Carragher's use of the ball was stellar, but he didn't have a lot to do defensively, that's not knocking Carragher, before I'm accused of doing so, that's simply the way the game panned out. Downing had more to do, going back the way.

Coates doesn't appear to be particularly mobile. Carragher needs a zimmerframe. Not ideal if either has to play.

Coates is incredibly mobile, Maybe not to Skrtel standards but his turn of pace is quite quick and he can throw the blocks in for fun. I'd have him over Carra any day. We dont want it to get embarrasing at the back.

Maybe it would be because Carragher played better in the game than him (and a couple of ones before that), even ignoring that one flick.

Apart from the other night Coates has played well whenever called upon this season. If he'd been played more (Hearts, Anzhi at home) then he'd be less rusty and more experienced and ready when he does play.

Coates (and Carra tbf) was one of the few to come out of Swansea with any credit. He was probably our best player over the 90 minutes.

If Rodgers discarded everyone who had a bad game for the next match then everyone would have been dropped this season.

I have always advocated playing Coates instead of Carra, but Carra was better than him on thursday, and Chelsea don't have much of an areal threat in attack, that will really benefit Coates.

I suppose BR is going with Carra's experience in big games.

However, Wisdom over Coates is a strange one

So oe performance puts Carra above Coates then. What about the countless goals Carra has cost us game after game over the last 12 months. Coates has been superb everytime he has played bar the odd mistake which is understandable for a 21 year old.

Coates is superior to Carra in absolutely every way shape and form bar 'communication'

I thought Carra was better than Coates in the Swansea game to be honest, but yes Coates did have a good game.

I'm just saying it would be silly to suggest (and I think you know it) that Carra has suddenly moved ahead of him because of that one goal, when for the most part he's been really solid in the last few games. On form, there isn't much difference between the two.

People might say what's the point in playing Carra over Coates because of the future and all that... Well, Rodgers has to try and win the game tomorrow. If Carra plays over Coates, it will be because Rodgers thinks that will give us a better chance of getting a result. Just like when Coates played over Carra in the City game.

I imagine Wisdom would be playing because he'd be able to attack the ball more and adds a bit of athleticism to the defence.

We'll just have to see how the game goes. If it works, like Feb 2011, then brilliant. I'd say if we have gone from a back 4 to a back 5 because of Skrtel's absence, then it isn't exactly a ringing endorsement either of Carragher, or the other centre half options, and very much make do and mend. Coates and Carragher are capable of covering for Skrtel and partnering Agger.

Carragher is still capable of producing good performances, purely through his sheer commitment and ability to read situations, but he also has a lot of mistakes in him and Chelsea have got a hell of a lot of attacking quality. Look what they did to Gallas the other week (ageing defender who's not the defender he was). Hopefully he's still got a good 90 minute in him after Thursday and it works out okay if he plays.

5 at the back was always going to happen, most of their play goes through the middle, much like Anzhi. Mirallas tore Wisdom a new one so imagine what Hazard, Oscar, Mata will do to him. I'm worried about tomorrow now, purely because Wisdom is playing. Maybe Skrtel can make a recovery, I pray he can.

I always used the Slug and Lettuce, out of the tube turn right, 100yds right again, 200 yds down the road.

I must be honest though, last time I used it was the Champions League semi in 2005. So it may well be something else now.

13mins - Bournemouth have gone home. Utd kicked off anyway. Still 0-0 as Smalling passes it back to De Gea.

It's typical, we get Johnson back and that's negated by losing Skrtel.

Loads of negativity on here.

I'm fairly positive about the supposed team that was posted if it means that (hopefully) Gerrard will be playing a more attacking role. I think this might be the day it all finally clicks. It's only a matter of time the way we're playing.

Also, if this guy gets the team right again, I'm hoping it's a BIG coincidence. I don't like the idea that the team news is being leaked like that.

Liverpool's shot conversion rate is 33% in this year's Europa League; yet only 9% in the Premier League this season. Continental.

Carra vs Coates if the rumoured team is true isnt my main question mark over the team.
Im much more interested in Wisdom over Coates at CB. Yes Wisdom has been great since coming in but surely he should be number 5(6 if counting a fit Kelly) for the CB slot and 1st for the RB place until Kelly comes back or one of our LB gets his shit together and allows Johnson to move back to his natural position.
If Wisdom is going to be playing ahead of Coates at CB I think its pretty clear he doesnt have much of a future under Rodgers which is a real shame since I really rate him. Yeah he cost us a goal a Anzhi but perhaps to be expected that a young non match fit player makes a odd mistake.
But he has been class most of the time he has gotten a chance.

Im strangely optimistic for this game. Much more so then If we where playing Southampton or something.

I think Wisdom is really suited for the right sided centre back position in a back three, as he is a centre back and is used to playing on the right lately.

That's probably why he is given the nod.  Coates lacks mobility, as does Carragher - which is probably why both aren't playing.  One of them can be central and then you have Agger and Wisdom left and right of him.

Is Skrtel really out?

If we were going 3-5-2 then I hoped Coates would have started ahead of Carragher as Chelsea's lineup of Oscar-Hazard-Mata have the potential to really hurt us & exploit Carragher's age.

Can't see both Wisdom and Carra ahead of Coates if Skrtel is out. Think that lineup is bollocks. That fella himself said that the info for the Chelsea game would b unreliable.

Quite nervous about the match - sometimes having the feeling that we are gonna get badly tonked.

3 at the back sounds a nice idea - keep it tight at the back and hit on the counter. Fingers crossed.

We did indeed, however as Gerrard wasn't playing that game I'm not sure why you said that  ;) Unless you're just saying it hasn't been a year since we had a pen in the league. Annoying that our best pen-taker wasn't on the pitch during any of them nonetheless.

I'm glad it looks like we'll set up to counter though. I think that probably suits us more than anything else atmo. Assaidi and Shelvey probably suit a counter-attacking team coming off the bench as well.
