A few of them were on Roger phillips last week , turned into a farce with Joe Anderson and Paul Rimmer geting very personal. Roger Phillips started it all by out of the blue saying he had received an email about the English democrats nomination and read it out live on air. I can't repeat what was said but you can still get it on Radio Merseyside's catch up service. I think it was on last Tuesday or Wednesday between 11-30 - 12-00.

The ECHO alerted police after several Wavertree residents living in three neighbouring streets told our reporter they did not support Mr Whitby even though he claimed they had.

If I was feeling unkind I might say they DID support his nomination but then shit one when they had a journalist knocking on their door to potentially expose their support to all and sundry.

Is it correct to say that nobody knows what the new mayor's powers will be?

I had a look on the council website and there is a very wooly couple of paragraphs about what a new Mayor would do:

Quote
The mayor will be responsible for leading the city, building investor confidence and directing new resources to economic priorities.

He or she will ensure a quicker and more effective response to local issues, ensure more targeted use of funding, and develop new financial mechanisms to encourage new private sector investment. They will be a powerful voice for the city, locally, nationally and internationally.

The mayor will be elected for a period of four years. He or she will appoint a Cabinet (also called the “Executive”) of two or more councillors.

How can we make an informed decision if we don't know what the mayor's powers will be?

That Whitby arsehole is standing for councillor in my local village, the bastard!
Every year I have lived here he seems to be involved in some kind of media kerfuffle, usually inept attempts at building his profile, iirc.

What the hell he is doing standing for Mayor of Liverpool I have no idea.

I went to a debate about this last week in the Epstein Theatre on Hanover Street. 6 of the candidates were there. One of them who wasn't invited, Jeff Berman, was sitting right in front of us and had to be dragged out for shouting at Joe Anderson. He seemed like a bit of a weirdo, he was filming with a little handheld camera and mouthing off under his breath all the time. I think getting thrown out was probably what he was going for just to get some attention.

It's a two vote system so I'm going for John Coyne and Steve Radford.  I'm not giving my vote to the main parties because I'm hoping for some genuine change and not just a lot of politi-waffle.

He always stands in our ward at all the elections and drives around in an old fashioned campaign car with posters and loudhailers and shit.

Definitely a few votes short of keeping his deposit in my book.

I think I'm going to go with Liam Fogarty and Steve Radford, not sure in what order yet.

Exactly my thinking so I've ended up going for Fogarty and Coyne.

One of the criticisms that's been levelled at the Elected Mayor job is that it's not very accountable and will pretty much sideline councillors on the major decision making.  The irony for Joe Anderson is that, if he loses this election, he'll have essentially castrated the ruling Labour council by handing over all the power to whichever candidate wins.

Tony Mulhearn.

Decent fella, seems a good sort. Speak to him in Huyton gym on weekend mornings. I agree with his politics as well.

Looks like Joe is going to spend most of tomorrow outlining his vision of Liverpool's new constitution for delegation and governance arrangements.
Unusual times ahead me wonders.

As far as I know, a salary hasn't been set for Liverpool Mayor yet. I could be wrong but I think Joe was on or above £40k as a full time leader.

Disappointing turnout - just 31% - but probably expected.

Thought it would have been higher for such an important vote.

Now it's time for Joe to start delivering on his promises which were pretty bold as far as I'm concerned.

Shame.  Honestly expected a more dramatic result.  This has been little more than a coronation. Will just have to see how things work out.  :-\

English Democrats sorry.

I don't know massive amounts about them as they recieve very little exposure, but don't the English democrats push for an English assembly? Why would that cause the same level of tension as a National Front candidate?

Considering a lot of the major cities rejected the idea of  a mayor then if Joe Anderson plays it right politically then Liverpool could do really well out of it . The government want the idea of mayors to work so if it's made to look like you prosper more and get a better deal by having one , then it would be in the governments Interest to accommodate Liverpool more than other cities in grants and rebates and government department relocations . A political risk but Joe anderson has been described today as the most powerful politician in england outside London .he needs to use that power
