Surprised with the lack of mention of Ride on here.

There new singles sound good.

An Idles video that particularly tickled me...

Have watched it twice playing a 'name the artist' game, and I'm struggling with a few.

Got Monet's Sunflowers, think most of the rest are Rembrandts.

Class video, that. I should probably check out Idles, wasn't sure it'd be my cup of tea but I think I could actually get into them if that tune's anything to go by.

You meant Van Gogh... ;D I'd have to see it again to check for a Rembrandt.. think there's one yes. Not most of the rest tho ;) It's a good album. Very good in fact.

I know exactly what I meant sir, it's a fucking Monet. You know, the bloke that did Guernica and the cow cut in half. And all the rest are Rembrandts, without exception.

I going to reveal my ignorance by telling you the only one where I genuinely got artist and painting was the Sunflowers, that's how poor my art knowledge is. There was a Monet too, but I buggered if I know the name of the painting. Waterlilies on a Pond or some shit. Pretty sure there's at least one Picasso, but then I always get confused between him and Braques, and probably others!

I do remember going to the National Gallery a couple of years back, seeing that picture of the horse and thinking to myself, fuck, horses are hard to draw, that man had skills. No idea who the artist was though. In my head the pictures title is The Horse.

George Stubbs. I think it may be called A Horse. Something very simple though. Not a name of a horse like 'Two Headed Sex Beast' or anything.

I am a Horse!

Absolutely loving the All Them Witches record. It's just got a bit of everything. Noise, melodies, jangle etc.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Just announced for Green Man.

Listened to their 6 music live set the other day. sounded fantastic.

I was amused by the contrast in some of their material, the fact that early songs are quite naive musically - the kind of simple guitar stuff lots of kids in practice rooms would come up with the country over. Yet being played with massively increased musical prowess by grizzled and experienced adults really lent them a power they didn't previously have (also its not as trebly and early 90s sounding as their initial records).

Kelly Lee Owens LP is seriously good. A bit like the Gwenno LP I loved last year (or was it the year before?) as in female vocals with keyboards and reverb, also Welsh, but going harder on the dance influences, sub bass and great rhythms everywhere. Wales is on fire at the moment, some great artists out there.

Saw that announcement - just hope I can get down there on the Thursday!

Yeah me too - I think last time we made it for Thursday but were too wiped out to actually watch any of the evening bands, think I caught a bit of Flamingods and that was it.

Already gutted the family car park tickets have sold out - I mean am I going to have to cart all my stuff from the opposite end of the site? Fuck that.

Really digging the Gnod album. Another on the heavier side of things that I'm liking a lot.

Kendrick's new song is great too.

Yeah, the #1 they got right. Was never really into britpop but Different Class is such an amazing album any category. I feel Pulp is really the only band that have really stood the test of time from that scene, probably because their music was rather timeless even in the 80's.

I would have Good Humor up there too. I guess it doesn't really fit into the genre even if So Tough apparently do. Saint Etienne was probably too cool for britpop anyway.  ;D

SFA still sound good if they're lumped in with Britpop.

Might not be a very cool thing to say but Definitely Maybe still sounds great. Suede as well. That's about it though I think.

SFA were best thing to come out of Britpop.

Starting to like the FJM album more and more. It's been revealing itself with more listens. I'm quite surprised myself given my own tepid response to it initially.

Was a good gig although it felt they were slightly going through the motions and Jason Lytle has a gripe with venue for some reason.

good article that...and a cracking list of albums....although they appear to have used Britpop as a catch-all phrase

To be fair, I think North America it was a catch-all for any guitar-based bands that came from Britain around that time. The fact they even say Radiohead weren't a Britpop band, but include The Bends in their list says it all really.

Mastodon`s new album is out. The band I rate the highest in the world the last 10 years. One of the best metal bands of all time( Edit: One of the best bands of all time. Period). The album is obviously awesome.
Will probably not get the hype of the oh so average Thee Oh Sees of this world though.

Mastodon are geniuses and show Godlike talent that other bands just don`t have.

Not a bad list. Stretching the definitions a bit though.

'Different Class' probably a worthy winner. Good to see SFA getting some love. For my money Cornershop's 'When I Was Born For The 7th Time' should be far higher than 15. It's fantastic, it has everything. It's like the Brit-Asian 'Odelay', in a diversity-of-pallette-and-use-of-sampling way, though I far prefer it all these years later.

Hit single (albeit Norman Cook's remake), check, Beatles cover, check, a sense of humour, check, a (much more subtle) nod to T-Rex, check (they saved the more overt T-Rexstacy for the also-excellent follow-up, 'Handcream For A Generation') great melodies, check, occasional driving Hammond organ, check, drug references, check, street sounds of Britain today, check. Also loads of 'distinctly not Britpop' stuff on there too though like Allen Ginsberg and some monster drum grooves. It's a brilliant piece of work.

Saw them a few weeks ago, well worth a watch if you get the chance. As you say, more raucous. The frontman is excellent, very charismatic, and the band are dynamite.

They are playing the Paradiso in a couple of weeks time (The Homesick supporting who are a boss Dutch band) so I'll be going to that.

Fat White Family are fucking great live and I've seen some people saying that these could actually be better. Lias is a fantastic front man. He's pretty quiet off stage but seems to be possessed by the spirit of Iggy as soon as he gets up there.

The track he's put out already is incredible. Smoothing out all his angles and tightening himself up, sounds like it's going to be a really ambitious album - people might finally go nuts for him I reckon. Really overdue.

The Gnod album is really special, second track is seriously groovy. Seen a bit of love for it from Jooney - you get a chance to get stuck into that special edition yet?

Loads over the last month or so - enjoyed the Pontiak and Arboretum albums both on Thrill Jockey.

Mount Eerie album is a bit too much for me. Huge fan, glad he's getting the reviews. Know his stuff really well since the Microphones days and his wife's stuff too. The track Ravens is great but the rest of it is too uncomfortable to listen to, claustrophobic in the grief stakes. Seen Benji referenced in relation to it a lot but it doesn't have the mini bangers like Dogs or Richard Ramirez to keep it moving.  Still excellent like but just made me feel really unhappy.

Quite like the Real Estate, whoever recommended Idles, thanks.  Even if his voice from time to time veers towards Jake Bugg land, when he keeps it in the Mark E Smith/Hardcore Punk territory it's great.  Love that track Mother.

Oh and Alonso - ages ago (sorry) but cheers for the King Woman recommendation, took a while to get to it - really love it though, proper druggy doom, dig the vocals - just the weedy side of being mad cheesey.  Did you get into the Crystal Fairy album? And have you heard the Hey Colossus track - wonder is it a red herring or are they going to do a relatively indie rock album?

Still working through the last few pages.

Throwing Longpigs, The Sun Is Often Out (Richard Hawley's Guitar playing) and first Bluetones first album (Adam Devlin's Guitar playing - and Select Magazine's irrational hatred of them) out there for my Britpop albums bar the obvious. Compelling case made for Cornershop above, going to have a go again at it too.
