Excellent video that because it captures something important about Lucas. It's the pure efficiency of his tackling. Some of those guys didn't even know they were about to be challenged let alone tackled. He often seems to know what a player is going to do before they've thought of it themselves. And when he commits he commits.
It's unreal the amount of times the ball ends up at a Liverpool players feet once he makes the tackle. Its the same with his heading. Watch him make a bone jarring tackle, judge were the ball is going as he recovers and moves to receive the ball if needed. Also looking at that video the myth that the chap has no pace is gone. He moves like a panther, always ahead of the game.
Why are you looking past this season?

Class vid from ElAlonso. It's new.  :wave

That is an excellent video. Think the key to his great tackling is his much underestimated technical ability. Very rarely does the ball travel that far away from his boot when he tackles or intercepts, thereby giving him a chance to bring the ball clear or find another team mate with his next touch.

Great vid - ElAlonso does it again.

Love the way Lucas glides across the pitch - brave as a lion too.

Anyone who criticises his lack of steel in tackling (translation: he doesn't slide if he can help it) should watch his Fulham compilation. Watch the Fulham players slide around all over the place, ending up on their arse several yards from where Lucas has dragged the ball to, or taking out Lucas and earn a card in the process. I've argued this with people who couldn't understand why it's a virtue to tackle standing up, and that game, with Lucas as the playmaker and the Fulham players specifically targeting him, was as good a demonstration of the argument as any. And to press home this point, there were also several instances of a Fulham player taking the ball on, to find it's suddenly gone and they didn't know where, and there was Lucas, already into his stride with the ball and ready to start another attack.

He fucking hammers the other player, full tilt. And comes away with the ball.

I feel that Lucas sometimes gets over analysed.

It gets boring after a while (Maybe it's just me).

Absolutely, I also appreciate it when he gets away with taking the ball but with a bit of the man. Modern football is so disappointing when you take a ball clean off someones feet even if you clatter the knees slightly and a ref blows. Football has to be about going in solid without intent to injure and Lucas does it brilliantly.

Very Alonso and Hamann esque in the way he 'robs' the ball rather than slides in (although he does that very well too).

He's such a class player these days.

Made this picture quickly in regard to this post (borrowed someone else Lucas silhouette and just edited my own stuff to it - used google translate so not sure if the bottom words are correct). Thought it was pretty apt. People barely notice him but he's so deadly and effective. :-)

Maybe, though not moreso than a fair few other players - witness the current teams of text about Carroll, or Adam; the analysis of Henderson & Downing. There was a mountainous thread on Aquilani and he hardly actually played for us!

Does that mean those fantasy teams people post with Lucas all across the midfield could become reality?

There really needs to be a way of suing that rag for lifting quotes the way they do.
They've done it for years with foriegn players in their foriegn language interviews and it is just false.
I got the Lucas thing wrong. Will be right on Henderson though. Play him RM, play him CM - Not good enough and never will be.

Hope it's just you. I think he's under analysed personally, and damned with faint praise mostly.

Hmm, think it's at the point that he's getting fair coverage, at least on here.

He's not the first player to be very good at anticipating, positioning and making good decisions on a pitch. Yet the fight, both for him on the pitch and for those supporting him at the game / on here was such a long one, that there seems to be a tendency to keep banging on about his quality.

Personally, it's obvious what he's very good at (and while he improved in those areas, even in his first season he was decent at them, else he wouldn't have got Rafa's trust to play as part of a deeper two) and the few areas he can improve a bit, finishing the few opportunities he gets (which is how it should be, there's a problem if your dm is making too many forward runs) being the main one.

Know he'll do his bit, the issue is now his partner and the player ahead of those two. We need a clear idea there, not get them spot on one game and screw it up the next.
