Important to keep some hispanohablantes at the club...

Absolutely. Probably also a good idea to have a few Spanish-speakers as well ;)

Very odd decision by the club.

Think that's impossible to judge without knowing the terms we'll be offering. For all we know we could be reducing his wages significantly, offering a one-year deal and a pathway into coaching. That certainly wouldn't be odd.

There is no doubt Jurgen thinks Milner work ethics are well worth keeping around as the lad is still fitter than 99% of his fellow pros. Imagine coming in after a few weeks off and getting your ass lapped by a man 15 years older than you. James also has shown you got to be versatile and roll with the punches as he has adapted with every year that has gone by. Started life as a winger, could play in the center in any position and even fill in as the full back on either side if pushed. Even now as fellow pros like Rooney look like he is 56 instead of 36 tuck into his pancakes, Milner is probably in the gym / on the field practicing when everyone else is packing to go home. That's the sort of drive you want around the younger lads and surely makes them want to work even harder to keep succeeding.

It's not that strange thinking player's wages as they get older can shift down, their negotiating position isn't great as not likely they can argue (to take Bobby as an example) there is a team willing to match or better his current £180k a week even if he did move on a free.

Sure but I think its a lot, lot rarer than people think.

With someone like Milner maybe I could see him accepting a lower wage with the plan to phase him into the coaching set-up (we're not going to pay a coach £140k a week) but the ones like Bobby, Hendo, Sadio etc we're not going to drop their wages when this next contract generally is when most players get the highest wages. I also don't think we're actually as strict/ruthless as people think. We extended Lallana purely so he could stick around for us winning the league, we've extended Adrian when it seemed pretty obvious he'd be unlikely to get a game, we've kept Karius around when its very obvious he's not going to get a game and we could have terminated his deal.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Milner has multiple years left in him, the problem is he doesnt have multiple years at elite high level left in him. I dont have an issue giving him an extension solely for the value he clearly offers in the dressing room and behind the scenes. But Id assume we would be offering a deal at a reduced rate to be honest and he may feel he can get game time at a PL club starting and getting paid more

We will be interesting to see what happens

He said:

“There are talks but, how always, we usually don’t comment further on that. There’s no reason for it. But yes, of course – I am in talks, the club is in talks with Millie, we will see.”

It was a bit vague, not anything specifically about a contract being on the table.

I expect him to leave, if he wants to play more minutes then surely he has too, as he shouldn’t really be starting a lot of games here now let alone next season.

Here's to 800 more

And I will play 800 games, and I will play 800 more!

More sensibly, I really hope he stays in some capacity. It's great for a young lad like Elliot to see a guy who made his debut at 16 still plying his trade at 36. I get that he might want to play more and still feel he has something to offer the right team, but I'll be fucking gutted when he goes. He's the ultimate professional, and I'm so very glad we have him.

Spot on.

The example he sets for the young lads is vital in bringing them through.
I'm sure Klopp and the club will want to keep him in a reduced role but it really depends on how he see's his future, move elsewhere to continue playing (understandable) or start to integrate in to a playing/coaching role.

I am sure this is something he has prepared for mentally.

Its very similar to the McAllister situation a few years back and Milner has to and will make the right decision for himself but I hope he stays with us.

I wouldn't be surprised if we were interested in offering him a place on the staff especially now he is doing his badges. If he wants to play he will probably have to move, but maybe they are planning for his future after he gives up playing. He seems to have a good relationship with the academy staff and he took a big interest when we were playing a lot of those boys.

I think this summer feels like the right time for him to go if he wants to keep playing regularly. Would hope he will stay at the club in some capacity, but if he wants to play 30 plus games a season at a decent level then he will go.

Also got to remember his wage will be massive for a player who rarely plays, so renewing it may be tricky for us given I assume we would expect him to take a big hit on his new deal.

Milner becomes the first player in history to create a sport, sign off the founding rules of the game, galvanise an entire nation in to regarding it as their national sport, seamlessly manage its transition to professional status and then pick up a league cup trophy (his second) 150 years later, after a decent penalty. Top career.

It boils Blueloons piss Milner left them and picked up trophies especially the CL.

What a signing he's been, played at a high level in multiple positions and one of the leaders in the dressing room.
