Love the guy, but the fact that he was the worst player on the pitch by some distance, and still played 95 minutes, is baffling.
What I don't get is, earlier in the season when he was mostly a substitute, there were games where the inverted fullback just wasn't working. We'd have Trent, Dom and Salah all stepping on each others toes and no one exploiting the space. Then Joe comes in, keeps it really simple, stretches play and causes problems.
Yet somehow, we've decided to fuck that off and turn him into an inverted fullback when he's utterly incapable of doing so. He can't switch play, can't shoot, can't thread passes, has poor awareness and his brain seems to melt when given complicated instructions.
It feels like we've inverted him just to see if we can, rather than out of any logic or pragmatism.
