So is Ole comparing his team to the Jordan-era Bulls? I’m not a basketball fan but isn’t he about 7 titles light?

Jordan worked harder than anyone on his teams and was brutal to himself and his team-mates in order to win.. quite similar to #he who fannies about and dives around yes..

Reading up overnight the consensus appears that Ronaldo is a problem for his lack of tracking back , pressing etc, but keeps bailing them out of situations by scoring. I’m not much of a tactical analyst, but appears about right.

They got probably the easiest group you can get in the Champions League and Atalanta and Villareal were missing key players when they met them. Despite that, they could have easily lost their first four because they concede so many chances.

I'd prefer them qualifying because they are too good for the Europa and will win it but they'll get HAMMERED if they get drawn against one of the heavyweights.

as ole said, trophies are an ego thing, i guess that's why he sat their like a muppet and did fuckall in the europa league final, keeping it humble

i bet he'd bite your hand off for a trophy at this moment, dude has gone from a likeable guy* lucky to get his dream job (you can't fault him for that) to an absolute clown eroding his legacy there week by week - and dont let utd fans fool you that it's not happening, when he was failing at first (you know his cycle of boom or bust) the language used in reference to ole was almost always respectful, it's far from that now, his own are calling him everything a rival fan does

utterly out of his depth and hasn't a clue that he is - i dont think there's a worse position to be in

* even that has taken a hit due to his treatment of players, esp DVB and his tendency to bareface lie to players with total disregard for their careers, he now comes off as a total twat who cares only for his own skin and couldn't give a shit about his players beyond his favourites

i think at heart he is a nice guy and when he looks back at his tenure there he'll be quite appalled he acted like a total c*nt to a fair few players and disappointed in how self-absorbed he became

I watched the last 30 minutes last night and that pretty much sums it up.  Ronaldo is a square cog in the machine and he diminishes all of those around him but he simultaneously has such quality with his finishing that his goals keep them alive.  It feels like most top level managers would put the team above the individual in that scenario, especially when the individual in question is almost 37.

Defensively they're really poor as a team this season which is arguably OK if they're prolific at the other end Keegan-style.  Ronaldo has nine goals but apart from him in their 15 games this season they have 18 goals from the rest of the team.  Fernandes has gone from 28 goals last season to looking like getting 10-12 this season!

Mo is prolific this season with 15 goals but the rest have chipped in with 30 goals between them and arguably they have more firepower than we do.

Why do people keep talking about them easily winning the Europa if they drop into it? When they won it, they never played anyone decent. When they got to the semis a few years ago they lost to the first decent team they played (Sevilla), when they got to the final last season they lost to the first decent team they played (Villareal). It'd be funny to see what happened to them in a CL knockout tie against someone like Bayern or Atletico (or us obviously), but it'll still be funny to see them scrabbling about again on Thursday nights.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

How to write a Manchester United match report

Cristiano Ronaldo yet again rescued his team as United continue to find sillier, stupider but always slightly different ways to win, lose and draw football matches, writes a weary Mark Critchley

Honestly, this is getting rather exhausting now, writing on-the-whistle match reports on Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired late comeback after Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired late comeback. “Can’t you just copy and paste last week’s?,” you might ask. If only it were that simple. Unfortunately, Manchester United are finding sillier, stupider but always slightly different ways to win or lose and start the cycle all over again.

Still, this all feels familiar enough by now to build a framework; an outline of Ole-ball and its key dramatic principles, to help ease the writing process a little. It's a bit like an episode of Scooby Doo. You might not know who the villain is but you know you’ll have already encountered him along the way, just like you know there will be a chase sequence against an infinite loop background and a bit where Scooby and Shaggy eat those really big sandwiches.

Let’s start at the very beginning, an hour or so before kick-off, with the team news. There’s usually a couple of changes. Check who’s playing in midfield. It’s probably ‘McFred’, a selection which you can guarantee Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already being battered for on social media. It might not be ‘McFred’ though, at which point you already know that we’re going to be in for a long night.

If United are coming into the game off the back of a recent heavy defeat, there may be a new system to pore over. It has been three-at-the-back of late, it has been a midfield diamond in the past. It may have already been tested out a couple times, with faintly promising results. You might even have naively hailed this a fresh start or the break of a new dawn for Solskjaer, the sweet summer child that you are. They may even start quite well.

It’s around this point when United go behind. You can see the goal now. A press that is either disorganised or non-existent. A defence that has been dragged out of position. There will be someone at fault. Recently, it’s been Harry Maguire’s turn. It’s been Victor Lindelof in the past, Paul Pogba on occasion, Fred semi-regularly. That’s one thing you can say for this United side: they share the blame around. But when you have pointed the finger at so many individuals, it’s hard not to conclude that the issue must be collective.

At this stage, you can throw in one of the several statistics doing the rounds which could just as easily apply to an ambitious newly-promoted side that has played better than many expected but is stubbornly, fatally wedded to a style of play that’s beyond them. United have gone behind in more than half their games this season, don’t you know. That one is actually true by the way.

Things normally get worse before they get better, though not every goal conceded is pure slapstick. When United have bad spells during games, they can be bad in a fabulously mundane way. Let’s say the second comes off a set-piece, as plenty have done under Solskjaer over the past year. Two down, you can start to dig into the big ticket issues around the deeper malaise: the stale, nothing possession; the over-reliance on Bruno Fernandes to create; the problem of Ronaldo not pressing. You can really play the hits.

