How many?
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:08:17 pm »
Watching some old footage of games with the likes of Emlyn Hughes and it got me thinking, we quite often talk about players from the old days who would make it in modern football, but what about the other way round?

Which modern players would be able to play in the days of Hughes, Yeats and co?

Not many, I'm sure of that.

I reckon Jockey was 20 years ahead of his time, Carras 20 behind the times.
Carras no nonsense approach is made for 70's football.
13mins - Bournemouth have gone home. Utd kicked off anyway. Still 0-0 as Smalling passes it back to De Gea.

I'd pay good money to see Berbatov against Tommy Smith under the old rules. He'd find out what "contact" really means.

I was watching the 92/93 opener against QPR and some of the football was unreal. Challenges were hard hitting and springs to mind are:

Gerrard
Kuyt

I think people would be surprised. A lot of the diving and players appearing weak is because they think that works better for them=. If you didnt have that atmosphere around I reckon a lot of players would actually be a lot tougher than they seem.

The game has completely changed. If you transported players from the 70's and 80's and dropped them into a premiership game they would be completely fucked after 20 minutes and sent off soon after.

Yup. If refs didn't give out cards based on how injured a tackled player looks, there wouldn't be half of the play-acting that goes on now.

Don't want to inflict painful nostalgia on anyone, but I reckon Alonso would have fucking owned any midfield from back then.

you couldnt possibly imagine any current world class player in a game against a team of 50's/60's/70's legends at the peak of their abilities when the game was a contact sport!
it could go only two ways...

1. They would be cut to ribbons as soon as they touched the ball

2. They would collapse on the pitch after 20 minutes of proper football

Modern teams would overwhelm the older ones because they are much fitter. But there is a misconception that the olden days was just a kicking contest: the game was enhanced by skillful alcoholics, gamblers and fanny-merchants who would never get away with it now: Best, Bowles and Worthington to name but three. We were more profesional but some of ours had their moments.

It's always hard comparing athletes from different eras. I'd agree the players were much tougher back then, the finesse players of today wouldn't be able to cope if they game was still played with the same amount of contact. On the other side of coin, the level of conditioning and sheer pace of the game today would have lots of the players from the 70s totally gassed before halftime.

It's apples and oranges...

Wouldn't he just, remember that player he stuck in the Paddock, think it was against FC Zurich in the European Cup in '77, if that would've been Berbaflop he would've landed in Sleepers Hill ;D

Pretty much all of them. The fitness and athleticism of modern player is far greater than 40 years ago. And the likes of Heighway, St John, Stan Mathews, Bowles, Marsh, that Irish feller who played for the Mancs etc were no less skilful.

True mate, especially the skill factor when you consider the cow fields that they used to play on. Modern pitches are like carpets in comparison.

What does annoy me is how modern footballers complain about fatigue so much and managers resting players. Granted, I know that it's a much quicker game nowadays and players need to run further and faster, but consider that we used to play 42 league games a season without the cup competitions. I think we had a season where we used only 15 players. Aston Villa only used 14 players when they won the league in 1981 IIRC.

Players like Ronaldo and Messi would get kicked to pieces, but they'd soon adapt and then start to dominate.  Defenders from back in the day just wouldn't be able to cope with the speed and skills of today's top players.

He probably does, but not the temperament. He's no John Fashanu is he.

Oh to timewarp Drogba back to the early 80s, to see the crowd in collective laughter as he rolls about the pitch after actually being mamed by a Graham Roberts or a Terry Butcher.

In fact, fuck it, lets timewarp the Chelsea 2010 back to 1974 to play against the dirty cheating low life bastards that were Leeds United. Every single one of them in that team was a dirty fucker, but it would be class watching them do what they were best at against Chelsea 2010.
