2019 RAWK Album of The Year. Votes in till 31 Dec
« on: December 7, 2019, 11:20:14 pm »
It doesn't matter that Sons of Kemet didn't reply to FlashingBlades email that they won RAOTY 2018 at all... this is still the definitive AOTY poll.

Music threads seem to have lightened in recent years... Klopp to blame maybe... I don't know. As I write I reckon I'm listening to the best album of the year but you may have other ideas...

Top 10.

Or Top 5 maybe. We'll consider that.

Top 10 reissues maybe too?

A look back, before we... fuck me... look forward.

Let's do this! Glad the thread has been started. I think it's been a brilliant year for music.

Got some more categories for you:

Top 5 Beard Oil Masterpieces, Top 5 Pointlessly Limited editions (but that were nice coloured vinyl so I couldn't resist buying them), Top 10 Records I Bought But Had To Send Back Because The Pressing is Shit, Top 3 Gigs That Yer Mate Chatted All The Way Through Til You Wanted To Murder Them, and Top One Time You Died On Stage Because You And The Bassist Are Idiots.

Or, just album of the fucking year, LET'S DO THIS!
get thee to the library before the c*nts close it down

we are a bunch of twats commenting on a website.

What should the deadline be? Shall we say 10 pm tonight? Or was last year January 8th or something? Or shall we get it done swiftly before New Year?

We know these things are a bit weird and some people take fucking weeks chin scratching the fuck out of their favourite albums and what have you... but let's keep things brief. We're going to end this around New Year. So if you're so inclined... let's aim for December 30th 12 pm... with caveats*.

* a caveat is a new phenomenon whereby in law, one can change their mind with impunity and dress it up as law at their will. This is because of a weekness in the system to hereby hold people to account, plus having a media to tell you that this isn't that necessary. I am that person... or may be. God willing.

I'll copy this into here...

Probably too early for an Album of the Year thread, with a month left for releases yet.  As such, I'll just post this in here for now and it can perhaps be moved to an early slot as and when the RAWK AOTY 2019 thread opens up.

Quite easy for me this year, as I've hardly bought much, in a uninspired year summed up with David Berman's death.

In no real order:-

1. Nick Cave - Ghosteen
2. Bill Callahan - Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest
3. Bruce Springsteen - Western Stars
4. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
5. Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell
6. Big Thief - UFOF
7. Wilco - Ode to Joy
8. Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
9. W. H. Lung - Incidental Music
10. Sandro Perri - Soft Landing  ( new artist to me, thanks to Red acid Sam)
Emily Hobhouse. Britain's finest.

Top Year IMO:

1. Richard Dawson – 2020
2. Purple Mountains – Purple Mountains
3. Weyes Blood – Titanic Rising
4. Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear
5. Lana Del Rey – Norman Fucking Rockwell
6. Pile – Green and Gray
7. Sunn O))) – Life Metal
8. A.A. Bondy – Enderless
9. Drahla – Useless Coordinates
10. King Midas Sound – Solitude

As per, the obligatory Top 50. Now I'm off to listen to some Floyd for the rest of the year :D

Thanks Alonso / Simon - superb list and interesting reading.

Included my top 10 (and the additional 40).

AOTY - 2019

1. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains.
This album gets me every time I listen. It contains the best lyrics of year and we could do a top 10 of one liners. It is beautifully backed by Woods. The story of David Berman is absolutely tragic but he has left us with this magical piece of work. If you don’t know of Silver Jews then just buy the back catalogue and thank me later.

2. Modern Nature - How To Live.
Jack Copper continues to deliver and this record is a real slow burn. It gets better with each listen and was very close to being my number one. This record also has another nice link with Woods as two members appear on the record.

3. Alex G - House Of Sugar.
Hooky lo fi melodies from one of the best songwriters of his generation. What is not to love?

4. Big Thief - UFOF / Big Thief - Two Hands.
Adrianne Lenker and her band decided to knock out two equally amazing albums that act as companion pieces. One of the hardest working bands around that get better.  Nice to see ‘Not’ finally make it on an LP having heard it over 18 months ago. I cannot decide between the two so lets just call it a double album :-)

5. Richard Dawson - 2020.
Words cannot really do this album justice. It is so on point with modern day Britain and so relevant - it is bleak but told with a deadpan humour that reveals more each listen. ’Jogging’ is the best song of 2019. An astonishing live act too.

6. Wilco - Ode To Joy
7. Ty Segall - First Taste
8. Mikal Cronin - The Seeker
9. Moon Duo - Stars Are The Light
10. Fontaines DC - Dogrel
11.Tropical Fuck Storm - Braindrops
12. Omni - Networker
13. Julia Jacklin - Crushing
14. Rustin Man - Drift Code
15. Cass McCombs- Tip of the Sphere
16. Hand Habits - placeholder
17. Thom Yorke - Anima
18. RF Shannon - Rain On Dust
19. Rose City Band - S/T
20. Wand - Laughing Matter

Bubbling Under (or 21-50 in no particular order):
Kevin Morby, The Stroppies, Robert Forster Bill Ryder-Jones, Allah-Las, Hiss Golden Messenger, Juan Waters, AA Bondy, Jeff Tweedy, Oh Sees, Gruff Rhys, Steve Gunn, Girl Band, Jay Som, Fat White Family, Bill Callahan, Dry Cleaning, Martin Frawley, Sharon Van Etten, Froth, Whitney, Stephen Malkmus, WH Lung, Angel Olsen, Deerhunter, Sandro Perri, Shana Clevland, Edwin Collins, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young

Awesome lists lads. Love this time of year, mostly for this (/these) thread(s). Thanks for doing this Filler mate and thanks everyone who has contributed, or will soon. If I forget to get round to doing one myself due to inveterate slackness, could you just say my top three is probably Dawson, Callahan and Rapsody, probably in that order? Ta. Really liked that FKA Twigs one too. Loads actually, it seems like it's been a pretty good year musicwise. Lots of good rap, for what seems like the first time in a while, a few decent bits of soul too. Which was nice.

Tool - Fear Inoculum.
"Since its purchase by the sheikh of Abu Dhabi, Manchester City has managed to cheat its way into the top echelon of European football and create a global, immensely profitable football empire, ignoring rules along the way. The club's newfound glory is rooted in lies."
