Here's a video of the current state of the pitch. Game should be postponed but, then again, it's CONMEBOL - I'll be surprised if that happens.

Inspection in 45mins apparently, 3 options, starts, called off or starts an hour or two later so the pitch can drain.

I think it’s because football reached South America so early, you find Victorian terms like Juniors, Old Boys or Corinthians across the continent.  We’ve just forgotten what connotations they had at the time.

So to answer your question, I don’t know.  They do love a ‘Junior’ in Brazil though, I met a few guys there who insisted on it as a nickname.

Here in Chile we have a couple of football clubs with English names, like Santiago Wanderers (oldest professional football team here, traditionally understood to have been founded in 1892) or Rangers de Talca, or... Everton. Even some teams that don't exist anymore, like Victoria Rangers, National or Mackay and Sutherland FC. That's because Football here was brought by English sailors and immigrants, and especially developed in Valparaíso, our main port town.

I'm intrigued that River Plate are called that (in English) and not Río de la Plata. Or even if they are digging the whole English language thing they could have gone for The River of Silver which is a little more poetic.

My Great grandfather was there for years (1921-26 ish) - one of those fellas that left home and turned up 5 years later. Kenny Jones his name was, little bandy-legged scouser covered in navy/sailor tattoos - I've never been to Chili but I'm sure I've got a few cousins over that way :D

PS and there was a really great Chilean restaurant called Valparaíso on Hardman Street in Liverpool - closed a couple of years ago though.

hehehe you'd be surprised by the amount of people over here with horribly butchered english-sounding names ;D Like, try to come up with many spelling variations of "Michael", "Byron" and "Jason" as you could probably think of and I'm 100% there's a poor sod with that name in this country ;D

As an aside - I have a friend with a very English name (Michael Bedwell) but he barely knew a couple of english words back when we first met. I'm sure he's gotten a lot better as time has passed. Great guy, though.

Yeah mate, he was one of those fellas, full of stories - and you were never quite sure what was real or not - but to me in the 70s, when I was a kid, they were all real - he was in the R.N during  Jutland so god knows what sort of PTSD he had - just fucked off to Chile - and that was not unusual at the time - every house down by my father's in L8 had a parrot or monkey and all kinds of artifacts from Africa, Asia, SA etc.

My Great-Grandad was the same. Ran away from home in 1919 aged 14 to join the merchant navy, and stayed in until 1945. He definitely went to Valparaiso on more then one occasion. Not sure he was the sailor-tattoos type though, the son of Scots and a big dour Proddy bloke from what I understand!

I remember. Never paid it much attention when it was open, but having spent some time in Chile since (Including Valparaiso) I wish it was still going.

The away goal rule is not used in the Finals. If the scores are level on aggregate at the end of the 2nd leg, it'll be 30 mins of extra time, if still level then it'll be penalties :)

The pitch looks in decent condition considering the rain and how it looked yesterday, see link - https://twitter.com/Libertadores/status/1061626137305116674

Boca Subs: Gago, Zarate, Tevez, Lampe, Goltz, Buffarini, Benedetto
River Subs: Lux, Fernandez, Mayada, Zuculini, Mora, Quintero, Alvarez

Boca's line-up looks to be a 4-3-3; River's looks like a 5-3-2 formation

The rescheduled first leg of the Copa Libertadores final between the Argentine giants has been given the green light.

CONMEBOL has confirmed the rescheduled Copa Libertadores final first leg between Boca Juniors and River Plate is to go ahead as planned on Sunday after an inspection determined La Bombonera's pitch to be in a suitable condition.
