Hope Rafa manages them.
Football without fans is nothing.

We've won 18 titles, 5 European Cups, 7 FA Cups, but today must be the greatest victory of all.

Top article, Louise Taylor's quality. The female sports writers on that paper (her and Hyde mainly) rip the piss out of most of the men, bar David Conn. Anyway, the bit about his win rate being worse at Sunderland was very interesting, given the vastly improved resources he had to work with.

Definitely. One thing that was touched on in her piece was Bruce's ineptitude in terms of analysis and recruitment. If one gets beyond the notion that Bruce seems to be a Luddite in some respects with regard to ProZone and other things, the area I'm surprised that isn't highlighted more is his dealings in the transfer market. Although Redknapp is often (rightly) critiqued for his role in the market, Bruce's transfers aren't. When he was signing the likes of Palacios at Wigan, people were commenting about how great his scouting network is. But is it really?

If Taylor's article is to taken at face value, Bruce appears to not be using new technologies to improve training or researching targets, nor does he have a genuine footballing philosophy. Yet, the manner in which he signs and casts players off makes one wonder to what extent his scattergun approach is influenced by agents or other figures in the game. He's signed a few really good players at Sunderland like Larsson, Bent and Cana, but the latter pair didn't last too long. He's also spent a lot of money on very average young players like Campbell and Cattermole. This summer he loaded up the wage bill with many players who are going to be an absolute burden on the next manager. Giving O'Shea and Brown, two players in their thirties with a history of injury troubles contracts to 2015 was madness. Additionally, the level of player turnover he has had at every club is astounding. At Sunderland alone, Bent, Cana, Gyan and Paulo da Silva all lasted less than a year and a half under Bruce. And there's countless examples of that happening at other clubs in which he signs players for a decent fee, only to cut them loose after 12 months: Luciano Figueroa, Marlon King, Rowan Vine, Aliou Cisse, Robbie Blake etc.

Actually thought Kean would get the boot first. Rafa is too good for Sunderland, who the hell wants to manage Sunderland? MoN probably.

I would imagine good shouts for MoN or Mark Hughes. Question is would McClaren sneak it?

Hughes isn't as bad as the rest. O'Neill is miles better than fathead but is still a pale, spekky, zebedee shadow compared to rafa. The job really is beneath him and they won't want him - the visionless fuckers will get what they want and deserve - the blind leading the blind

Couple of threads on the Sunderland forum about Rafa:

A few of them recognize what a huge coup it would be for Sunderland if they were able to get him, but unsurprisingly most of them are complete bellends.

One comment in particular caught my eye:

Bruce like others is best seen as an idiot "rent a quote" for Sky sports news.

While good managers have better things to do these clowns seem to have
the ability to talk shite about everything.

Why the fuck does anyone here think so lowly of Rafa as to say he should put himself through managing a shithouse club like that? Honestly. The English press has completely poisoned all opposition fans here against him. I know he wants a project in the Premier League, but for me, I'd rather see him never manage here again until we need a manager. There's not a single club in England other than here that he'd be welcomed with open arms. Especially Sunderland.

They're shithouse fans. Rafa's a very rich man, he doesn't need to be putting himself through that shit. And he still has a big reputation on the continent where people can see that he took the Inter job at the wrong time and just how canny Mourinho is for getting out of there when he did. I'd love to see him back managing in Spain or Italy, or even France or Germany. But I never want to see him manage a club in England if it's not us.

I think it's a good job for him. The owner seems patient and there might be money available. The fans, generally might not be so warm though. Still, if he wants a job in England, it's unlikely there'll be one coming up soon that's better than this and that includes Chelsea.

Why oh why?  So one poor result can see him be bashed in every media outlet?  He is in a no win situation as he isn't going to win the league or get into Europe with them, no one is, it will end up in him leaving or being sacked and his reputation will be in even more tatters.

Plus the stupid moronic fans will never give him time as for some reason they think he is a poor manager.

Jesus!

I hope they're happy with the middle of the road British manager they inevitably get.

