All i want to see is Agger on the team sheet and scoring 6 goals with each one celebrated by punching the reporters the in the face with his YNWA tattoo.

There is optimisim and excitement in the air although most supporters would want to keep a lid on it. Rodgers is still very much unproven in a top club and the jury is still out. However, most of us are quietly confident he can turn things around with his footballing philosophy he is trying to instill at the club. It will take some time but let's hope we can start with a bang and 3 points!!!

As the OP says

Reina, Enrique, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Allen, Gerrard, Downing, Suarez, Borini.

So from the other perspective, assuming we have a full strength line up out unless we make more signings, then the following are available for selection for a place on the bench for our first game...

Doni, Jones, Carragher, Coates, Kelly, Flanagan, Robinson, Adam, Henderson, Shelvey, J Cole, Spearing, Sterling, Carroll.

I might be missing a couple, but while the first team is clearly strong as it is, there will be injuries during any season and I would agree with Rodgers that we could do with a couple of additions to those players who are that bit better and on the fringes of competiting for a first team place, which is currently IMO, Henderson, Shelvey, Sterling and Carroll if he stays as the rest of the list are either a little too inexperienced or perhaps a little past their best?

Without wanting to turn it into a transfer thread, when you look at the players available in terms of our bench, I personally can see exactly why we might benefit from that bit of extra quality in the final 3rd which could be called upon to change a game- and we simply cannot be turning our noses up at a player of Dempsey's standard if we can get him in for the right price- I think we still need a couple of game changers for the bench, as looking at that list, we're relying on Cole, Sterling, Carroll and at a push Shelvey further up the pitch, to change a game or offer us a different strategy. With Sterling being very very young, and Cole perhaps a little out of his depth at this level (despite a good season at Lille?).

We look very light up front as well, are we not purchasing another striker?

Starting line up could be more difficult to predicy if Mr Rodgers gets one or two new players in

I think we will be ahead of West Brom in terms of fitness as we've had competetive football already in the EL. Long range shooting could prove to be the difference in this one as both teams will be nervy. We've already banged two long range goals (Downing and GJ)...

They do have an advantage in that Steve Clarke will have inside knowledge on our players so playing Borini, Allen and any other new signing could be wise

Has Allen even trained with the squad yet? I'm somewhat doubtful that we will see him start, but then again, I guess BR's been telling Shelvey to play in a similar way to how he would tell Allen to... So perhaps he can slot right in

Think this will be a tough game. We should know better than most that Steve Clarke's teams are, at the very least, very solid defensively. The difficulty of the next few games also dictates that we almost need the win here, to boost confidence, and to ensure we don't fall behind in points so early in the season. Think we'll see the same starting 11 from the Gomel game, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Sterling and Allen make an appearance as well.

If Allen doesn't play then I'd personally like to see Henderson take that role. Nothing against Shelvey but I think he's still quite raw so I'd go with someone more dependable. Besides that the team pretty much writes itself.

Can't see why Allen wouldn't start really. The whole of last season he played under Rodgers. He also played in the olympics which can be seen as luxury pre-season games.

Don't think there's a need to blend in with the squad, he knows the system and he know's Rodgers. Besides, didn't Suarez come in and score on his debut without having even trained with the squad?  :)

Still, wouldn't mind seeing Shelvey or Henderson there as they might not get too many chances to start a Premier League game this season.

Reckon it will be:

Reina
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
Lucas Shelvey
Downing Gerrard Borini
Suarez

Subs: Jones, Carroll, Allen, Henderson, Sterling, Kelly, Carragher

vs

Foster
Reid McAuley Olssen Ridgewell
Morrison Yacob Mulumbu Brunt
Odemwingie  Lukaku

Subs: Daniels,  Long, Rosenberg,  Thomas, Sharner, ??, ??

They've got really good strikers but a lack of pace out wide, in fact no genuine wide players though Morrison is probably there best player and Brunt obviously has great delivery. Think will do well pressing up on them as I don't see Brunt doing well without space and neither winger has the pace to get in behind the defence and cause trouble.

Hard to work out exactly how they will start with this being Clarkes first game, Rosenberg coming off injury and Lukaku has only just arriving but I reckon it will be the 4-2-2. I've gone with Lukaku but it could be either of Rosenberg (if fit) or Long (Better defensively).

Midfield passing is much improve with Yacob deep lying playmaker now starting over Sharner. It's pretty safe to say I've got the right back 4 plus keeper right, they pick themselves.   I reckon it's an improved team on last year and with an expereinced defense and Clarke they'll be tough to break down. Hope Clarke goes well, just not against us.

We should be beating them with the players we have available and coming off a good preseason. We've got next to no injuries at the moment (think Cole is the only one in doubt).

However, if I had my 'druthers, I'd love to see Lucas score a hat-trick and then run over to Hodgson after the third goal and lift his shirt to reveal "£4 million??  Honestly, you were going to sell me for £4 million you moron???" on his undershirt.

Hardly a certainty. This is his first week with the team, and Shelvey's featured and impressed in most of the games we've played so far. Think Shelvey and Henderson are both likelier candidates for a spot in the 11 this weekend.

Had Allen been able to play a part in the friendly on Sunday, then he would have a better chance.

Hardly a certainty. This is his first week with the team, and Shelvey's featured and impressed in most of the games we've played so far.

Enrique played in the first-team a day after joining the club last year, and he slotted in perfectly straight off the mark. A week is enough time, and Rodgers will want his big signing - also a young lad whom he trusted in nearly every Premiership game last year - to play.

                 Reina
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
                 Lucas
          Gerrard Allen
    Downing Suarez Borini

Unless any drastic changes happen to our first-team this week, I fully expect that to be the starting lineup against West Brom.

Middlesborough - 2008/2009.
that was the first home game that season

first actual game was sunderland away, we won that 1-0

thats the last time we kicked off with a win. been pretty pure starters the last 10 years which wasnt like us at all.

won only 2 times on first day since 2002 (07 and 08)

now contrast that to 1992-2002 we win in 93, 94, 95, 98, 99, 00, 01 and 02

Bit ignorant. Fortunately, Allen has played for Rodgers before, has been at the olympics/will play an international game so I wouldn't be surprised if he does. However, Shelvey should/could be rewarded for his displays so far under Rodgers.

Im sure Brendan wants to up our away performances from last year as neither Swansea/us did much on our travels. Keep it tight in the back and attack is the best form of defense so like to see anthying like this

         Reina
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
     Allen Lucas
Downing  SG   Borini
...........Suarez

I hestitated when penciling in Downing and honestly we are weak on the wings / width due to bellamy, Kuyt & Maxi leaving. Brendan want to get options in asap as if Downing continues as is from last season and either Borini or Suarez gets injured we are ???
