Well that last one was some of the most intense television I've ever seen.  Haven't been that tense since Walter White found out Skyler gave his money away.

It wasn't as tense for me and I will tell you why, we already know that it ended fine for them, or at least that they didn't get killed since they are recounting what happened during the investigation. But still, that was some great television. McConaughey is on a different level these last couple of years.

true, but we haven't seen them stand up yet in the future (i don't think, anyway... and the camera angle on cohle is always the same too?) so some other nasty effects could have been caused.  might be wrong on all that, of course.

oh.  i don't think i saw that.  i sit corrected. although if it's next episode it doesn't remove the element of risk from the long shot in the current episode :)

If Tarantno had done a scene like the last few minutes, critics would be wanking over it, and people would be talking about it for years.

To be fair - I've noticed a lot of praise/buzz for the show since the fourth episode. Articles like this are surfacing now.

Ironically, most of the folks on Tumblr going bonkers over that scene are female fans of the Percy Jackson films, speculating as to whether Logan Lerman has seen them in the flesh, so to speak. Silliness  :D

It was still tense for me, even with that knowledge.  The flow of the scene made me forget the facts!

Yeah, I think the director is on record saying that the best scene is where you don't even realise it's just one take. That scene was utterly brilliant and made me forget that we already know Ruste would be making through it alive and that it was all shot in one take.

The tension was all still there for me.

I don't remember what scene that line is from, but given Rust's disdain for religion, I would imagine it has something to do with the fact that the individual is the master of his own destiny - or even more simply, there is no God to bear witness to. It has something to do with his atheism, surely.

It was from that long conversation in the car scene where Rust expounds on his pessimism and antinatalism, and Marty asks him why he hasn't killed himself yet. Bit of an ambiguous answer from him. I doubt if it could apply to the religion thing though, because he doesn't go off on one about religion until they attend the preacher's mass.

Reminds me of something George Carlin once said... "I'm divorced from it now (the goings on of life in the US) - I see it from a distance. I gave myself a divorce. I say to myself... George, emotionally, you have no stake in this, you don't care one way or another, so watch it, have fun."

I kinda butchered the quote a bit there but I just took it as meaning that he's just simply going to be an observer of things in his life-time since he "lacks the constitution" for the alternative. Even though he disapproves (well, at least this is what he claims) of the human race and whatnot, he's going to stick around for the ride and watch it all like he's... "got a ticket to the freak-show." (another Carlin quote)

Just watched all of these back to back - what a great show.

The imagery is probably the most striking thing for me; the painting on the church wall was properly eerie. The acting, as has been mentioned is absolutely terrific. And I can't remember a TV show that's been so consistently well shot and directed.

Episode 4 is the weakest of them all though. Despite that incredible final scene, the stuff before that is really heavy handed and uncalled for. The moment when Ginger says 'if you help us with this, then...' was properly clunky. I immediately thought of GTA.

Still - what a marvelous show - if it carries on like this then it'll go down as an all timer.
You change all the lead, sleeping in my head, as the day grows dim, I hear you sing a golden hymn.

I love the imagery too. There's already a bleak, "envirogothic" theme to it, and then you realise that everything they're doing, finding, building, taking apart, walking upon and running from is all going to be washed away by Hurricane Katrina ten years later anyway.

Bleak and hopeless, just how I like it ;D

Noticed that, also see "Bowtie"{Brother Musaun} and the "bowlegged mutherfucker" Lester Freeman got a role in this, been quite a few actors from the Wire who have gone on to other shows for HBO just shows how good that show and the actors where.

Well we know Cohle didn't do it now.

I wonder if the two interviewing detectives are actually involved in some way.

Whatever happened, it's sure very strange that Cohle would have spent 10 years investigating this case without finishing it off.

It seems most likely that it's just going to be some sort of criminal conspiracy that goes to the Governor's office. That would be disappointing for how obvious it is, after everything that's happened.

I'm guessing that Rev. Tuttle is involved.  He's the one who wanted the task force that Rust thinks are involved and the school was part of his foundation

The show has a great ability to create tension in the flashbacks despite knowing that the main characters are telling them. Gutted their are only 3 episodes left.

Brilliant show.

Got a real Twin Peaks vibe to it in terms of how the story is developing.
