Great OP.  I've been noticing all these little things as well.  It's what's made me take a quick liking to him.  His calmness to settle things down against the mancs, when everyone else was in a bit of a panic, stood out for me.  Very smart player.

Only just seen this thread somehow. Great work Roy, really interesting stuff. :) I like the look of this lad a lot.

Now you're saying there's actually a point to the pointing after all.

Haha! I think you're right - if you're pointing while you're on the ball because you claim to have no options, that's something else isn't it?

This is a bit like our first win away at Stamford Bridge under Rafa - in the first minute, Gerrard pointed at the space in front of Mikel as if to say to Robbie Keane "it's your job to stay on him". It's one thing doing that when you're in your late 20s and the club captain...

I did notice,as did many, that Alberto is a thinking player.Typical of the type that Rodgers would buy. But that doesn't guarantee he will be a success here.

He will need to be able to show he can back up his intelligent play with real decisive action that can really hurt tems not just aggravate them.

I'm liking what I see, and many thanks to RoyHendo for posting his analysis, but it's very early days and Alberto might not get enough game time to show his ability.

Bloody 'ell Roy. I spent too much time on here, not to put too fine a point on it,  pointing out Jay Spearing's pointing. Now you're saying there's actually a point to the pointing after all.

Of course this lad's exciting. Better name than Jay's, true. But bigger brain and better skills too I think. So three points to you.

I remember that. Them were the days. Spending days pointing out (*edit what a pun!) all the times where Spearing was guilty of pointing and shouting at his team mates instead of just doing it himself. I do like Alberto though. There's a lot of smart movement about him.

Excellent read, one question is young Mr Alberto your long lost love child ?   ;D

I think Roy is more like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty and Luis is the young neighbour inspiring him to buff up. Good stuff though! That pass to Defelou looks sublime.

I think Aristotle that what we decided was odd about Jay was that he was constantly pointing out passes (though never making himself available) to teammates who were on the ball and yet when he had it himself he was clueless about what to do with it - which he showed by doing that other irritating gesture of holding his palms out as if to say 'why is no one helping me'?

I suspect Roy's right. The new lad is cut from different cloth.

PS Bolton are doing well though.

Yeah that was the thing taht really got to me. It wasn't so much the pointing it was that it wasn't needed at all. I'm sure Lucas knows where to find you if he needs you. Alberto is doing all his pointing out of possession, it's organising, not pointing out the obvious to those who already know. I do very much rate Alberto. I can't really point out why. It's like a skinny Le Tissier. No reason it should work, but it's a joy to behold

Too late to catch the pictures as too many views means they are turned off (is there an unlimited free alternative to photobucket?) but a great read. Thing is, how many players do we have to get excited about? More than any other British team I suspect. Such a great squad to develop, and we have the right man in the coaching post to see this come to fruition. Our late teens/ early 20's signings and academicians can be far more exciting than a good many other teams marquee spends.

read it this morning. came back to read it again just for the "meep meep". fucking hilarious, but i am easily amused sometimes.

in fairness to roy i never picked any of the things he saw. im glad roy broke it down into simple words and included pictures to reinforce it for me.

im impressed that luis expects a certain high level of intelligence from the players around him. love the pointing and the "wtf" from luis when someone fucks up an obvious thing. but still, the "meep meep" totally wins it for me.

Yeah but they load just fine if you click on each individually. Pain in the arse that way but worth it to get a visual cue for what Roy is saying.

EDIT: Oh and outstanding OP Roy. Was talking briefly to BreakfastPercy about Alberto looking like a clever player in preseason. I have no idea what his position will end up being. A lot of what I see in him reminds me of when I first saw Juan Carlos Valerón play. If he turns out like the Depor legend then he will be one hell of a player.

EEEHH!!!!

Whats all this talk about technicians, clever players and intelligence??

It's a MAN's game ffs!!!

Here is my opinion!

Alberto? BAH too skinny to make it here.

What we need it blood and guts! 100 miles per hour! no pulling out off two footed flying tackles! Flying elbows gets the job done. No fancy schamcy shite!!! ;D

Anyways great read Roy!!

already an upgrade on Jonjo if the reason he was bought was to replace him.  Still early days though, he style looks languid but is quite a speedy and aggresive player when it comes to the tackles as seen in his brief cameo in man u game. Not sure what's his position is so far. He was playing quite deep in preseason and was pressuring high up the pitch in the Man u game.

A lot of what I see in him reminds me of when I first saw Juan Carlos Valerón play. If he turns out like the Depor legend then he will be one hell of a player.

That's a great shout - can definitely see what you mean by this - the grace and elegance without necessarily the pace - but the vision is most definitely there - I really like the way he just stands with his foot on the balls - and is like - are you guys gonna make a run ....? Very JCV like!

And the constant head up running!!!!!!!!!!! (I have to say I was more excited about this boy than any of our other signings - even though I'm fully aware he won't make as significant an impact as some of the others - especially in the short term)

I know people slated him for his performance in the notts co but even in that game he played some lovely passes - especially later on in the game.. Was always looking for the straight ball for the diagonal run inside the full back... Delich!!!  :lickin

Additionally, the pointing and closing space is a very interesting point - i have a theory that players who have the natural ability to read the play do so by being able to read cues to interpret how the play is going to evolve - usually people associate this with only the offensive side of the game. In the way we all comment on great vision because a player is able to identify a gap and thread a ball through the eye of a needle (See coutinho for further details  ;))

But as Roy has expertly demonstrated above, this ability of players deemed to have 'vision' also results in them being very good at closing options/nicking the ball - i think this collection of 'intelligent' footballers makes playing a high press game much more viable - this almost inherent ability to be able to read the play gives them an advantage on closing down opposition because they can position themselves in places where the opposition player will turn into and/or play the ball into.. Potentially, what some of the coaches would refer to as controlling space to initiate a transition.

I personally believe that Barca's high press game is inextricably linked to having a set of very intelligent forwards who all individually have this 'game intelligence' - the number of times players like Messi and inniesta nick a ball from a player by putting their body where the player is going to turn is uncanny. I believe this is because they are aware that is the only option for that opposition player - this is because their 'game intelligence' allows them to process that information quicker than the opposition player in possession is able to..

We seem to be collecting a number of these player and long may it continue... But heck what do I know - I still believe Suso is the new Isco....   :P

Ps: thoroughly recommend the brilliant OP by Prof on 'the system is king' thread - it outlines the underlying theory on why Luis Alberto is gonna win the Ballan d'Or   ;D

Not highlighting the specific things about Alberto that Roy has.

These are traits of a particular profile of footballer, and one that people in this country have not universally appreciated.  Like a lot of people have said, they are things that go unnoticed.
