Fair enough!

Quote
A football writer who lost a bet about the future of Newcastle United's manager has swum across the River Tyne to honour his side of the pledge.

Henry Winter said he did not believe that Alan Pardew would receive a long-term commitment when he was appointed boss of the Magpies two years ago.

Following the announcement of an eight-year contract, the Daily Telegraph writer took to the chilly waters.

He also used his swim to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Tony Greener, an experienced swimmer and organiser of the annual Tyne 10 Mile River Swim, accompanied him.

The pair, wearing wetsuits, set off from a pontoon at the base of the Tyne Bridge. It took them about five minutes to reach HMS Calliope on the Gateshead bank.
'Dragged along'

Mr Winter said: "The first two-thirds were a doddle and I thought 'This is OK, a nice gentle paddle across the Tyne'.

"But then suddenly the current hit and it was like the fast lane of the motorway.

“Start Quote

Suddenly the current hit and it was like the fast lane of the motorway”

End Quote Henry Winter

"I could actually feel myself being dragged along and I was fortunate to have an experienced swimmer alongside me in Tony Greener.

"In fact, at one point I think I grabbed Tony's toe."

Referring to the late Sir Bobby Robson, who set up the cancer charity bearing his name prior to his death in 2009, Mr Winter said: "He was simply one of the greatest managers this country has produced and a great man."

On arrival, Mr Winter was wrapped in a Newcastle United FC towel and handed a note from Pardew.

The message read: "Henry, you're a man of your word and congratulations.

"I can't imagine how cold it was in the Tyne today but rest assured we'll give you a warm welcome when you arrive at the stadium later.

"What's more, well done for raising money to support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. It's a superb charity that's close to all our hearts here at Newcastle United."

Mr Winter said: "I thought it was a class act of Alan Pardew to send me a congratulatory note and a club towel.

"He was obviously confident I'd make it because he sent it to the Gateshead side of the river."

After agreeing a new deal with Wonga.com, Alan Pardew must now demand that his team give 1356%.

:thumbup Absolute gift for comedians, amateur or professional this.

Next time they get hammered at home, expect Pardew to be dressed up like Gene Wilder in a tabloid:

Watched them yesterday against United and they were totally outplayed, yet when we played United we bossed it,if we had a Ba or a Cisse in our team we would finish way ahead of them as I honestly wouldn't have any of their other players apart from Ben Arfa in our starting 11.

Newcastle were never going to win yesterday with a second string defence against Man Utd. Had Krul, Simpson, Steve Taylor and Colo been playing, I think the game would have been a bit closer.
Williamson would be lucky to get a regular place in a Championship starting 11, Perch is OK as a sub for limited use, young Fergujson is a better left winger than left back and Harper has slowed down big time.
All the TV pundits were saying how good "United" were (that boils my piss as well, Newcastle were United when those coonts were Newton Heath) but nobody mentioned that it wasn't exactly that hard against a totally makeshift defence.
I blame fatty for not reinforcing the defence strength of the squad when the ideal opportunity was there in summer. Instead of building on his investment, he was too busy strengthening the stitching in his pockets and his wallets to keep his money in, the fat greedy git.

If you could guarentee me Ba wasnt going to sign for us then get crocked with his dodgy knee in his first game, id take Ba over him personally. He scores goals. Very good finisher. Id play them both upfront together though.

Id take Kruhl as well, good keeper that lad and Reina needs a fucking rocket up his arse lately.

Great PR move. Everyone will talk about that and how Wonga are great for listening to the fans' concerns, rather than the fact that Newcastle have taken the shilling from some legal loan sharks.

It'll also generate some more media coverage for Sports Direct. Every article that mentions this will, of course, include a reference to the stadium formerly being called the Sports Direct Arena.

Just shows there is no ethics when in comes to football.

they massively overachieved last season, mainly due to 2 strikers who were on fire at different halves of the season. their defence apart from collocini is beyond average. i rate cabaye but he's been played out of position this season.

Having been at the Newcastle v West Ham game last week & they loose another home game they would be expected to win I think there bubble has truly burst.

A good team but massively over performed last year with Cisse scoring countless amazing goals , the Geordies I spoke said Cisse has been shit & still keeps trying for the wonder goals when a tap in is required, Cabaye most said has been shit.

Last week we beat them by doing the basics better. We passed better , moved better , closed down quicker, won second ball more often, won 90% of headers & just wanted it more.

Admittedly they missed Coloccini & Tiote

Mid table team in reality I think 8th or 9th this season

Thats what happens when you don't invest properly in your team after a strong season. They lack depth - when Cabaye or Coloccini are out, the replacements aren't of the expected class to come in and do the job properly.

Their form is surprising looking at last season, but not when you look at the teamsheet. Only one stand out performer for me in Ba, and too many players who turn it on when it suits ie Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Gutierrez. Cisse has been in shocking form and their defence aside from Krul who is quality is rubbish.
Fuck it, I'm taking me dog for a walk. The pair of us are completely bollocksed and take turns a piece dragging one another along. We look a bit like one of Roy's midfield pairings, but with a wee bit more guile and panache. Well, on the dog's side, anyway
