just.

Left Mid

Barnes
Liddell
McManamam
Mane
Berger

I haven’t seen Liddell so he’s out but only just as he apparently was a great player.
Mane or Barnes?
Surprisingly I’m going Mane.

Right Mid

Kuyt
Salah
Smicer
McMannaman (?)
Callaghan

Salah wins this one.

Centre Mid

Gerrard
Alonso
Henderson
Souness
Coutinho
Wijnaldum
Callaghan
Lee
Case
Hamman
Johnston
Molby

Souness or Gerrard. That’s almost impossible.
I’m going For both.

Strikers

Rush
Dalglish
Suarez
Torres
Owen
Keegan
Hunt
Firminho
Fowler
Aldridge

Firminho or Dalglish?
Dalglish by a short head.

Rush, Torres, Suarez or Fowler?
This is very hard as all 4 could be selected.
I’m going Suarez.

         Clemence
Neal  VVD  Hansen  Lindsay
Mane  Gerrard  Souness  Salah
          Suarez   Dalglish

I could easily have included Robertson, TAA, Barnes, Liddell etc and in reality they would be part of the first team squad.

Allison
Trent, Virgil, Hansen, Robertson
Barnes, Gerrard, Dalglish
Toshack, Rush, Keegan

I struggled leaving Clemence out, as he's the only player that I remember from my first ever game and I was playing keeper at the time, so I followed him intently for a few years but Allison has taken the position to a new level.
I shed a tear when Keegan left us. His time as England and Newcastle manager plus the shithouse way he left us, has tarnished his memory but for me, never has a player so achieved with the ability that he had. I can't put Keegan in without Toshack, if you weren't there, you might not understand.

I've got a feeling that this team will have at least three changes in three seasons time.

I'm going to go for our current system/formation and then think, who could improve on the players we currently have in our starting line up.

Alisson

TAA Hansen VVD Riise

Gerrard Souness Wijnaldum

Barnes Dalglish Mane

Riise because it needs an attacking LB in a Robertson mould.  Riise just edges it purely because of those goals he had in his locker.

Dalglish as a Bobby style false 9 (I considered Suarez and Fowler for this too).

Barnes as inverted winger playing in Salah's role.  Just the idea of peak Barnes playing in this team in that role... Drool

The other options I considered were playing Barnes where Wijnaldum is or Mascherano or Alonso in the middle of the three.  I always felt those two worked so well because they had each other as perfect foils.

I'll probably wake up tomorrow and think I've got it totally wrong.

I’m 31 so haven’t seen a lot of the greats. Will have a stab based on those listed in the opening post:

Scott

Neal
Hansen
VVD
Kennedy

Gerrard
Molby
Souness

Suarez
Dalglish
Liddell

433, Dalglish through the middle, Suarez and Liddell swapping wings but playing quite narrow to get into central positions.

There were some players it was very difficult to leave out, Hughes, Hendo for his leadership skills, Robbo, Reina, Allison, Trent, Mane. Was trying not to be too biased towards the current lot though.

I know this is just a bit of fun, but Riise over Robertson is bizarre. He scored a decent number of goals, but mainly from midfield, and he isn’t half the footballer Robertson is. We’d lose so much of our build up on the left side, and be worse in both defence and attack.

Wijnaldum is brilliant but there is a lot more to choose from who I personally think would be better suited in that midfield.

Just a few I didn't notice.

Beardsley, Henchoz, Heighway, St John, Staunton, Hughes,
Whelan, McDermott, Toshack, Fairclough.

honourable mention, McAllister.

As decent players as they were Beardsley, Staunton and Henchoz wouldn't even be near our best ever 3rd XI never mind best XI ever.

I didn't see Emlyn Hughes but my old fella always raves about how under rated he's become in the pantheon of Liverpool greats. Same with Phil Thompson.

I've been watching us since about 1985 ish and Gerrard, Barnes, Rush, VvD, Robertson would be the only definite. The 1st 4 because they are easily the best players in there position that have played for the club despite other great players playing in those positions. Robertson is a great player but at the moment he's a shoe-in because since the mid-80's we've struggled for a decent left back.

Think the hardest choice is up front. Rush is a shoe in. I didn't see peak Kenny or Keegan for Liverpool. But you've got still Suarez, Torres, Owen, Salah, Fowler, Firmino. Others will massively disagree but I'd say Fowler is the worst option out of that list of great players. He was a really really good player for us. A shining light in what was a relatively poor team. But the Premier league was poor overall then and Fowler's European and international records are both relatively average. I'm not sure he's anywhere near the same class as a Torres, Suarez or Salah.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Molby

Molby was brilliant in the run-in to 1985-86 season. Had a decent season the year after too. However, he wasn't;t really a regular for most of his time at Liverpool. Hardly played in the Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge season. Was injured and lost his place to Whelan (who moved from left mid to accommodate Barnes). The next few seasons he was a bit part player due to injuries, jail and fitness.

Molby's peak was brilliant but for most of his time at Liverpool he was a subsitute to others (namely McMahon and Whelan). Can you argue that his performances in 1985-86 (arguably one of our greatest seasons ever but not greatest team) elevate him above others?
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

With Klopp as manager and playing in his style with creative fullbacks...

Alisson

Gerrard Hansen VVD Robertson

               Fabinho
         Barnes      Gini

       Salah  Suarez  Mane

Modern players tending to edge it because of fitness, pace and not getting red carded every time they put in what was an acceptable challenge in the 70's. They spoke of Trent being the next Gerrard, in my team, it's true.

Edit: Alisson is off to one side cos he'll end up leaning against the post reading the paper for most of the match.

Bit of an arbitrary selection - for most positions it's almost impossible to choose just one...

Alisson

Neal Hansen VVD A.Kennedy

Henderson Gerrard Barnes

Salah Dalglish Rush

I'm only favouring Neal over Trent because Trent is still very young and just at the start of his career with a long way to go, but that's a tough choice.

Based on players I've seen, I'm going 442 with Souness and Alonso sitting deep and Gerrard and Barnes wide & more advanced:

Becker
Neal
Hansen
Big Virg
Nicol

Gerrard
Souness
Alonso
Barnes

Rush
Dalglish

Assuming they are all at their peak, that team would be just about unbeatable.

Not much to add except Alonso out for Souness due to title-winning CV and Alisson in due to him being amazing in the possession game :wave Trent is bordering on a spot and would probably claim it next year.

If I went 4-3-3, Xabi would go back in, Barnes would go out and then I'd give Salah and Suárez roles as inverted wingers with Dalglish as the false nine. Barnes was never really tried on the right as far as I know, but he and Salah are nip and tuck for such a role, assuming he can play there. Rush is the first man off the bench in any game, but I feel like Dalglish could play the Firmino role to perfection with Gerrard assisting him and those two would enable Salah and Suárez to score more and also aid Barnes and Mané when they come on.

I'd like one left-footer with experience of playing inverted in the XI up front, but let's face it: Mané is also unlucky to miss out.
