The second half was dominated by percentage football, with balls being played into channels and the obligatory long ball to Carroll. The pass and move disappeared and the ball too feet was negligable as well.Worrying, was also the fact that we don`t have any decent ball winners in our new look midfield.
A lot of hard work ahead, and I`d like to see Kelly at RB if Johnson is out for longer.

*sigh*

Same old it seems. Heads drop and we go to shit as soon as it starts going against us.

Henderson was especially poor, the lad has zero defensive awareness, just wanders about the place watching the ball the whole time.

Really disappointed.

Would have been nice if that team who played in the 1st half turned up for the second...

This match certainly lived up to my fears.

Henderson, Downing, Adam, looking very average. Carragher looking like the relic he is, Kenny's tactics and choice of players, all poor. Hoof after hoof in the second half, no composure or brains. Also much to reliant on Suarez.

And Dowd is a fat fuck who lost us the game, how ever poor we were. Hope Kenny lays into him.

On the other hand, I thought Enrique was boss in defence, but he didn't get too involved in offence too much..

Pretty good first half.

We were abysmal in the second half

Complete lack of creativity in the second half and a complete lack of pressing. To blame it all on Flannigan is unfair. Downing and Adam offered nothing in a second half where Suarez was clearly tiring and Carroll was contending a growing number of punts where he was mildly successful much like his all round game today. Henderson offered little all game.

Make no mistake, a poor start to the season with a trip to Highbury up next.

It would be one thing if Flanagan had to start, as was the case at times last season, but the fact that he played so poorly while Kelly was on the bench makes little sense.
So why aren't you blaming Kenny then eh? Stop hiding behind having a go at a very young lad who had a tough game and say what you mean.

That game shoud have been over in the first half.

Dissappointed.

Fanno should his naivety and had a bit of a stinker in the second half.

Charie Adam looked like Alonso in the first half. He looked like Biscan at his worst in the second.

Our defensive frailty is concerning. Thought Enrique looked strong considering he hasn't been here a wet week.

I'm realy disappointed with our fitness levels. Sunderland looked stronger and fitter in the second half with is a worry.

Our play in the second half was laboured and disjointed resulting in lots of lumps to Carroll.

That's a quite good summary of the match.

I don't think he can be scapegoated but he was poor today Pheeny. He was at fault for the equaliser because of his positioning.

After that, his confidence was shoot and he just got progressively worse as the game went on.

Hope it doesn't have any long term confidence issue for the lad because he looked bright in the first half

Or Suarez scores the pen, its not a problem.

We can blame the ref all day long but we're going to have to win games 11 v 11. And if we have any ambition this season we're going to have to beat teams who are much better than Sunderland.

Calm down lads, its the first game of the season ffs. We ran out of puff in the second half but the first half showed what we have to look forward to this season.

There clearly is a lot of work to be done. Although we gave them a helping hand in  the second half, Sunderland were surprisingly better than I thought.

Flanno poor. Should noy have been picked. Was suprised to see Henderson in team.  Dirk did more in the short time he was on than Henderson.

Lucas strangely had a poor game too.

Positeves - Adam, Downing

Carroll better on the deck than I thought

And why did we start with Henderson? I know it was his ex club, but boy Kuyt is Hollands international and 5 times better player than Hendo is now. Sorry, but I just feel so frustrated!

Flanagan lost it in the second half. Lucas and Adam became increasingly sloppy on the ball after starting so well, and Suarez tired. We were poor in that second half, Sunderland controlled it.

Thought Downing was good throughout. We have the components top side and still have Gerrard to come back in. Could have been worse but I really expected us to win it comfortable after that first half.

Clearly need time to gel as a team.

I really dont understand where "pass and move" under kenny comes from in the games where we played Carroll. Only in the Man City game have I seen liverpool play good passing football without hoofing it up to him. We really cant expect to win games when we play so one dimensionally.

Really missed Aquaman in games like these...he has the composure and vision to make things happen in the final third...more so than Adam in my opinion.

Regarding the new signings, I thought Enrique looked great considering he's only been here a matter of hours. Very composed.
Adam looked pretty decent, though his stamina may need some work.
Downing was good, and will always give you a 7 or 8 out of ten.
I still haven't quite figured out what it is Henderson is supposed to actually do.
Carroll was a threat, and will be better as the team adapts to his game.

Because he had a very poor game, cost us 3 points, and there's no logic to him starting and Kelly being on the bench?

Seems to be plenty of reason to me.
The cross should never have been allowed to be put in in the first place. 3 players sucked in to Gyan and left it wide open for the cross which led to their goal

  • We've got our valuation and we're sticking to it
First real tough time Flanno has had of it. Think Kelly should probably have played ahead of him, but fuck it, the lad is a talent, and was his usual self first half. Hopefully he doesn't get too down and he's back to normal come his next game.

Thought we were really good in the main. Well looking forward to this season. Give it two or three weeks when we've got a bit of match sharpness and we'll be up there.

All the newbies did quite well. Enrique was a rolls royce defensively.

So I see we've got a new scapegoat in Flannagan then have we.

Hardly scapegoating, no one is saying it's solely Flanno's fault we've come away with only a point but he made a glaringly obvious mistake for the equaliser & just generally had a terrible 2nd half. If anyone else had played like he did today they'd of had the floor wiped with them & rightly so.

We drew the game because we didn't take advantage of our dominance in the first half, simple as that really. We had the chances to win that game by 4, easily.

that was like watching arsenal. murdered them 1-0 first half, stupid defensive error drops points and it wont get easier next week. How did larsson score that goal though? All the times he could have done that in training and he comes of with it now

First of all lets give Sunderland some credit for closing us down well in the second half, their goal was well taken but a massive error leaving him in that much space, Flanagan will get hung out to dry on that but he is a young lad he will make mistakes so we either accept that or we kick him back into the reserves!
I can only think Kelly wasnt well or something as he didnt get the nod, first half most things working well, second half nothing working well, was it lack of fitness ?

It is the first game this can happen!

In the end we should not look for too many scapegoats (although many will) we should put this behind us and move onto the next game!

Couldn't be more fucked off right now if I tried. I want to smash the fucking world to bits. Two points dropped already.

Absolute shithouse performance second half, and highlights the need for another very good striker or forward. Completely and utterly out of ideas with just Carroll up there.

And I'm sorry, but Flanagan was rubbish, and starting him over Kelly was a daft choice.

I am very disappointed.

Apologize to HeIsBigAndRed. He told me that there were no signs for pass and move and I couldnīt believe it. We are looking more than Tottenham now than anything else, just without the class.

Without Suarez and Lucas, who both couldnīt even walk anymore in the second half as they both had no holiday and no preseason, there is really not much to see other than kick and rush. We couldnīt replace them but that was clear before the game.

On our new signings I feel not much has changed so far to convince me that Adam and Carroll are anything else than average players. Downing needs to play the ball on the ground, he and Henderson will be alright though, I think they did ok.

I couldnīt really figure out what Adam was doing other than hitting the long ball and crossing. The invisible man with very little work in defense and proper movement or passing.

But I forgot, itīs not about pass and move anymore... obviously.

I am very dissapointed. It was Sunderland at home.
One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

No one to blame but us. Dowd maybe a twat, and he may have sent off Richardson, but we had so many chances to kill this game.

The way we started 2nd half was inexcusable, after our first half performance. Livid.

My god, now nobody's allowed to have a pop at Flanagan either.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.
