Every game from him lately seems to be a step up and today he was basically prime Matip.

Fucking cruel that goal.

After a day like that I just knew something like that incident would decide the game, nothing bad to say against any of our defenders today. Ali, Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk and Robbo everyone of them was very good. Wipe yourself down Joel, it's going to be a journey this season.

Feel bad for him.  No-one in the team deserved that result.  Everyone, including Joel, was just heroic to the end.

Needs to start on Thursday, important we get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.  What happened was gut-wrenching as he was absolutely immense.

With the advantage they had, with shot after shot into our area, it was always going to bounce in at some stage. Did so in a cruellest possible manner.

It's insane so many were writing him off after a bad season with our midfield in the shape it was. Literally just the season before he was getting praised to high heaven as better than Van Dijk!

Think he will be massive for us

Sadly, it’s far from “insane”. The Transfer thread in particular was poisonous over the summer - and Matip was far from alone in being written off. I could go on, but there’s little point.

I was worried that we would see a performance drop off from Joel this season, but thankfully it looks like we’re going to get at least another season of quality performances from him. Never ceases to amaze me how quality a free signing this guy has been.

Nicked from Jason...

Matip booked for being fouled (Tierney gives freekick against Matip somehow; then books Matip for reaction) - https://v.redd.it/zvs81zgmjxzb1

You see it with a few modern players where they play to the cameras or the fans with their reactions to refs but that was pure, unadulterated, classic Matip.

His runs forward are fantastic. Of course he's been making these runs for years but it really does give us another passing option and I don't see many teams tracking his runs.
