that's because both teams essentially dropped the pretense that they were playing fair - earlier today CONMEBOL declared Independiente the winner of the first leg (making the "new" score 3-0) because of Santos fielding an ineligible player during that match*, so tensions were running "a bit high" before the match and it went downhill from there.

*: it's a controversial rule and it's become infamous lately - a number of teams have been recently penalized for "fielding ineligible players" ('cause they were registered for a different team earlier in the same competition, even if they never actually played... essentially, they're cup tied) and pressure is mounting on CONMEBOL for such a rule.

Reading the BBC article on it, turns out the ineligible player in question was banned after a sending off 3 years ago whilst playing for a different club, however Santos are claiming the ban wasn't on CONMEBOLs own website & thought it was ok to play him.

Went to Brazil for 2 weeks in July, grew up in Liverpool following the boys all over Europe but lived in Canada the last ten years. My misses is Brazilian so went for the first time, it was so intoxicating being in a place so in love with football! Went to Flamengo Sao Paulo at Maracana and watched Paysandu beat Guarani 1-0 in Serie B (My girl is from Belem).

Cant get off watching the Brazilian footy now, especially as its more convenient with my timezone

thanks Jason, hard to watch these late night games through to the end, and I'm in the right time-zone!

Desert Fox -Colo Colo look decent, are you a supporter? Good to see a team from Chile having a good run in the cup, and Rodd, your girl must be made up with our 3 Brasileiros, like you I've followed us all over but there is something about the South American fan culture, the songs, the passion that is great, although I can't make head nor tale of it at times, I spend most of my Portuguese class talking about footy in English :D

CONMEBOL do seem to have a few issues - like the FA, they'd probably be better run by those at grassroots than those actually doing the current highly paid jobs.

The ref in the Corinthians games was atrocious, players running up to each other kicking (both sides) and raking down the achilles - play on everyone! Players down and bleeding from the head - play on! Running past someone 10 yards away from the ref who is aggressively running towards you - you get a red card! It does make for very good entertainment though ;)

Very unpredictable football too - which is a welcome change :) The fans look like they're all having a great time too.

2 more games left in the Last 16...

Libertad vs Boca Juniors - tonight, 11.30pm ko UK time. Boca are 2-0 up from the 1st leg.

Palmeiras vs Cerro Porteno - early hours of tomorrow morning - 1.45am UK time. Palmeiras are 2-0 up from the 1st leg.

The Quarter-Finals are shaping up nicely, some great games on the cards... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Copa_Libertadores#Quarterfinals

nope, I fucking hate them ;D they're essentially the Chilean version of the mancs, so you can imagine my "joy" :P This is the team I support, but sadly we haven't been a top flight team for a couple of years, due to horrible board decisions throughout the last 10 or so years (which meant mediocre managerial appointments and even worse player recruitment). It's a fucking shame, but hey... when the love of your life is down, you can't walk away - you have to support though thick and thin :)

Boca River final would be mind blowing, especially in the last year before they change it to a crappy neutral venue final. Any Copa Lib tie I want to see is usually ruined by Brazilian clubs first though so still a long way to go before that game is reality! Gallardo has done an amazing job with River.

^ tasty final, I was just at La Bombonera for sightseeing and can only imagine what an occasion it would be on a big night like that. It's never happened before I think? Selfishly, I've got some connections at Boca so might be able to get a ticket so I'm hoping it happens. I'm in Porto Alegre and also wouldn't mind Gremio getting back to back finals.

^ Yes Rod, a little bit, Inter are playing now, I saw them earlier in the season - before the WC against Corinthians and you could see they have a bit of quality but I think even their fans didn't expect this. My wife's company get some corporate tickets for them and the demand has gone through the roof in her office as you can imagine, they are playing well. Gremio and Palmeiras  are still in the libertadores so that won't be easy. Massive game for them tomorrow, Sao Paulo v Palmeiras  and then on the 14th Palmeiras Gremio.

Good stuff. That Everton looks good for Gremio this season too.

Yeah its been great, Inter just lost last minute meaning if Flamengo can turn over Corinthians tonight and Palmeiras Sao Paulo draw at the weekend, I expect Gremio to beat Bahia you'll have two points separating the top 5.

^ aye massive win that against Sao Paulo, with 10 to go they have some daylight at the top.

Palmeiras        56
Internacional   53
Flamengo        52
São Paulo        52
Grêmio            51

Inter v SP and Palmeriras v Gremio next weekend and Flamengo v Fluminese at the Maracanã  (I always like this stat - The highest attendance for a derby Match  - 194,603 (177,656 paid), December 12, 1963 FLA-FLU Derby - Clássico das Multidões (Derby of the Masses) - a good weekend of footy since we don't have a game :D

Good stuff. That Everton looks good for Gremio this season too.

This fella is a must-sign for Klopp's Liverpool :)

Flamengo took care of Fluminense with ease. Need a Gremio and Sao Paulo win tomorrow now to crunch it to 3 points between the top 5

Also, how does everyone feel about the Copa Libertadores going to a neutral venue final from next year? Personally I hate two legged finals and love a neutral venue. Thinking about even going to Santiago for it if i can get tickets.
