Times reporting that the BBC licence fee is to be scrapped and moved to a subscription model.

5 years ago I would care. Now, not at all.

My favourite part of the mooted proposal was that 'stars' could only have a contract with the BBC and not do work for other media companies. If that was the Tory plan- would like to see it extended so MPs can only have one job...

But how could they survive on the paltry MPs salary? ;D

Now will be a proper financial crisis for viewers. What number of subscriptions is breaking point? Amazon, Netflix, Disney, apple, Hulu, sky, bbc... it’ll be a fortune.

The only one of those that isn't currently a subscription is the BBC which you have to pay £12 a month for if you want any TV at all, so I'm not sure what your point is. If anything if the BBC went optional subscription service, it would be a potential saving, not an additional subscription surely?

The BBC is a brilliant organisation and you only realize how good it is when you go somewhere else. Radio stations, web pages and some good high quality TV.

It does seem totally unfair when TV users have to buy a licence when something like a 1/4 of people less than 25 hardly watch regular TV at all

I can't imagine a model for removal of the licence without putting BBC budget into taxes or totally slimming down the service to fund it.

Binning off 5 Live to substitute it with Talksport would be a step down

The headbangers on both left and right think it is biased against them...so bash it at every opportunity...which soon will leave the vast majority, who are more in the centre, to go without.

My point is that going back a few years, you didn’t need a plethora of subscriptions to access close to 100% of Available UK content.

Soon, if you want Disney, HBO, NBC, BBC, Netflix, Amazon etc digital content, you’ll need a separate subscription for each. Some are already pointing to it being unsustainable.

I find it impossible to talk to people who slag the BBC off,99% of them are just pig ignorant when it comes to the huge amount of 5* content they provide,be it TV,online or the radio and are too fucking dumb to understand that the only MPs who bang the abolish the license drum are in the pocket of Murdoch and the rest of the 0.5% c*nts.

It's about choice imo. If you want the BBC then pay for it and if you don't then you shouldn't be forced to. Also, paying pricks like Alan Shearer £400k a year is a disgraceful use of the licence fee.

If the licence fee is absolished then there is no 'choice' - it'll go under.

The Tories wanted it gone - they hate the BBC nearly as much as they hate the NHS, Social Care, Unemployment benefits and the rest

And thanks to the populace of the UK, their wish will be granted. Expect to see most radio stations to go - to be replaced by Right Wing Fox-like channels run by dickheads like Murdoch and most channels to be abolished - with the rest being financed by lobby groups that want to push a far-right agenda.

As a source of non-commercialised and (in theory) non-partisan news and information, is not also very important to society? There are other ways of ensuring such impartiality (or variety of sources to represent a breadth of views), but that will not happen in the UK. More unbridled power to Murdock et al.

I am all for having some sort of State broadcaster. I am massively pro State and if anything would like to see far more state intervention and reach and regulations in things like media, industry, food, safety etc.

However, the Beeb in its current form is not worthy of such protections. If we want to curb bias then regulations should be in place or should be put in place to do that and its one reason why Sky and ITV are hardly biased more or less than the Beeb.

There is a place for radio to be protected and maybe a single channel. But thats about it.

Dave Roback's died at the age of 61. Since a lot of people are fans of rock stars, musicians or rappers who may not be well known enough to warrant an individual thread, I thought I'd start off an all purpose one where people could post up their personal RIPs.

Anyway, Roback's been in a few different bands down the years but came to recognition as singer and guitarist in the terrific Rain Parade, thought by many to be the best band in California's Paisley Underground scene in the mid-80's, before hooking up with Hope Sandoval to form Mazzy Star, who remain one of the sexiest bands ever. He made some genuinely great music.

Absolutely gutted about David Roback. I love the Rain Parade (although he left after the debut album, so doesn't appear on Crashing Dream), Opal and Mazzy Star - all three bands with similar yet also distinct sounds. Really wish I had gone to see Mazzy Star a few years ago...

Thanks David, for all the great music.

Then we both agree it's not fit for purpose. If you do not agree with abolishing the compulsory fee, how do we cut the ties?

For me personally, I think there needs to legislation put in place that stops either large donaters to political parties, party members, party campaigners, or MPs from ever being employed there.

I recognise there are ways around those rules (simply don't broadcast your affiliations) but I'd prefer to have a go at tackling the issue rather than ignoring it and watching the BBC continue to lose credibility.

If it can't be reformed then I would support the removal of the the compulsory fee, why should they continue to have this entitlement when they do not deliver on their base remit?
