seemed to be fine against di maria last year, he needs a higher line played, we wont get that till skrtel and agger both start as cb's

Yup di maria cause insua problems but johnson dealt with him. Di maria is one of the best wingers around too, dont remember him doing to bad against valencia either when we beat them at anfield even at old trafford crosses came from the left.

Been solid defensively as well- cut out a few passes, great header away on the back post in the first half.

Seems Roy has played a blinder with the bit of criticism aimed at GloJo.

He's upped his game.

I think it's more to do with how he was used today. A lot more attacking, coupled with the fact that West Ham offered very little threat and that Kuyt/Maxi was ahead of him and often came inside, freeing up space for him.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Nonsense.

Johnson's defensive responsibilities today were nil, hence he could afford to get forward with no worries about counter-attacks.

No he hasn't. He's the same Glen Johnson; our best attacker down the right side, capable of skill, pass and move football, linking up with the attackers and scoring a goal.

Only difference is, he was allowed to concentrate on attacking which is what all other top teams allow their attacking RBs to do. If players like Alves and Maicon were forced to defend as much as Johnson they'd look *far* worse than he does.

Watch him when he goes to an attacking team or if we turn into one; he'll easily be one of the most celebrated defenders in Europe.

Lol yeah Roy has pulled managerial masterclass which has lead to us beating West Ham 3-0.  Nothing at all to do with West Ham employing tactics that made even Roy look like a tactical god

I understand the sarcasm, but if it were Mr. Ferguson giving one of his players something to think about- via the media, and was rewarded by a performance like Johnson`s today, would he be heralded or laughed at?

Johnson has the ability own that right flank from right back the way alves and maicon/ramos do like he did today. The pass he played to torres was almost of the highest quality.

May not be exactly those words or exactly in that order, but the gist was deffo what he said....

... and you can tell there was trouble cos Hodgson, interviewed after, did the usual backtracking using phrases like 'storm in a teacup', 'some people like to make trouble', 'it was a casual conversation which people have picked up on..'

I know who I believe.... and yes, Keegan was spot on about a manager criticising players in the Press - 'Unless he's trying to sell the player, I don't see the point in it...'

Much better today, though he wasn't really pressured in the first half. I was disapointed he eased up in the second as he was our main threat and we lost a bit of momentum. Close to MOTM for me.

Against teams like this he plays like that. Against teams like that he plays like <insert a cuss word>. Then thats not his fault, he just does not fit into the system which hodgson has, a old fashioned back four.  He looks almost as bad as Konchesky when defending deep. Today he played really well. Hopefully we will not sell him before a new manager can check him out.

I was disappointed that the whole team eased off - we dropped back and gave them way too much time and space on the ball.

It's nice when Johnson remembers to attack. Not only does it give us at least one good option in attack (movement) but he's actually really good at it, isn't he? His balance and strength are outstanding and I hope this game provides the catalyst for him to push on.

 Good man, Glen.

Only natural really. I still felt we were in complete control and should really have had a few more. Johnson, though, seemed more hestitant in the second half up and we lost a bit of attacking verve down the right.

As a defender, he is brainless.  Just does not understand the this part of the game, too many times getting caught out wrong side etc.  As a midfileder, not bad at all.  Keep him, but play him in midfiled!!

Indeed. When you talk about Glen having a good game it's always about his attacking strengths. Don't see the harm in at least trying, we did it with the likes of Riise, Dossena and Aurelio.

As a defender, he has weak points but he is good at defending when pressing the ball, especially high up in midfield. He can make a tackle up there or, if up high enough can often make a decent recovery with his pace and get back for a challenge to win the ball back. When asked to stand off the ball until its 20 yards away from our goal, he doesn't make the best decisions and his positions are often wrong. We need to play to his natural attributes - his pace and ability on the ball, he is very strong with the ball and if he has space to recover when dispossesed, he is effective at winning the ball back. Its, again, a matter of tactics designed to basically allow Carragher and Skrtel (two players with ZERO pace) the ability to play positionally because they have no hope in hell of winning the ball back if we lose it above the halfway line.

Glen johnsons problem today was that Roy is employing a one full back at a time system. In at at least 7 instances in the game he had the whole wing to himself but the konch had gone walkies. Meaning he stopped his run and missed hug opportunities. What roy needs to realise is he should release glen and not the konch, would be so nuch more effective. Everyone can see what he can do around the box

Imagine if Aquilani and the idiotic section of the support get their wish, and Juventus make him another cut price signing. Out of the top attacking full backs, he's possibly the best defender (the others are worse), and not much worse as an attacker. At the price some are willing to let him go for, and with the manager intent on driving him out, he could be one of the bargains of the next one or two windows. The bargain of the next summer window will be, of course, Aquilani.

What did he say?

Basically said you can use the media in different ways.
If you want to get rid of a player you can use it, to try to give a player a kick up the arse etc.
Keegan said he didn't agree with using the media to berate a player and in my eyes he's right as it's a fine line between kicking up the arse and pushing out the door.
