Eugene "Gene" Allan Hackman
« on: May 8, 2014, 07:29:02 pm »

Fine, fine actor. A fine thoroughbred of American acting.

I plan on having a Hackathon sometime soon, a good range of his roles from Superman to The Conversation methinks.

 Favourite films? Roles?

Retired now unfortunately, but reports suggest he became terribly bitter actor near the end of his career, difficult and troublesome.

Anyhow, I for one hope he comes out of retirement, but then, I'm still holding out for Sean Connery to come out of retirement.

Superman I & II
Mississippi Burning
Unforgiven
Enemy of the State (was fun)
Runaway Jury was pretty interesting although I had read the book already.

Fuck it, no-one will notice. ;)

I watched The Royal Tenebaums the other day and I was stuck thinking about how good he was in it. Whilst he's a massive 'Method man', you can't help but feel that he didn't get his due rewards in his career. He got some good noms and nods like, but his filmography is wide and vast.

The Royal Tenenbaums. Probably my favourite Wes Anderson film and Hackman is the star of that.

Edit: See you've beaten me to it. Love that film.

Well, personally I think The Conversation is THE great American film, perfectly directed and Hackman's performance is stunning.  He's never bettered it and when you look at his body of work, it just shows what a brilliant actor he is.

The Conversation is obviously based on Antonioni's Blow Up, but it improves on that film in every way, and this is from a huge fan of Antonioni.  I think it's perfect, it has one of the most haunting endings ever put on film, and a lot of that is down to Hackman.

I found his performance in Crimson Tide brilliantly and annoyingly stubborn, which at times bordered on out and out racism.

Washington's performance was a foil for Hackman and vice-versa. A good film made great by two great acting performances. In my humble opinion of course.

There was something that I didn't like when I watched TRT and it was Royal's history.

The narrator says that he was a prominent litigator, he'd managed to live in a hotel for 10 years (Is that right?), but he didn't know that you could marry your adopted sister?

Thought that was a little daft really.

He used to share a flat with the Hoff!

He did. I saw Dustin Hoffman on the 'Actors Studio' and he was reminiscing about his flat sharing days with the great Hackman and how they remained the best of friends throughout their careers. Never got to feature in anything alongside each other (despite much trying) until 'The Runaway Jury'.

Outstanding actor Gene Hackman. Always brings a 'presence' to the screen no matter how small the role might be. He'll always be Popeye Doyle to me but love that scene in 'Young Frankenstein' - favourite Mel Brooks films that's a thread waiting to happen.

The man has always looked 70. Incredible. 'The French Connection' and 'Unforgiven', obviously. But class in 'The Royal Tenenbaums' as well and, often overlooked, 'The Conversation' (as pointed out, probably the quintessential Hackman-film).
