Really sad to see how crap the Netherlands are. Absolutely no creativity or pace in their play. Just 2 cloggers up front and Daley Blind launching long diagonals.

Wouldn't surprise me if Netherlands fail to qualify, very poor team, Sweden in the group & Netherlands have already drawn 1-1 at home against Sweden.

Is it just me or is that Dutch team a really sad sight? When I was growing up they had the likes of Gullit, van Basten and Rijkaard. Later it was Kluivert, Overmars, van Bronckhorst , Bergkamp, de Boer. And then they had the likes of Robben, van der Vaart, Huntelaar and van Persie.

aside from not having any world class players they look so disjointed. transition between defense, midfield and attack is so slow and aimless.

A surprisingly good day for Sweden, 3-0 against Bulgaria... yeah but still. And win against Croatia with 4-2 in the u-21 Euro qualification, leading that group ahead of Spain. Who would have thought.

Italy are going through something very similar at the moment talent wise. These things are cyclical, only a matter of time before they start producing top talent again.

I know the Netherlands isn't a massive country and it's inevitable the stream of talent will dry up at some point but something must've gone seriously wrong in Dutch academies for this lot to be the best they can muster. They're just so mediocre, it's painful to watch them.

Dutch in my mind were always this classy, sophisticated side with oodles of flair and creativity, only ever let down by their readiness to engage in in-fighting. Now its like watching Blackpool.

Italy have got some good youngsters coming through though. Players that are just starting to break through into their respective first teams. Can the same be said for the Dutch?

I remember Germany in 98 WC had an entire team average age of mid 30s and playing dreadful football, it looked horrible for them at the time but they reformed their academy system and soon enough there was a wave of incredibly talented young players.

Dutch have too much footballing knowledge and tradition for this to last too long, considering with how much thought and intelligence they approach football and youth development I`m sure this is just a calm before the storm as they just have too much resources and know how to let this awkward phase continue.

Agreed Rugani, Romagnoli, Belotti, Berardi and Donnarumma are all excellent young players.

I think it stems from that U21 group of players they had around nine years ago or so not really pushing on and realising their potential. You know the one with Babel and Drenthe in, absolutely none of that talented side really pushed on and they'd now be in and around their peak years. As a result the current side is made up of a lot of youth, that as well as lacking in experience, is also quite clearly lacking quality. Then you add in that they've just lost, or are losing the generation of the likes of Van Persie, Robben, Dirk, Sneijder and Van Der Vaart and the lack of a generation after that really begins to tell.

They could be in the doldrums for the next decade.

If I remember correctly, they lost home to Portugal 1-0 in the final game of the 86 qualifiers. However, they had already qualified. The result sent out Sweden who would have qualified if the (West) Germans had taken at least a point.