But then, out of nothing, they'll be back in it. It might be a bit like the first in Bergamo on Tuesday night, a thrilling, instinctive bit of passing and moving between Ronaldo, Fernandes and Mason Greenwood, which pulled Atalanta’s man-marking system apart, the delicate Fernandes backheel setting up the crowning moment of Ronaldo’s finish. It was a wonderful goal, the type United seemed incapable of producing based on their performance up to that point.

These are the individual moments of brilliance that many say Solskjaer's team is based on. You can see why some at United feel that is unfair. Where does the individual brilliance stop and the hours of coaching on the training ground start? How can anyone on the outside tell that from, at best, second-hand information? There’s a giveaway, though. Look for repetitions, look for patterns and they aren't there. The specific combination and movements of these brilliant, flowing moves are seen once a game at most.

But it’s an exaggeration to say every goal is born out of pure genius, in any case. United’s next may come through a sheer force of will, through the character that this group of players has shown to their credit in coming from behind so many times before. It may be a well-executed counter attack. It may be a Greenwood finish from an apparently impossible angle. You are reminded, in those moments, that this is still a team that usually wins more matches than it loses.

There might then be a little lull, as United pass through the eye of this storming comeback. Ronaldo starts to look frustrated. Fernandes starts popping up at right-back, playing defence-splitting passes into the space he is supposed to fill. Donny van de Beek’s warmed up only to sit back down again. Everything’s starting to look a little lost. Except you know, with this team, it is not.

Then it comes, usually in stoppage time, either by an impossibly clean strike from the edge of the box, a towering header on a hopeful cross, or maybe through a simple tap-in. Whichever way it comes, it is Ronaldo and you should have known it was inevitable. Don’t worry, though. That’s why we devised this template. Add your introduction and your pay-off, your top and your tail. Congratulations, the framework fits. United turned it around again. The only problem is that, by playing like this, every so often they won’t.

Because they’re still geared, financially and in terms of individuals, to win it or get near at least as you’ve outlined. Last night was an example of a EL final-like in terms of opponents and performance.

Do you really want Plastic Ronnie giving them another trophy, even if he deems it worthy of his personal contempt? Personally, I don’t want them to get near enough even to smell the fumes of silver polish.

They won't/wouldn't though.

Since Solskjaer took over, in Europe, they've won 19, drawn 6 and lost 10. And 12 of those wins were against Istanbul Bashekir, Astana, LASK, Young Boys, Partizan, Granada and Copenhagen. They're not a team of individuals managed by a good manager like Van Gaal or Mourinho, they're an awful team managed by the worst manager in the league. At the moment, aside from the good teams left in the Europa, there's a fair chance you'll also have the likes of Sevilla, Porto, Inter, Benfica and a few others dropping down.

The fact we still have fans getting a little bit bedwetty about them, considering the last three months, is almost as funny as whats happened this week with Conte.

It's like Moyes at Fulham.
Ronaldo is probably justifying his salary by keeping them in the CL to be fair. The money is eye watering in that comp.

If they fail to qualify from their CL group, them winning the Europa is a possibility, not the inevitability that some seem to be suggesting. But yeah, they've obviously got a much bigger chance of winning the Europa than the CL.

Best option, I reckon, is for them to qualify and then get absolutely annihilated in the first knockout round.

Then finish in the league in whatever position consigns them to the Europa Conference next season - which as Spurs are finding.

That one goal gives them the space to lose to Villarreal and still qualify by beating Young Boys at home (which they'll probably do)

I don't think it does, though. If Villarreal beat them by two goals and Atalanta win their remaining two games, they'll be out even if they beat Young Boys.

And again....why would people automatically think they'll beat Young Boys easily? They got demolished in the first game. Their home record this season is played 8, won 4, drawn 1, lost 3. Of the 4 they've won they played Leeds and Newcastle and scraped it late against Atalanta and Villareal after being comprehensively outplayed.

Has there been any explanation given as to why the equaliser was allowed to stand despite a clear handball by Greenwood?

Assuming the CL rules are the same as PL then I can only assume it's because of this rule that was brought in for 2021/22

The second change is on accidental handball in the immediate build-up to a goal. If an attacking player’s accidental handball immediately precedes another player scoring, the goal will now be awarded, when last season it was likely to have been ruled out. However, a player will still be penalised if he commits an accidental handball immediately before scoring himself.

Wasn't aware of that. Still seems a bit ridiculous. Clearly gained an advantage whether it was accidental or not.

Yep, last season it wouldn't have stood.

So if Salah had tapped in the Mane goal against Brighton it would have stood?

Manc at work bleating on about "Did you see that comeback last night?" Scraped a 2-2 draw against a shite Italian team.

Missed that game as I was watching the Manc game instead and saw a squad that cost over half a billion and get paid about £3million a week between them struggle to steal a draw from one of the weakest teams in the competition.

So if Salah had tapped in the Mane goal against Brighton it would have stood?

Think Salah was ahead of Mane and/or the ball so it would've been offside.
So bloody what? If you watch football to be absolutely miserable then go watch cricket.

According to the new rule change yes.  But then again it depends what arsehole is on VAR......

Think Salah was ahead of Mane and/or the ball so it would've been offside.

Salah was onside, even if he was in front of Mane because there was a Brighton player playing them onside.

Some of the Guardian match reports for United have been brilliant lately ;D
Rafa Benitez: "I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager. Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone."