Why would you pick Mark Hughes or Martin O'Neill, managers who have barely won a trophy between them ahead of European cup and La Liga winner? How boring it must be to support a club that thinks that way.

It certainly did not play well with Sunderland fans when the crowd were blamed for harbouring overly "great expectations" or that Bruce constantly bemoaned the difficulty of attracting players to the north-east. More recently, his loudest lament has been that locals would not accept him purely because he had been born north of the Tyne and grew up supporting Newcastle United.

That sounds suspiciously Hodgson-esque in its blame deflection.

On the Rafa issue, I think it is fair to say that the British media, combined with Purslow and that stint at Inter, have pretty much destroyed his managerial reputation in this country.  If any PL club other than Liverpool were to take him on their fans would literally riot - that's how convinced they are that he is shit.

That's a grotesque disservice to a marvellous man but frankly I would say those clubs and their fans don't deserve a man like Rafa to be in charge of their club.  I think we all have that sneaking hope/suspicion he wants to come back to us when Kenny decides to head back to the golf course.  :)

Get a grip. As the exact same table shows, they had the second best attack and the best defence, one goal behind Real Madrid who had the pichichi, fat Ronaldo on fucking fire banging in 24 of their goals.

Benitez may not have flourished at Liverpool but that's not to say he wouldn't bring a wholly different approach to a team like Sunderland. He will never come but to argue against him in such a pathetic manner is fucking moronic to be honest like. Hodgson failed at Liverpool but he did a remarkable job at Fulham, he'd have done better than Bruce did with us. Imagine how far Benitez could potentially go with Sunderland.

Exactly, if I were Rafa I wouldn't take a job in the Premier League.  I know he wants to, but personally think it would be the wrong move.

He doesn't have the reputation his talent warrants in this league.  It would make it difficult for him and as you say he'd end up harming his reputation.

These middle range Premier League managers have an easy life, don't they?

Earn good wages, get sacked, pick up compensation and wait around for six months to do it again.  You could probably put a monkey in charge and you'd get similar results.

Might get a bit of that myself.

Spot on. There are a whole host of Premier League managers who've never won anything, never achieved anything and never played good football but because they had a decent playing career and are approved of by Martin Tyler and his monkey they still get job after job after job.

In no other industry except possibly banking is failure so richly rewarded.

There are a lot of idiots on that forum who think that Rafa is shit, althought let's face it, it's not just Sunderland fans who feel that way. No point going over it again. Just to add some balance, I had this email from a Mackem mate on Monday so before Bruce was sacked. He's a fan of Rafa but doesn't think he'd want the job. He seems to favour O'Neill from 'the usual suspects' but given that he hasn't favoured him ahead of Rafa that's fair enough:

"Did you see the manner in which we conceded losing goal to Wigan? Shambolic.  Fathead has only picked up 1 point form a winable 6, if it wasn't for the north west trio doing spectularly poorly, we could feasibly be bottom.  As it stands we're definately going to be in a relegation battle.  Who do we get to replace him?  Rafa - unfortunately think he's just too big for us.  Having last worked with talents at Inter, lets face it working with a large group of players deemed surplus at united coupled with thug of a captain, is going to be quite the come down.  M O'neill is out of work, like to see him at  least approached, but again feel he'd turn us down.  Think with relative money we have to spend could try tapping up Moyes, but I've heard he's been ear marked to succed at Tottenham should Harry take the England job.  That or we take a punt on young manager and see, but I don't know many young mangers out there and that step, historically, into premier always seems quite a big transition.  So long as we don't go for Fat Sam..."

Rafa would quite happily take the job I believe but the idiotic bunch of drooling inbreds will have convinced the Sunderland board not to go for him. Which suits me down to the ground. Rafa backed by Sunderland's considerable resources could make them into a CL contender. As it stands they'll probably hire Hughes, everyone's happy and they'll be doomed to more years of mediocrity. Serves them right.

Rafa is a world class manager;
But considering he has stated, he isn't intrested in stature or finance,  he wants a project in the PL, it is a possibility.
I got the Lucas thing wrong. Will be right on Henderson though. Play him RM, play him CM - Not good enough and never will be.
